OK i'm new to this game and I didn't know about this issue.
I've been looking at courrier contracts not auctions and I've seen some too good to be true offers that despite much digging I can't see an obvious problem with
(8 jumps through safe space 1m3 of cargo 200k reward...where is the catch...) I haven't taken it because of my fear of a scam that I can't catch such as is the cargo illegal and I'll get blown up trying to transport it or is it an item I won't be able to put in my ship, I don't know because the contract doesn't let me see the Item I'm being asked to transport!! so I, as a new player, am not even going to go near these in case of a scam as I have no chance of spotting one.
The same goes for this auction. If I saw an auction for:
10,000 Sabretooth missiles for 1mill ISK and the descrition said Sabretooth Missile, I would think that all made sense and fall for it despite reading the contract as it's not made clear unless you know the "no number means 1" rule that IS NOT advertised anywhere IN GAME that I've seen.
If I checked the 10,000 Missile contract and in description it said 1x Missile, then I'd know it was off and walk away. Sure people too stupid to check the description would still fall for it but at least they have a chance of spotting it and not getting scammed just because they aren't aware of a discrepancy in the game that isn't made clear to players.
This just frustrates new players like me that enjoy risk and do our best to spot them and mitigate them but this "scam" I would of fallen for despite my best checks because I wouldn't of had anyway of knowing otherwise.

All falls into the rules of the game, yes 1/2 of the contracts are scams. The other half are setups. Just look real close, and then buy off the market.
Free-form Professions, ensure no limetations on professions. Be a trader, fighter, industialist, researcher, hunter pirate or mixture of them all.

Now you know that just an icon means 1 unit, so problem solved! Hurrah for knowledge!
Simply asking others before accepting the auction would have prevented you from losing anything.

You cannot make a courier contract for illegal goods, so you have nothing to fear. You also see very clearly the size in m¦ of the package before you accept it, so you also have no fear in accepting a courier you can't fit.
Take the time to ask about things before jumping in. With both your courier and auction problems in this post, there are other posts on the very first page of this forum which explain clearly the answer to both problems. Ask first, act second.
