If it's not obvious, I'm a noob, esp. to EvE-politics.
With what I've learned lately about them I ready to hang this out for those who wanna bite. What alliances are what? Who is who?

theres not really any good or evil, black or white merely shades of grey
however, everyone and their mother seems to have band of brothers down as evil, the end of eve, the boogeymen etc.
i recommend lurking in caod lots of reading to be done to actually get a decent opinion of the current politics

They are all the same...
Just different colours on the map.
They all strive for their own self interests.
Whether it be Domination, Industrial Prospects or just plain Colonization.
They just throw smack back and forth.
BoB throws about 2x as much smack on the forums than any other corp. But that might just because they have a right to with their large empire. ;)

How many Alliances ARE there total I wonder. The number will prolly fluctuate, but it should have some sort of median. |

There are currently a crapload of alliances in Eve.
Most of them are on the one to one hundred something character level tho, but there's still a damn lot that are say, 500 people or bigger.
There's only about 5 that really matter politically when it comes to Evewide impact tho.

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 24/01/2007 21:52:27 There is no white or black, but there are colors.
Band of Brothers is one major side. Their allies include Xelas and Firmus Ixion, plus their vassal corporations, which rent areas of their space. BoB primarily occupies the Southwest.
Dusk and Dawn is another major side. Their allies include other major entities in the northern "NAPwagon" as some call it. They and their allies occupy most of the North.
Lotka Volterra is third major side. Their allies have been slowly whittled down over the past year, but they still hold a lot of space in the Southeast and are one of the prime opponents of Red Alliance.
Red Alliance is a fourth major side. Their allies include Goonfleet and others, and they have been fighting LV for quite a long time in the southwest.
A fifth major side appears to be emerging in the middle of the South: AAA, IAC, SoD, and others who aren't actively fighting for or against the other three major Southern powerblocks, but still have a lot of members, capital, and an agenda.

If you take a look at all major alliances, they are all seen as evil to someone. This people keep screaming "Ohoh, those guys are the true evil, look what they've done" and every uninvolved guy start to make him an opinion. By that, poeple tries to makes themselves seen as the rigth so people will enter their alliance. That's the game there. Also 0.0 wars are played to win so nobody could survive here. Those who play for fun go back in Empire fastly.
You should try to read this thread. It shows how the last 2/3 0.0 wars was perceived by one player. There's a lot of interesting link in it anyway (evewiki etc) -----

Some alliances (like mine) set ourselves up as the good guys. Others deliberately play the villains.
In the end, it all boils down to a kind of glorified gang culture - we all wear our colours with pride, and while the tactics and overall strategies may vary, in the end it all comes down to holding on to your turf. Some alliances do it by turtling and looking to repel whoever comes close. Others take the "best defense is a good offense" approach and are near-permanently on the attack.
Both of these approaches result in the alliance in question making enemies. The "stay-at-home" types are seen as weaklings and carebears, the expansionists are seen as arrogant bullies.
in other words, an alliance cannot be inherently good nor evil.

BoBs evil because everyone loves to hate them, they have the whole evil empire thing going on :) If I had to dub an alliance as "good" I'd pick Ivy League, their the closest thing we got to a charity.

Also, if you really do have an interest in politics, try frequenting the COAD section of the forums.
You might also try reading eve-tribune, we do seem to have some knowledge about politics, and usually present it so that newer players might catch up easily.
Here, on my sig, you have the logos of most important alliances at the moment. (From left to right) Band of Brothers, Lotka Volterra, Dusk and Dawn, Against ALL Authorities, Red Alliance, and Goonswarm (which, although apparently subservient to Red Alliance atm have too nice a logo not to be put there)

Only because BoB is on top atm and not showing any signs of giving up the summit.. And when they eventually fall and some other alliance gets to that position then the new top dog will be the whipping boy for all the vanquished.. rinse repeat..

They sure have a lot of accounts
