I'd like to get some opinions from more experienced players.
My buddy and I are three month old chars, we are exploring low sec in a Harby and Helios. Last night we lost our first ship to pirates and i would like to know what we could have done better.
We found a radar site, i cleared the rates as he opened can's. Local Spiked and I started up the D-scanner. Just before we opened the last can I caught Combat Probes on the D-scan and we both safe spotted. He picked a gate and warped cloaky to scout ahead and checked the other side.
This is where we messed up. he informed me that there was a pirate on the gate but the next system was clear. i figured i could warp to zero, get thru and we could both warp to a new system and in an effort to lose the pirates. I warped to zero on the gate, where I saw the pirate my friend had reported, but i also saw 3 other pirates landing at the same time i did.
I got thru and tried to align to something in the direction my ship was facing, but was scrammed and pointed too quickly. I tried to burn to the gate with my reper/ after burner running, but instead my ship melted like ice cream on a hot day.
I got my pod out and dropped gf in local...
What could I have done better?
Thank you

Some times there is little you can do, it seems that you were doing the right things by Scouting and using your D-Scan and safe spots etc. Sometimes it can be a good idea to also fit a cloak on your ship at least that way you can fly to your safe spot and cloak up, most of the time the pirates move on if they can't find you.
In most PvP someone in the gang has Neuts fitted, so your cap goes quickly and if you are active tanked that shuts down, and so do your lazors! etc. Best thing to do is make sure you are insured, unfortunately you can not guard against everything in Eve and sometimes you have to accept the loss.
This loss will however give you kill rights on the guys that shot and destroyed you for 30 days, try getting your own back

The pirate on the gate saw your friend uncloak to jump. Recognizing a covops and probably thinking he was a scout alt, the pirate on gate likely called his buddies to jump.
When you warped to zero and jumped through, a tackler caught you.
You can doubleclick on people in Local and look at their corporations. If there's 3+ people in the same corp in system and one is sitting on a gate, they're probably going to try to pull this maneuver.
However you did basically everything right, like Brego said sometimes you can't do anything about it.
This was much better than MY first lowsec outing though. ;)
Good for you getting out there, and showing sportsmanship by dropping a GF in local. |

Theres a few things you could have done in that situation...
Warped to a planet, cloaked while slowboating in some obscure direction away from the planet (If you have a cloak fitted)
Bounce between rolling safes.. Set these up during slow periods in something fast, then land, align, check d-scan, watch for probes, move to next safe.. this is best done with sets of 5-7, just remember to burn any safe you get caught in (delete it)
When warping to a gate at 0, see how much of the enemy will aggress you. Anyone that aggresses you cannot jump through for a minute, this can be done repeatedly depending on how well you ship holds up under fire, but when you jump through to the other side, hold you cloak for about 5 seconds, then burn back to the gate. Anything with a web bonus will make this very difficult.
Set-up a POS or team up with people that live in the same area, that way you have somewhere to safe up at; few people will mess with a POS in low-sec; its just too screamingly 'Hot Drop Bait'
Accept the idea that more experienced players, are keen to all of this, and will often attempt to counter it. Theres always a fast tackle that won't engage on a gate that you have to seperate from his gang before you can destroy him. Losses will happen, Ships will get exploded, the thrill will never end. First of all there's no such thing as passive alignment. It doesn't matter which way your ship is facing if you're at 0 m/s it will accelerate in any direction at the same rate. Secondly it sounds like you got pretty unlucky, it happens, what matters is though you didn't just panic and sit there, but actively tried to escape and when you did die you didn't just sit there in your pod either. So hats off to you for that. Don't forget if you're not aggressed and there's probes closing in and you're sick of bouncing safes just log off for an hour and they'll lose interest. |

I didn't realize this. Figured he could get thru undetected.

Yeah....we knew the risks. It's not their fault we got caught.

This seems like it's important to know. I think I might have been able to put up a fight if I had waited for some of them to shoot me before I jumped thru...Thank you...

If you see combat probes out keep going between safe spots. Don't sit in any safe longer than 20 seconds.
If you jump through and didn't let them agress first on the other side, hold your cloak until the very last second, burning back to a gate then not being able to jump because of session timer sux.
If you're scouting gates in a cov ops/covert t3/recon warp in at some random distance other than 0 but greater than 50km, 100 and 70km is sort of bad since they are default warp to distances. Start moving in a random direction not towards the gate so you aren't decloaked by someone warping in from a celestial on top of you or some people jumping through and they randomly spawn near where you would have been if you had been moving towards the gate in some fashion.
If you're in a dead end system, you're kind of screwed, if not, scout the other gates for an exit if the one you wanted to leave through already has someone on it. If you find one with no one on it, jump through, align to something and immediately cloak...do this with a hotkey for your cloak, so the second you start moving you cloak up immediately.
If you get caught on a gate and you sit there waiting for them to shoot, and know you can't win, DO NOT SHOOT THEM PERIOD. You will not be able to jump if you agress back for a minute, and that minute is probably going to cost you your ship. Getting them to agress is a good idea, returning fire is not if you're trying to escape. Lock them up and make them think you're going to shoot, but don't shoot if you're going to run. http://youtu.be/yytbDZrw1jc |

The Pirates which know what they are doing following this: Target at Gate in jump range > only ONE ship aggroes, tackler jumps ahead Target at Gate jumps > All non aggroed ships jump too, tackler on the other side is waiting > Dead Target at Gate aggroes > Dead
There is only one safe way to escape (with ships that can't warp cloaked) Cloak - MWD trick You need a MWD and a TII cloak You jump through a Gate, you cloak, you align to a Celestial, Station, Gate, BM and instantly activate your MWD for one cycle. 1-2 sec before your MWD cylce ends you decloak and warp to your alignment. (make sure your MWD is deactivated for the 2nd cycle)
Semi safe way: Nano fitting or speed nano. Anything with an align time below 5-6sec and enough speed is quite safe, anything below 2-3sec is nearly impossible to tackle even with a remote boosted fast tackle Legion with above 2000 scan reso. Eve is working with 1sec ticks be aware of that.
Example: Nano Shield Hurricane All V with 2x Nanofibers TII in low slots 6.3s align time 2205 m/s with heated MWD
You jump through, you align to Celestial, Station, Gate, BM, do not activate warp. Pre overheat your MWD before you activate it and run :), get out of tackle range, deactivate your MWD and warp out. This isn't a 100% safe way as any Rapier, Huginn or Loki with web will most likely catch you. |

Nope. Cloaked or not, the gate will always show activity; either inbound or outbound.

If people are actively hunting you with combat scanner probes in a system and you have no cloak the best thing you can do is stay away from gates, don't try to jump out. Open up your star map and go to system map. find celestials that are separated from each other, like on the other side of the system from each other, etc. Grab safes on 3 different paths between the celestial clusters and make 3 safe spots. This is so you have multiples that are not in probe range of the others. Once you have these 3 safes just bounce safe spots. If you have an aggression timer do this to wait the timer out and then log off. Go watch a movie or something and come back later.
If you do not have aggression of any kind you can simply warp to any safe and log off. Your ship will disappear in about 2 mins or so.
If you have a cloak then just warp to safe and cloak up.
Hope the info helped

You did a lot of things right and sometimes you just get caught. I'ld however have waited on the gate before jumping. Even if one agresses you, that'll be one less on the other side. |

As mentioned above, you sound like you took some precautions regarding the probes etc.
I didn't see anyone mention the WH escape option though. If you are getting camped into a system, and have a prober capable of finding radar sites its worth your time to see if there is a wormhole you can duck into when the gates are camped. |

I knew that your ship disappeared after logging out... I didn't know that it was a bad idea to log during the aggression timer

this was interesting too....is that "as intended"?
This thread has been very helpful to me and my backstabbing helios friend =). Thanks again

The Cloak - MWD trick is no exploit, it works "as intended" and is very annoying for most Pirates. |
