Can anyone recommend a good software package that can be used to create virtual movies?
Preferably with a free-trial ofc.

What kind of movie?
If you mean an effects and editing package, Adobe Premiere is good and Cinelerra is free.
If you mean an animation program, Flash is your best bet.
If you mean a machinma program, The Movies is very good.

if you mean CG movies, I use Maya, the program Pixar uses. it is good, hard to learn , and of course expensive as hell.

Maya is a good choice, also look at Cinema 4D, it's a lot of what was used in Open Season...

I use to use 3D Studio Max for my artistic projects... its very top heavy and a bit system demanding for the particle physics stuff, but its excellent for getting a nice lay. :D
I think the most recent one is 3D Studio Max 8, and you can get a (more or less) unlimited free trial.
Maya is fantastic too. :D

You could probably do some animation useing blender? people ahve made films with it in the past, and it's free

Oh i meant CG movies.
My friend has that Maya and was telling me about it. Sounds like just the thing.
