Everytime I leave for a couple months, and I do that often, I come back to a whole boat load of changes. Warp to zero... so glad I spent over 100 million isk on bookmark trading... but my current (and yes, very small) concern is that the default zoom level you get when exiting a station is now the 'reset' zoom level after every stargate jump. If I mouse wheel my zoom out on ship a few steps, I want that to stay there. I can't believe this is an issue CCP still hasn't solved... or have they? Am I missing something after my last time away? How do I get the zoom level to stay where I put it?

Edited by: Captain Stern on 18/01/2007 12:29:54 Why do I always get the one person that can't say anything constructive responding to my posts? People like you are one of the reasons I don't bother much with the community here in the forums. I've been here since several weeks into the beta of this game and the camera issue has been around forever. If you don't have anything constructive to say about it, don't say anything... too many pylons in this game.
EDIT: The above was inspired by the Jim McGregor post.
And read my entire post before replying, I SAID I use the mouse wheel, but it returns to default zoom after every gate jump... sigh. I miss all my original friends from beta.

As I said above (and why), I don't bother with the forums much. And it is MY big problem, or I wouldn't have asked if there was a way around it that I've missed in the last couple months away again, but thanks anyway.
EDIT: Annoyed with all the whine? I haven't been in game or posted in this forum for months, now I'm instantly stereotyped with whiners... again why I stay out of the forums... ------------------------------------------------------ Remember, where ever you go, there you are! |

Totally agree, just keep the same zoom distance dammit, how can it be any use the way it is? Useless...
Keep the same zoom level, after jumping thru a gate, after docking and undocking, whatever, its not big deal, its the way it WAS, and it worked very well!

Its irritating little quirks like this that while fairly minor individually mount up to dispel the sense of immersion and just generally prove to be a pain. I really wish CCP would dedicate someone to work on the interface.
Interface "features" that immediately spring to mind: The camara reset whenever you change session/jump/dock etc.
The priority of the context sensitive right click menus. Why are the tasks which a player is going to commonly do e.g. gang stuff hidden away under a submenu while things like "transfer isk" are given pride of place in the main menu. You can tell CCP are all ebil pirates.
Its impossible to distinguish which particular module you have active on a target. Not a problem if you just unloading death and destruction upon one target, but try juggling nos, ecm, guns, drones (which have no target notification even!) across several targets, then play the guess the module game if you want to switch one module from one ship to another.
The overview is becomming increasinly cluttered. Not only is it used for displaying ships on your grid, but drones and now the fleet stuff. Please consider giving drones their own window.
Lack of any real sophistication to drone controls.
Interface cruft and wasted space. Thank you whomever got rid of those little graphic droppings that squatted on the top left of the chat windows obscuring the text, but there is still more wasted space which can be saved: take a look at the overview.
Lack of any real interface customization. You can move around chat windows, expand and alter the overview display, but thats it. While the central hud thingy is very pretty could I at least be able to place it where I want it? Id really like to be able to move it to the right a little to offer more room for chat windows. Perhaps even develop some different hud formats. Something much more minimal that took up a lot less screen real estate would be welcome.
Contracts: why is "simple view" hidden away at the bottom of a drop down menu that you dont even see by default? It really wants to be a radio button on the main menu or some such.
Contracts: Please make it explicit that a single item is that e.g. For a single unit of Trit, dont just have the Trit graphic, but as with stacks of items make the number explicit, that is Tritinum * 1
Please could we have some form of notification when scrambled etc.
Fleets are wonderful, but the biggest hurdle to their use is the time it takes to set one up. Rather than the current fiddly situation of having to right click and go through several submenus to move people around etc, fleet control is crying out for a graphical display. I want to be able to drag and drop people around a fleet in some sort of dynamic tree diagram.
Rigs: please add the current/total calibration points to the fitting window.
Fitting window: what happened to the feature where if you moused over an item in your cargo etc the relevant fitting stats would turn gold and show their values if the module was fitted.
Drones: please have the effect of drone skills etc actually effect the attributes displayed if you show info a drone you have in space/bay
Star map: please add a small delay needed to open a pop up window just a little if you hover your mouse over a system. At the moment if you slide your mouse across the screen to try to find some system you've bound to clutter up the screen by unintentionally mousing over some system and opening its info window, which presumably requires a db lookup and thus adds unneeded lag.
System map: Would it be possible to please up the contrast a little. Not everyone has a huge LCD.
System map: Please alow us to zoom out further.
Direction scanner: Please, please either bring back the old 2d top down system map or impliment some fancy system map intergrated dynamic cone.
Feh, almost out of characters, which perhaps says something itself.

You can actually click on a module icon that's activated on a ship (top of your screen) to disable it. You can then redirect it to another ship using the normal button.
As for the rest of your post, I agree with most of it.

It's fair enough that we've all paid up so we get a say, but to say that CCP don't care isn't really fair - Eve is their baby after all.
It'd be nice, and probably easier for the developers, if we could stop bickering with each other long enough to get all this stuff in the 'features and ideas' and 'known issues' sections and file reports where ever possible. God, I sound like a right hippy : )

Keep it civil, and stop flaming people who voice their opinions. If you disagree with those opinions, you may state so, politely and hopefully constructively. Aim for the ball, not the player :)
And on another note; CCP does indeed listen to it's customers and users, the amount of posts from the Devs on these boards should show that if nothing else. The fact that they do not answer to every thread voicing complaints doesn't mean they don't care.

All in all, the OP is right. Little things plague this game and really tend to tick people off. For some, rolling the mousewheel after every jump and dock is no big deal. For me, and others like me, its something that is just plain stupid. It should have been fixed the second it was bugged (Years ago).
The mail bug. I know its fixed in the next client version, but JESUS CHRIST why not make it a hotfix? I have to check my mail everytime to make sure I didn't win the lottery, make sure my bonds are growing, wait, did I read that one? Its RIDICULOUS.
So I agree with the OP, he has the right to 'whine' as do we all. ~~~~~~~~~ Caldari. It's so easy a Minmatar could do it. |

Hey, it does happen now and then, can't avoid that, but to me on my first post in months?
And yes, this little thing to me does take away from the enjoyment and "immersion" of the game for me. I mean, a small variable that has the zoom level written to it and is called back when new space (undocking or jumping) is loaded... how hard can that be? I'm sure a lot of the little problems mentioned above are fairly simple to fix, and probably why the bigger ones that are more complex are drawing the focus of attention more.

Well if you're talking about immersion, surely the drone should start out near the ship after each undock and jump. Because surely the camera drone has to return to the ship (even if just returning to close proximity) to jump or dock, then has to be launched again upon completion of undocking or jumping.

Good post Irrilian.
Fact is that EVE has a very poor interface. People go "It's fine! Learn to play! I find it great!" because they've got used to it's bad design.
IMO the entire interface needs to be scrapped and redesigned from scratch but tested properly this time.
And for heaven's sake, give us more UI customisation!

I tend to bash GUI relatively a lot. Still, to say whole interface is poor is not being fair. IMHO it has the best visual design of all popular MMOs. It's clean w/o most of eye candy clutter that gets irritating and only takes up space. It is not trying to invent hot water; uses standards we tend to know from working with OS and programs.
But over years drop-down menu items kept pilling up, nesting went deeper and "favorites" successfully avoided Iceland. Add practically no keyboard support, not even hardcoded one and you get something that could be awsome but it's barely useful. At times I'm thinking functionality design was done by an ex Mac user who got totally blown away by right mouse button
Last but not least, one word: skins.
