I think so. I think it basically refers to someone "getting bbq'd". Like I warp into a system, a guys gate camping, he blows me up in 2 seconds, and I go "OMGWTFBBQH4X!". Makes perfect sense 
Oh, another one I had to ask about way back when was "ftw!" and "ftl!", which mean for "for the win / lose", in the context of something that is really really exceptionally good or bad (eg. "OMG my nanophoon pwnmobile just blew up over 9000 enemies! Nanophoons ftw!").

also from the leetspeak thing.
Leetspeak cunningly replaced letters with numbers and became the "secret language of youth culture"
like all youth culture it quickly became passe and outdated which resulted in ironic leetspeak:
"ZOMG U R t3h rulz00rs!!11one!eleven"
this has also become passe and somewhat old now and ppl doing this are in fact making themselves look "outdated."
Ironically thousands of people used leetspeak at one time but if you ask anyone they will deny all knowledge, like the ppl that bought that song then deny all knowledge 2 years later when they are dying their hair black and saying "crying proves im a man, man."

no, pwn actually originates from "own" as in to totally dominate someone. "I totally owned your arse!" etc....but since the p/o keys are right next to each other(on qwerty), it probably started as a typo and then seemed cool, and now is used pretty much interchangeably.
I still pronounce it "own" though I've heard many pronounce it pawn'ed or pown'ed.
another not so well known internet speak, "woot" = "we own the other team". fairly certain that's accurate, though I could be wrong

woot, although it used to mean "we owned the other team" now is just generally used as an expression of joy.
As in:
"Woot! i WTFBBQPWNED their ass!!!1111eleventyone11!!11!oneoneoneone!

Really as someone who never really heard of 1337 speak until I started playing MMO's two years ago, I think that its more popular now with people trying to be funny then when it was used seriously.
Its really easy to be funny mocking leet speak.
I get a chuckle out of all of them.
The OP needs to just read the Wikipedia article on 1337 speek and then he will know all and laugh along the rest of us when someone says ZOMGWTFBBQH4X!!!11!!one!!eleventy11!!
And also you need to learn the term Leeroy Jenkins and watch the southpark episode where they all are playing WoW. Then watch the little .gif animation or whatever it is about the -50Dkp! guild raid leader. Then you will pretty much catch up. YouTube can find the Leeroy Jenkins vid and all its parodies as well.

That's part of what makes it so funny to me. Heh..
Anyway...after all this time playing this game, I still rail at the acronyms/nicknames used for the ship classes in this game. A battleship will always be a BB to me, even in EVE.
