Today there was 10 copies of eve in my local game store and a few copies in another.
Game boxes were the same as before and still had the old publishers name on it though.
so was it just a freaky coincidence or is eve back? anyone else noticed

GAME in Derby (UK), started to receive regular resupplies of EVE onto their shelves.
Boxes are the same EXCEPT it now contains a "this is an online-only game, subscription etc. etc. etc." label on the front also.

it was probably just backstock from their warehouse. The new boxes shouldn't have the S&S logo on it. ------------------

hello.... the retail box is a thing of the past...
http://www.eve-online.com/download/
Download the game, fork over $19.95 for the account setup and first month. No mess, no fuss, no cardboard box or cd to collect dust.

Ok so I'm spolied. But hey, even if you don't have a high speed connection maybe you know someone with a CD burner that does. Local cyber cafee, library, whatever.
Maybe CCP can make just the disks available for sale so you order thought the website, pay $19.95 to setup and the cost of shipping if you need a CD. Nothing fancy, just a disk in a mailer to get you started. No expensive box.

ISDN works reasonably fast too - you just set it to download and go to sleep. I know, did it several times.

Edited by: nails on 05/12/2003 19:58:23 the best thing is to have fiber OC3 to your home.. but for those that don't, the realisitic 2nd best is a cable modem connection with a friend working for the isp that can take away your upload cap :) ------------------

You don't need a friend at the cable company! Just redirect the modem to look for the cap config file on a different server and set the cap to whatever you want...
Just don't get banned

My local GAME stores in the UK are selling the retail boxed version of EVE, for ú4.99 with any other purchase. If this is a country wide polices and your thinking about a second account it might be worth a look, Buy a Magazine as well and your looking at 12 quid max, for a new account number and a magazine you were going to buy from W H Smiths anyway.

Scragg, if you weren't aware of it, game sales are dependant on a store presence too. You simply sell more copies if your product is available at major retailers. So CCP would be wise to make sure to put new boxes onto store shelves.
But stores dont want old crap unless they're confident it will sell like hot cakes. So at some point CCP could make a new cover and write "with free expansion Shiva and Castor" on the front page. Just so that the stores will carry the games, and the casual gamer will say "hmm, perhaps I should buy it this time around."

Also when you're trying to persuade someone to buy your product its generally better to make it easier for them rather than harder. Telling your customer that before he can d/l your game he must go away and d/l a manager (which sometimes requires a long time to d/l as well, if you connection is really bad), then come back and d/l the actual game.
Thats not very likely to make them buy your game. I know I wouldn't bother, I'd go buy something else from a shop. Far less hassle, and whilst EVE might be the better game, it might entertain me for longer, I've never played it, so I don't know that. I don't feel I've missed out, so I'm as happy as if I'd have bought EVE, but with less faffing around.
Whats more, a lot of people would not even discover EVE existed without seeing it in a shop. Telling 56k users they have to essentially jump through hoops to get the game isn't going to get many customers.

It'll be interesting to see when CCP find another publisher for EVE. It's more reasonable than charging for things they promised free at the start.
And given the game's running and a success, they should be able to get a very good deal on the box sales.

heheh I'm trying to get my girlfriends brother into EVE (practically a brother in law at this point).
This will possibly make getting the game into his hands as a birthday present a bit easier. (and yes I will be getting him a 6 mo subscription too, would be lame to give someone a game they still need to pay for to even try).
Overal I vaugly remember CCP saying that after Shiva (or maybe around now?), they would be taking the game back to market for a second, more "Full" release (unfortunately further enforcing the paid beta impression some of us have).
One thing that was sad about the initial release was that hardly anyone, not even retail store owners seemed to know what I was talking about when I bought EVE. EVE almost completely slipped in under the radar and if it wasn't for word of mouth and the loyal fans, CCP might not have been successful at all, but who knows I could be wrong about that, since only like what? 10% of the EVE players really even come to this website EVER?
anyway I hope CCP does a relaunch on a more global scale. Complete with TV comercials if they can afford em.
I say a comercial a week or two ago for playstation for the first time, and until the end I SWORE it was a comercial for EVE, It was for the playstation 2 being able to be used online however... But the comercial would have been PERFECT for EVE... Seriously, perfect, it just would have needed some in game video clips.
Anyway good luck with the redistribution CCP (if thats whats going on). The more the merrier!

The GAME in Sunderland (nr. MacDoobies) has always had copies of Eve on its shelves; it tends to be stuck amongst the "2 for ú30" lot.

Advertising in games magazines is far beter value for money. TV adverts are *EXPENSIVE*

True, unless we're talking about console games, with big budgets, then comercials seem to be pretty prevalent, at least when they come from the big names like square for example.
But still, I think an EVE comercial would be cool :)

The more the merrier, indeed. But I do not think Eve warrants tv commercials. They cost big bucks and will demand sales in the millions. Tv commercials is for the soap powder, the McDonald junk food and other crap of this world.
A mmorpg just dont sell that many copies. I'd say that Eve would be be better off advertising in specialist magazines.
