Today i jumped on to a corp mate of mine saying he's scaned a mining op in an 0.4 system, and would like help. So i get on my Caracal, one jump away, and enter system. He warps in, i follow soon after to find myself a nice mess. 1 Covetor, 1 Thorax, and i can't remember the name, but the smallest mining barge. So, i lock and fire on the one month thorax going for the kill. 10 or more drones flying around, almost all light scouts. I put him to hull from almost full shield while only losing about half my shields. First kill, and pod for a couple month old player.
Question being, would it have been a better bet to prevent the covetor from warping out and let the thorax go? The stips on the barge probably would have got me more ISK, and the thorax probably would have stayed behind to try and help out his corp mate.
Then, a Ferox jumped into system and was looking through the wreckage... should i have tried for him on a 1 week old character? I was sitting out at 55km with 4 heavies... and starting to kick myself for not trying.
That being said, YARRR!! Here i come.

Hi, I think on the first part of your post that you should have kept the barges there, while killing the thorax. You had 2 ships, vs 1 thorax and barges. Once the thorax was gone the barges would have gone very fast. If the thorax wanted to run, than the barges would have gone very fast. So either way you would have gotten the barges.
Now for the ferox vs caracal part, the 1v1 places the odds on that guys, if you were 2 than you might have had a better chance, so being alone and lacking in skills, you made a good choice.

That's what i was thinking, but for the thorax, my corp mate was well into hull on a frig when i came in so i locked the thorax, as instructed to do(corp leader). I let go one volley of missles and the smaller barge warped, i actually ran into the covetor preventing it from warping out, and almost switched over to it, but thought i didn't want to take the scrammer off the thorax to end up losing both ships.
Good, glad i did the right thing with the Ferox... i thought about letting 1-2 sets of rockets go to see what i can do, and if things didn't look good i'd just warp away.
Also want to thank anyone who's ever warped to gate after an encounter. I learned and planet jumped with both corp mates in system not knowing if someone had something docked in station.

Deffinitely should have warp scrambled the Covetor and pummeled the Thorax.
Because a.) If the Thorax pilot had even a half-decent setup, he would have had a MWD and med blasters fitted and you would have been dead anyways, and b.) If the Thorax pilot *didn't* have the above setup he would have had sucky lewt anyways.
And you did the right thing by not engaging the Ferox. Whether he had rails or heavy missiles, you would have been shredded. (Ferox has a better tank and more firepower than the Caracal, not to mention more drone capacity.)

1. Drones aren't going to go 55km from a ferox pilot 2. Caracal has a damage bonus. Ferox has 1 more launcher, but no missile damage bonus. Depending on your cruiser skills, caracal can do more damage than a ferox.
Always worth giving a try, especially if your friend was in the area.

Always blow up the barge.
When crashing a mining op (with a crap guard no less) you want to do as much damage as possible and popping the barge is the way to do it.
I've only killed one barge so far (F*ck you local) but I know it gets peoples blood boiling Best Dressed Corp of 2006 and 2007! -ISD Marcus Thinks Eve who knew!? |

Edited by: Sun Win on 18/01/2007 03:29:39 Lock both ships. Scram the barge and then shoot at the Thorax.
For the Ferox here's the calculation: Can I afford to replace the ship I am in? If you can, then at this stage of the game I suggest going for literally everything you see except maybe t2 ships and obvious large gangs of targets. The only way to learn to fight is to fight.

Edited by: Midori Sakura on 18/01/2007 09:53:56 Barges are primery then the security :P, just lock all you see scram 1 barge shoot down the other barges (they useally die to fast to be able to warp off anyways, keep that one barge scrammed, if you think you can take the security kill them and then take the last barge, otherwise just kill as many barges as you can and warp off :P
Oh and just fast swich with the scram, if you scram someone that is going to warp it will pull em out of it and they think they are scrammed longer so sometimes they stop trying ^^

Obviously you make a call when your sitting there firing and being fired at but looking at the general outline I would have warped in and scrambled the barge(s) while hitting the thorax. Barges go down a lot easier than a thorax and once the thorax was dead or gone you could have killed the barge in less than 10 missiles (I can take out a medium barge with 6 from my Cerb, which ofc is a HAC compared to a cruiser but the point stands).
You made a good call on the ferox I feel. At least with the thorax you had one obvious aggressor and 2-3 obvious targets to shoot (being the barge(S) and thorax). Its very easy to get carried away and think you can shoot everything and get away with it. You got a good thorax kill and you messed up their mining op so I would be thankful (not necessarily happy) with that and I would call it a day if I felt that there was more risk in engaging one lone Ferox compared to three ships at a belt.
Just my opinion.
This is all based on advice which was given to me by a pirate friend of mine and it has worked every time, involving BS's, BC's, cruisers etc.

I agree with the other posters that you should have kept the scrambler on the barge. A Thorax piloted by a relatively young character is very unlikely to drop items worth a few mil, like strip miners. And if that Thorax was defending the barges, chances are he would have stayed until he went pop to not look bad in the eyes of his friends.
Anyhow another strategy is to switch your disruptor from one ship to another. I was able to pull down two ships this way with one disruptor. Lock both of them and then scramble one so that he gets the message on his screen. Then turn the scrambler off and scramble the other ship, one that you would hope to kill in the end, so he, too, gets the message on his screen. With luck, the other ship (or ships if there are more than 2) will think that it is also warp scrambled and stay and try to fight.

Hey Gravy,
Good to see you had fun then. You did a really good job. It's not easy to take out a thorax in a caracal. I just really wish I hadn't died. :((.
For the rest: I was the corp mate that found the mining op. We had some fun but I think it was a Retriever and a Procurer not a Covetor. Otherwise I would have told you to go for the covetor. ---------------------------

Yeah, i keep kicking myself for not scraming the cov, but i'll remember that in the future.
Lady signed off shortly after the kill of the thorax, and i was solo with no help within 4-5 jumps when the ferox entered system and i encountered. My guy was less then a week old and only lvl 3 cruiser trained up. 60k lock and fire range, but no way to scram him if he realized he was going down.
I've since run into the corp a few times, and have been giving them issues after a 250,000 isk bounty was put on my head. Nothing much, but nice getting that before your one week old. Now i like to break up mining ops of theres, and just have a lil fun.
Also, is there any way to see who exactly placed a bounty on your head? I'm not sure if it would be the guy in the thorax, or maybe their corp leader. Just wanted to know.
