Here's the deal. One of my corp mates managed to get neg sec after destroying some git in low sec space. He'd been bugging our mining op and smack talking on local generally making an ass of himself so we popped him. He then put a 5k bounty on my corp mates head.
My corp mate in question is a freighter pilot and rarely ventures into low sec space. My understanding is that if he goes out in his freighter in empire space, anyone can attack him and try to claim the bounty.. that's right yes?
How can we get rid of this bounty? Can it be paid off, or is the only way to lose it for him to get podded or is it that he just needs to be blown up in his ship? If so, can a corpmate do the podding?

Bounties have absolutely nothing to do with the rules of engagement. If your friend's sec drops below -5 (-4.9?) he is fair game for anyone. Until that point - normal rules apply.
If you're still bothered about it, get him to clone jump out of his implants, then you can pod him and clear the bounty.

Getting podded will remove the bounty. However, I see no purpose in such action since you say he rarely enters low-sec. A bounty does not mean he can be attacked anywhere. If he were to venture into low-sec, I doubt anyone would be overwhelmed by the 5000 isk bounty, as to incur some sort of stalking.

People who do try to have a go will find out soon enough that the bounty isn't sanctioned by Concord - fortunately it's often new players that will try, and an Ibis shouldn't make much of a dent in your frieghter before the sentry guns / police pop it : )

Thank you for clearing that up. I was under the impression that a bounty meant you were perma flagged to anyone who wanted to have a go and the prospect of that happening to him while he's in his freighter was too scary!
Thanks for all the replies.
