This skill is completely useless:
Afterburner - Improved afterburner duration. +10% Bonus per level.
Since you can click on auto-repeat on for afterburners and your speed remains constant (afterburners always on).
The auto-repeat for afterburners should work like this:
1. afterburners are on, depending on this skill you should get longer burn. 2. speed returns to normal max speed. 3. afterburners switched on again. Repeat ...

yes but you see, everytime you activate your afterburners they use cap. So if stage 1 is 10% longer, that means you use 10% less cap in the long run.

Exactly. This effectively reduces cap usage over time by 10% per level. Actually, I believe the true usage improvement is 1 - (1/(1+.1*AB Level))
Nonetheless, afterburner skill + fuel conservation stack to allow you to keep your burners going indefinately w/o running out of cap. When I first got ABs, my cap would run out in a few minutes. Now my cap recharges (albeit much slower) while using the AB. ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |

Yes I agree. But even without the 10% bonus you are still using the same capaciter amount for each burn. I suppose you would drain the capaciter less frequently. Still pretty useless.

fuel efficiency skill will reduce cap usage. Firing off 3 at once takes 50 cap for me now. .

How could you consider this useless? Consider this.
Afterburner x= 20 units of energy every 10 seconds Person A has 1 point of skill in afterburner and runs it for 1 minute, total energy used= 100 units Person B has 3 points of skill in afterburner and runs it for 1 minute, total energy used= 80 units
The longer you use your afterburner the bigger the diffrence you will see, and if you are using close ranged weapons and need to get to the preferred range of you guns for max damage, it would be nice to have that extra energy for your shield generators during combat, or whatever power using toys your ship may have equipped. If you prefer long range engaments for combat you must be faster than your opponant to keep the range where you want. If you happen to use more than one afterburner at a time the effect become MUCH more pronounced. Considering the cost of this skill (it's cheap), and the benifits given, I would be hard pressed to call this skill worthless. Pandorea

Did you read what the skill does? it increases afterburner duration, not decrease capacitor use directly.
So lets say 10pts of cap are used for 10 sec of afterburner.
With lev 1 of this skill 10pts of cap are still used for 11 sec of afterburner.
If you use 10 afterburners in a row at lec 1 (110sec) you still have 100pts of cap usage over time.
Basically for 1 cap you get 1 sec of afterburner. With lev 1 you get 1.1 sec. Lev 5, 1.5 sec.
Big deal.

It is a big deal. Suppose you're chasing someone that you're at war with. You both have identical ships with identical components that travel at the same rate of speed.
He has afterburner skill at 3, you have it at 1. Guess what? He'll get away since he can sustain his afterburner longer than you.

I really doubt that. Remember you are re-generating cap at the same time. And there are other skills that affect speed much more. The fact that his afterbunrner is slightly longer is negligible.

Ubiq, because you don't understand the use of the skill does not mean that it is useless. Using Afterburners by themselves, I would agree it doesn't do much. The major difference comes in when using the Afterburners along with other things. For instance, when using 2 guns with the Afterburner going, I can fire many more shots because the duration of the afterburner is longer. The extra 3 seconds that the AB are going allows my capacitor to recharge for my guns instead of just the AB.
If you can't understand this, fine. You are losing out by saying it offers no real reward for training it. You will be the one that gets hurt in the long run.

Autorepeat if you dont understand it just means the item is activated again instantly at the end of each duration - it takes the same cost each activation - a longer duration simply means that cost is deducted less often.
AB with no skill = 20 cap use every 10 seconds AB with skill 5 = 20 cap use every 15 seconds
50% lower
combine it with fuel conservation (-10% cap use per burn, though currently bugged and only giving 5% in effect)
AB with AB 5 and Fuel con 5 = 10 cap usage every 15 seconds
1 cap per 3 seconds burn instead of 2 cap per 1 second burn .. you dont see that as a substantial drop in cap usage ?!?
Also afterburner skill 4 is a pre-requisite for High Speed manouvering (MWD)
Acceleration control adds more speed for the duration of the burn and improved afterburners up the base .. add it all in and a ship that could do a 30 second burn with 3 aftrerburners to go 500 can end up burning *indefinitely* for 2500 speed and even regenerate cap upwards

Zyrla has it right. For a given amount of time, AB skill reduces cap consumption.
A better comparison than 1 cap per second vs. 1 cap per 1.5 seconds (Lv5), is 1 cap per second vs. .66 cap per second. ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |

It defo helps greatly.
But remeber to comnbine it with Navigation which raiese your top speed and then you get the best benefit.
WIth Nav 4 and AB 4 you get 40 % extra burn time for your capacitor use and also your top sepeed is raised. Youd be stupid to have one skill without the other ;0p
And you need AB 4 and Nav 4 for MWD ;0p

Don't forget acceleration control.
With AB 2, Fuel Cons 2, AC 2, Nav 3, triple OD injectors, and two afterburners, my Tristan can hold 660 m/s for a LONG time. With one AB, it's 480 m/s with my cap recharging slowly. ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |

heh, just for sh!ts and giggles, I equipped my Tris with 2 Cold Gas Arcjets, one AB, three enhanced overdrives, Acc control lvl3 AB lvl3 Navi Lvl4, And it gets to about 1320m/s.
If I can get another arcjet, it'll be doing 1500+. One burst is already enough for docking/most jumpgates.
I'm looking forward to the races :) .

Yup. Since my last post I tried a load out of 3 stock ABs and 3 ODIs - 1039 m/s with AC3 and Nav3.
VERY nice for running agent missions. If NPC pirates jump me I can leave them in the dust in the race to the gate. ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |

Ubiq, lets give your simple mind a math problem.
Pressing afterburners makes you 25% faster for 10 seconds, but costs 10 capacitor out of your total of 1000 cap.
That means you can use afterburners for 16.67 minutes (a single one).
Now less say you upgrade them and now you get 25% speed for 13 seconds but costs 10 cap out of your total of 1000 cap.
That means you can use afterburners for 21.67 minutes off 1000 cap.
Now alot of ships have 2,3 or even 4 afterburners. And when you have no cap, you can't warp or boost shields. Considering you generally land 20-60KM from a station, your going to need to use afterburners for at least a few minutes.
Now consider a combat situation. Your shield booster, warp (escape) and your weapons all draw on cap. You see an enemy, you engage afterburners to close distance. I will bet you want to have as much cap available once you open fire as possible.
It may not be the best skill on the market but it does have its use.

ah, well 420 m/s in a 8500 cargo bestower is not bad, and i can do that for a long time, 5+ mins. next accell controll ill go 500+ m/s.
but tricked out with some overdrives i think ill be able to hit 1km/s
anyways, do the skills apply on the MWD as well?

From what I can tell so far (only got my mwd's last night) they don't.
Afterburner only affects afterburners and arcjets, and HSM only affects MWD's.
As ever, I may be wrong, but I've seen nothing to indicate that I am. Yet.
my fastest config so far goes as follows:
exec cruiser:
mid 2 MWD's 2 Arcjets low 3 SS Type-E overdrives
skills:
AB4 HSM1 AccCtrl3 Navi4
This got me up to a rather terrifying 32km/s.
A full cap got me 750km from base.
Enough to outrun the m0o? I hope so. .

Even if the afterburner skill didn't do anything useful (even though it does), you still need level 4 for MWDs :)

Just as a point, but the afterburner skill has an important point, you cant use afterburners without it :-P
the 10% increase might not be that much, but at level 1 you use it 10 times, it uses up 100 cap and it lasts for 110 seconds (1min 50). At level 3 you use it lasts for 130 seconds (2min 10) and uses up 100 cap.
As with all skills they may not have a dramatic effect on your life, but through building up all the little bonuses it improves your ship

Yeah, the afterburner skills stack on the MWDs. My power consuption went from 60 to 54 after I trained fuel conservation. And my Overcharged Hydrocarbon MWD does 960% since I have the Acceleration Control skill.

It may also help, if you have several AB's fitted. Rather than running all at once (and placing a heavy drain on the capacitor), you could also alternate them eg. Set all AB's to manual, then turn on AB1. Once your speed starts to drop again, turn on AB2, once your speed starts to drop, turn on AB1 again etc... You wont get such a boost of speed as with all AB's on at once, but you could travel for longer at a slower (but still AB enhanced) speed. |

Run 3 y-s8 hydro afterburners on my Thorax at all times. Never take a hit in cap until I bring guns online.
The afterburner skills are excellent, and in thier own way just as important as the Controlled Bursts skill particularly for hybrid users. It was much more signifigant before the mwd/ab nerf, but still the difference is important...basically having good levels in all these skills allows me to run my Thorax at a sustained 600m/s+ at all times.

Actually, this is not good cap economy. You will get the best yield if you fire all your AB's for as long as you can and then turn them all off while you regain cap. Why is this best? Two reasons: 1) Your AB's stack. If I fire one AB on my Bestower, I get 50 m/s more out of it. The next one adds 67 m/s, and so on up to the fourth which boosts me an extra 129 m/s at the same cap cost as firing the first one would do. So, firing four at the same time spends four times as much energy but boosts me 6.8 times as much. 2) Your cap recharges faster the lower it is. So, if you keep your cap high by only running one AB, you are essentially getting less energy out of it per second then if you ran it to the max.
