So, I have an old account but only 5.3 million SP as I've played a month or two here and there for years. I've come back after a long break and have delved into Exploration. Somehow, this seems exciting and fun, so I'm leveling my skills for Covert Ships etc.
In the meantime, I've been working on practicing Exploration in search of Relic sites. I've run into some snags and have some questions.
#1. Just on a whim I found a Wormhole and decided, "what the hell?" and went into it. I spent about 30 minutes probe scanning the area only to find a gas site and other wormholes. As I was trying to zero in on the other unknown sites, I was one shooted by 4 or 5 NPC ships that came out of nowhere. I was in my pod and apparently didn't bookmark where I came in from. I did some reading to find options and came up with self destruction. While everything I read said you would lose skill points in the SD process, I lost none. IS that a first time freebie or has EVE changed in that regard?
#2. Is it possible to find things other than wormhole everywhere in mid/high sec space? All I'm finding are wormholes all over and I've been down to .5 so far.
#3. I'm about to be able to Inject Cloaking. Thank God! IS it possible to remain cloaked while probing and area? If so, how well does it keep you safe in low sec space from NPC's?
#4. If I'm in an area and discover things like wormholes and such, do they remain there or do these things constantly change locations? In other words, if I discover 2 wormholes and a gas site and I bookmark them, will they remain as being discovered if I go back to that area or does it all get wiped to start over?
Are there any other tips one could give a newbie explorer? Are there particular areas that are easier to find Relic sites?
Thanks all! |

1)There is no longer any sp loss, this is a recent change 2)Yes, you need to find the less traveled systems though 3)Yes, you have to be uncloaked to launch your probes but after that you can scan cloaked, you should be perfectly safe while cloaked as no one including NPCs can target you 4)They remain there, but there is a limit to how many times they can be used, this is based both on time and the amount of mass that has passed through them. If you leave system, your scans will be lost but as long as you bm them they will still be there assuming the site has not been completed or the WH has not closed due to previously mentioned circumstances.

In wormholes check for pirate faction relics (Sansha, Blood, Angel, ...), all other relic/data sites have strong sleeper rats. Pirate sites will only appear in wh classes 1-3, check with http://wh.pasta.gg/

Also, don't give completely up on data sites. I know they generally produce less ISK than relic sites, but every once in awhile they drop faction BPC's, which can be worth a significant amount.

This is only true of sites with faction names in the name of the site. If it does not say blood this or sepentis that it is a sleeper site and sleeper NPCs will spawn in 5 minutes. This 5 minutes starts the first time someone warp s in and the NPCs will remain there until killed. They are very tough and will destroy a tech 1 exploration ship in seconds. I lost a Tristan in this manner in a .5 security system so I know it can happen. I had scanned down the site (I forget why I was in a Tristan) and decided to get the loot quick. Up until that time I thought only sleeper sites were in null and learn the hard way that is not the case. |

I've also discovered some none-sleeper sites recently that had NPC's in them in high-sec, but only after hacking a certain (or any, I always go for the big ones first) container. The warp-in message also didn't have a data/relic analyzer logo.

In addition to Paranoid Loyd's answer, the gas/relic/data sites can still be found by other players, making them disappear when emptied. Next to that keep in mind that gas sites might contain loot that is illegal in (certain) high-sec systems.
A final tip, always bookmark the wormhole after you got through, as this is the exit to get back to where you came from.

You were sitting at a gas or ore site uncloaked - sleepers warp in about 20-30 minutes after an uncloaked target lands on those sites' grids.
Quote:#2. Is it possible to find things other than wormhole everywhere in mid/high sec space? All I'm finding are wormholes all over and I've been down to .5 so far.
You are competing against other people who are doing the same thing. In crowded space like highsec, you won't find many sites, and the ones you do won't be valuable.
Quote:#3. I'm about to be able to Inject Cloaking. Thank God! IS it possible to remain cloaked while probing and area? If so, how well does it keep you safe in low sec space from NPC's?
You are always safe from NPCs as long as you aren't in a site. But yes, you can probe while cloaked, and most people do - the protection is from other players probing you out. Ideally you are in a safespot (not on grid with any sites or celestials, accomplished by making a bookmark mid-warp and they can be further refined by warping between safes).

If bookmarked, the bookmarks will remain even after the site or WH disappears. Otherwise, sig hits reset when you leave system or log off, and you'll need to scan them out again. |

Since you have low skill points you're going to find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to hack into cans located in null sec or Class 1-3 wormholes. You only have 2 chances to hack a can, then it explodes and you get nothing.
Head to low sec for a better chance of getting some decent stuff, hi sec is generally a waste of time.
You're really going to want to get into a Cov Ops frig and get those hacking skills up to 5 so you're able to use the T2 code breaker / analyzer mods. You'll also get some help if you put hacking rigs on your ship.

Get your Archaeology to at least IV, V is preferable.
Buy Magnate, fit relic rigs, probe launcher, cloak, analyzer, cargo scanner (if you can), microwarp drive and four warp core stabilizers. Skimp on everything except the analyzer IF you can fit a T2. It should be as cheap as possible.
Scan holes. Don't die. Profit.
If you keep your wits about you, not much short of an Astero packing a faction scram plus one other, or a bubbler will get you. Having said that, if and when you do die your loss will be minimal and after you've completed your first site you'll already be in a position to replace your ship a few times over.
Remember to exit and dump cargo between holes, or even between sites if you find quite a few in the same hole. Nothing worse than dying with a full cargohold.
I have 1.5m sp and I make a steady 50-100m a day without really trying doing exactly this. Sometimes more.
Hope that helps. |

I successfully completed my first exploration into a .4 data site. I cleared 1.2mil in loots and I'm quite happy with that. Learning my cloacking lvl 1 as I type with 10 minutes left so I'm pumped to spend the night exploring.
This is the most involved I've been in EVE since 2004! I always just spent time mining and getting bored, always afraid of PVP in fear of losing my stuff but I sold a PLEX chip for 1.2b and I'm excited to get some good practice in, even if I lose a lot of ships. hah

So why is everything about these tiny ships with low power that demand all of this equipment? Why not load up a Prophecy or something with all of the slots and CPU power you need?

Because it's slow, unbonused for exploration and edible.
Try it and you'll see what mean.

Get more scanning skills and try fitting some scanning rigs. That might do the trick, also, when your probes are at .25AU, playing with the range between the probes (you do this by holding shift) can also get you a few % (only about 5 though, so it won't get you from 68% to 100%)
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=463717&p=1 also has some valuable information.
