Alright. Given that these are the eve-o forums, this idea must have been proposed at least once. I haven't been able to find a previous thread yet, so here we go again...
In various sci-fi books/novels, tv shows, and films, every once in a while a cloak is used to project a different IFF / sensor signal for the ship. Not making it undetectable, per say, but simply making a Megathron look like -oh say- a Serpentis Rookie.
Now, every plot written indicates the requirements for a device like this would suck huge amounts of CPU and PG, making the ship with it mounted nothing more than a target. But if you have lots of cloaked friends....
Anyway, opinions? I can imagine lots of scenarios where this would be fun, but would it be a worthwhile addition to eve? And where has this been discussed before (assuming it has)?

Sure, I'd go for an IFF switcher that made me blue to everyone while active
"Hey guys, this hauler's blue to us, don't shoot it!"
Would be useful since some corps/alliances have ridiculously long positive lists and it would take work to determine if you really were a bad guy or not.

I suggested the same thing in the Ideas forum a while back but it sank without a ripple.
I think it would be an awesome module, for pirate hunters especially. ___________ Composed primarily of meat. |

However, it would have to disable upon targeting.

Exactly.
The comedy of appearing in Jita as a Croki roid would be priceless. Assuming you could survive the lag.

Yep. And there should probably be some recalibration time to lock anything after that.

Would be useless since NPC's don't show on scanner anymore. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Taiatia (mods@ccpgames) |

Not completely useless. You can be indentified as another ship, wich in some cases can be useful =)

I like this idea, and have thought about it for a little while now.
My take would be based on the Q-ships of World War I that Britain used against U-boats. So, I would suggest the following:
- passive targeting only while the "Q module" is active. Any other would reveal your ship's true nature.
- no weapons could fire until a period of time after the module has been deactivated. Similar to current cloaks, but shorter.
- limit the ships you can masquarade as to those of similar size (as mentioned above).
- Allow CONCORD & the Navies to use it, if we're going to faction warfare. After all, protecting commerce is vital in wartime.
Appearing as an asteroid doesn't make sense to *me*, but I won't speak against it. After all, if someone wanted to hide a Titan, what better way?

Miner takes a risk, heads into unfamiliar territory (low or nosec). Finds a GREAT roid belt stuffed full of the kinds of roids he's looking for... only to have them ALL decloak and nuke him.
That not only makes mining more heart-pounding (is one of these roids an enemy?) it also makes piracy more fun (not easier, mind you, just more fun). Currently from what I can see stealth tactics are pretty mundane.
