I am not new to MMo's but I must say Eve is very interesting game and I am liking it, but very overwhelmed. So much details here I don't know where to start :(
Is there a detailed guide anywhere, or some good tips to get started.?

Find some people to fly with - look in the Recruitment forum. EVE University are good at bringing new players into the game.

Edited by: Remedios Sonrisa on 24/01/2007 18:44:07 The guides are very useful, but the problem is that the information could also overload you. Best advice I would give to new Eve players is to relax and expect to go down a long road full of rewards with some heartbreaks in between the journey. Dabble in the various aspects of the game, but one or two at a time. There is no "end-game" in Eve. Expect to be killed anywhere except when in station -- it is the only safe place in the game. Don't worry about losing a ship here or there for the first few months, it happens. You will have enough ISK to buy the nice and pretty ships, mods, etc. This is a very diverse game, with mostly 'mature' players, so you should be able to find help here or in your corp channel. You are welcome to ask any questions -- no such thing as a stupid Eve question -- in our channel under "Eve University".
Again, just enjoy the game. You are starting off on the right foot by seeking guides, but ultimately you will have the best knowledge by playing the game and learning from mistakes. ..

Three words.
Do the tutorial.
Normally I blow past tutorials but in this game, you do it, or you have a ton of options in game and icons, and you won't know how to do it. Especially combat.

my friendly word of advice, is to be patient and take your time. Enjoy flying frigates, and have fun doing it before moving on to something bigger. Take that attitude towards everything in Eve, and you will maximize your enjoyment. Those that rush to the largest ships available miss out on alot of fun. Also dont mistake a bigger ship as being invincible against a smaller. Many a cruiser's are lost to frigates and so on...

I am in no position to be offering advice, but I was also feeling overwhelmed when I started. It takes quite a while in training skills and lots of isk to reach a point where you can get along in eve space. So I did (and still do trading). Search the market for items with imbalances in price. Go buy them and then go somewhere else and sell them for a profit. You make money and at the same time get confidence flying around. You also learn what happens when you go somewhere you are not prepared for.when your confidence increases go out and kill something. Buy insurance and have fun.

Consider joining EVE University. No other player corp has as high a reputation in being an altruistic and competent platform for new players to get to grips with what is easily the most complex MMORPG in existance. They should be able to give you valuable advice and training no matter what career you might consider, and also know how to defend yourself from unwanted attention while plying that trade.
Plus they not only offer protection from war decs, but even teach you how to survive them! |

This might be a dumb question but where, and how do I join this Eve University? is it in game or on a site?

I would say read the threads posted above, read all the guides you can get your hands on and join the university. Don't expect to understand all of the guides or what is going on. After a few weeks read the guides again and a much larger percentage of what is written will make sense.
I was COMPLETELY overwhelmed when I started and sometimes still am. Do no be afraid to ask questions and anyone who makes a "smart" comment about your questions ignore. We all had to learn sometime.
My 2 biggest questions when I started were: What is the difference between Rank's and Levels with Skills? What do the ship skills do other than allow you to fly the ship? Why should I train Frigate to 4 when I only need it at 2 or 3 to fly all the frigates?
Silly questions to someone who knows the game and I got one or two rude comments when I asked but the majority of people were really helpful and supportive.
So my point after rambling on is ASK QUESTIONS no matter how silly they may seem to you. Do the tutorial and do NOT expect to know everything right off the bat. Get lost and enjoy doing it.

Don't expect to understand everything in a day, even in a week. It will take months for you to learn enough about this game to not feel so overwhelmed.
