"FFB: EVE Online is one of the few games that have one giant server which harbors every player. What has been your biggest server problem technically seen?
CCP: In the initial technical design for EVE, the server architecture was assembled with the goal of supporting up to 100,000 subscribers. Today we are well past that limit."
Past that Limit??? WTF? Dont we only have 30k players at peak hours and on regular basis around 17-27k??? Or am I not understanding English correctly? Or is CCP using "tricky" language here saying that we have more then 100k SUBSCRIBERS, as in counting trial acounts and all that junk, when in reality this sounds that we can handle 100k players ONLINE(lol imagine that...in JITA)??? I mean who cares how many subscribers we have...we can have 20 zillion, but I think what FFB was asking here is "how powerful your hardware is" and "how many players LIVE" can it handle, and "what problems did it therefore face"...
maybe first week of college produced too much adrenaline in me and Im being word picky. I love Eve and I think it is much MUCH more realistic than any other MMO out there (legal corp theft - cmon guys, how much more harcore can you get? Corruption? I come from Eastern Europe and Im loving it...feels like Im back home )null

Subscribers. As in people who pay to play.
And if anyone knows, whats the current subscriber count up to then? I imagine 130k orso at least..

ok, so whats the big deal about "having our hardware made so it supports 100,000 subscribers"? I mean you dont need CPU or graphics for that...pretty much every online billing service got that, ebay, paypal, online banking...and I bet the one's I listed support up to millions of subscribers, not 100k. Again, probably it is much harder to have 100k subscribers and to make the scripts/applets to collect all their credit card info and to protect it too... so Im probably wrong here...

Yeah must be the first week of college, or some other seemingly unrelated event. They're not being tricky in the least; they're just talking about the player base irrespective of location. Baring the occasional service hiccup, every paying customer does get to play, don't they? Sounds like they're supported then, so relax.

They mean 100,000 subscribers over all timezones. Eve is played all over the world, and while we only get 37k PCU on a busy day, there's 130k to 150k actual subscribed accounts.

There may be 34K connections to the server at any one given time, but how many of those connections are unique (ie, how many players actually logged in in any given 23 hours)?
CCP, we demand unique connection statistics!

The 100000 or so people who aren't logged in still have entries in the database. Just think of bookmarks, items in hangers, and market orders.

While I do not know who answered the questions, I would say Oveur if I was forced to make a guess. For the number junkies, EVE has over 155k subscribers and another approximately 20k trial accounts. On 14 January, we had 34,420 accounts logged in to EVE.
The server hardware is capable of handling over 100k concurrent accounts as the quote claims. We would prefer a bit of distribution on the part of the player base and not 1k+ players in Jita, but it should be possible to have a playable game with no major blobs in hub systems.

Edited by: Rigsta on 25/01/2007 02:19:12 That sounds impressive, I'd like to see it actually happen.
Stuff like that is why I respond "you wouldn't understand, let me give you a trial account key" when people ask me why EVE is better than WoW. Then wait for the "which server are you on?" followed by the "erm, 30,000?" when they actually get to the login screen.
Often followed an hour or so later with "that tutorial is longer than my attention span". Sigh :)

now for reality petitions go unaswered and a lot of ppl lagging out even at 20k. So lets not make some grand claims before in reality is reflected in a playable game
