I'm asking this because I suspect that with lesser explosion radius there will be less chance of your own torps destroying each other. Any feedback from peeps who've had experience with this is appreciated

I'd say it isn't. At least not for fighting ships, might be good against drones etc.

Training it higher is for killing drones and doing fleet damage if you can catch the ships before they start breaking appart.

I would think higher lvl of torpedos would be a detriment. Their large blast radius to begin with already blows away other friendly missels on there way to the target on many occasions, and a larger blast radius would make it worse id assume. But I only have torpedos lvl1 and use cruise missels mostly so I couldn't say for shure. --------------------------------------

I find it remarkable that a skill can affect the explosive radius at all :/ ____________________________________ Taggart wants YOU. Join TTi! *waves his hand in your face in the jedi way* |

Edited by: Sphalerite on 07/12/2003 23:46:37 Depending on your ship, setup, and combat style, leveled up torps might be a decent investment.
On any ship where you're only using 1 or 2 missile launchers, torps are a cheap (skill wise) way to push a good amount of damage out of your extra hislots. On a Raven or Caracal however, torps are suicidal madness.
Leveling torps up won't cause them eat your own missiles if you've only got 2 launchers pushing them out, and you most likely don't want to use them if you've got more than that anyway.
the extra radius is good for killing people's drones on a first strike, nuking lots of ships that come out of warp togather, and doubling up on people who sit next to eachother. What it's bad for is is killing your own drones and any other friendly missiles headed to the same target.
Once frigates and cruisers become more common, you might start to see them orbiting friendly battleships that are using shield and cap transfer units. they have a short enough range that torps could be usefull in knocking them apart and getting lots of splash damage.

Torps are good when you're chasing a frigate/shuttle to a gate and you want to REALLLY **** them off.
The splash damage kills them as they jump
