I could barely believe it but it seems there is no thread on this despite ALL my corpmates experiencing it regularly. We are talking about the time your drones won't attack cos that NPC hacking into your bow from 20k is reported as out of range. Or when your 95 million ISK nos won't engage a target at 15k cos again it 'needs to be under 30k' (paraphrase) - I'll update this with an exact quote from logs when I get the bug again. Corpmate yesterday couldn't activate a gate for about 4 mins. It was too far away at 0. Today I submitted a bug report and am talking to senior GM's about it as they appear to think it's unreported. It would be painful to think so many have got this bug and CCP don't even know. If you see anything in another thread please don't blag about it just add the ref. as I just spent two hours reading and searching through eve-search before posting. Watch this space and fly safe

I have been having this a lot lately.
First it started with looted cans not updating there distant in my overview window.
Now ever now and then even though I'm only 100m from a can i cannot loot it because i get the error must be with in 1,500m to open container. Also when salvaging ever now and then i will get there error that I'm not close enough to salvage even though the can is less that 1000m from me.
I think this is a general bug on all distances, It seems to reset its self if you completely stop you ship, wait a second or so then start moving again. or in the case of salvaging, disengage the tractor beam and reengage.

Looted wrecks, I have seen their distance not update on overview. It always happens when I loot a wreck but opening and closing the overview fixes it. Their actual in game distance does update. They also have to be empty, one that I inspected and did not empty will not show this problem.
Also inacurate distances. I have seen distances to cans and wrecks be reported wrong as well as distances to rats. These instances seem to be the client loosing synch with the server. The one time I saw it with rats was one showing as horribly close but unable to lock or fire on. Once I was able to lock and fire on the rat my and its hits seemed to match with the "server distance" not the distance reported by my client to me. I can live with that, what I would hate would be a rat showing far and be actually near and be unable to lock or shoot.

It is just lag and the same old Overview bugs that have plagued this horribly written game for years. Broke, fixed, broke again. Fixed. Oh, it's broke. Fixed.. Broke. months go by.. Fixed.. next patch.. Broke. Many more months.. too bad.. don't forget to check you new mail. Oh? it's all new. Get those drones on target! Why is my framerate so low?
Too bad the game is so good but written so bad. It's torture.

Yup, had this for quite some time. it doesn't happen to often thank gawd, but it is very annoying when it does, and normally refreshing the overview doesn't even fix it.

I said I would update this when I had more: Lets start by dumping a few myths - this is not lag. It happens at very light usage times of day (and my pings to eve are (weep folks) 12ms... I have found it can occur under various circs, but one which is almost dead reliable - outposts with drone structure. Only 2 or 3 times tried so far, but equally so far every time you kill the structure the bug goes away. Also if you don't move about and just tank the mission the bug does not appear (big envy to Raven pilots.. :) ). If you use a mege or similar just start to move away as usual and kill the structures first - it won't agg the drones. You will then be able to run ur usual 0-tank needed mission with no grief. To CCP devs - please note the structures are causing problems. Take a look at how they integrate and compare with other situations you have had reported.. Good luck. Boring job i know (me chief test engineer in rl.. )

Good question - how do you update a bug report? - Haven't even managed to view mine yet - don't think it's possible.. BTW - update (the exception proves the rule) - someone's killed a structure and immediately after that got the bug.... sigh..

Edited by: Ladyah Liandri on 05/02/2007 10:22:31 Just wanted to add that it happens to me quite a lot too. Had situations where a NPC was so close that I could actually see it's ship orbiting me. Yet my client insists it being at 90km.
A similar thing almost always happens to me while looting & salvaging with a mate cleaned up sites with lots of wrecks. After a short while numerous distances to wrecks get wrong and I have to close/re-open overview several times.
Same thing in PvP. I noticed that almost every time ships get destroyed distances to their wrecks do not reflect their actual position.
It's really quite annoying.

Bug reporting is your friend in those kind of situations. The more bug reports on this issue with all the required info the more likely the BH team and the devs willl be able to pin point the bugs hideout and kill them.

HI Again. I've now also tried this with two chars in an outpost and yes they get widely differing distance reports when the error is happening, and yet the distances correlate fine when the error is not happening. A couple of ppl have reported stuff above which is not what I actually meant by the distance bug, but which may well be part of it/related: overview errors, ie distances wrong in ov and not updating until it is refreshed. However, I suspect this is something else to do with communication with the client, rather than what I suspect to be a server-side error in the distance bug. I think it is server side because: 1. It is not lag related, or related to how long the client has been logged in or to how much else is running (all this has been compared by me from very low to very high loads and I have had +ve and -ve results in pretty much all contexts. 2. It has carried across 3 updates of the client, and I delete and redownload the client and CCP directories on all major revisions. 3. It is not suseptible to anything which I would call pure client manipulation. The only thing that fixes it is to warp out and back - which of course resets all the distances on the server. To those who keep saying bug report it. Please note this is a blog on a bug which has been reported by me. I would update the bug report with it if that were possible in Eve, but it ain't so the Devs are gonna just have to read this - and senior GM Spiral has told me they do.

Can't seem to scan an acceleration gate when getting distance bug on it either - not sure if you're supposed to see gates in scanner tho - never tried it before. Outpost as usual... (pt 1 - obviously)
