Edited by: Michelle Vega on 26/01/2007 12:54:37 As most of you know we are a bunch of mobile junkies in Finland and a small group of us EVE players got together and developed (using code from another program which does the same) an application for use on Symbian OS which allowes you to login and check / change skills.
However, there are several issues:
- The application doesn't work with WAP - The application is too large (1.24mb) - The application has no encryption or security - The password passes through our server unencrypted - Anyone who uses the application should be aware that we can see your username and password - The application works well on 3G connections but very poorly on GPRS connections
We are now running version 0.08 which is stable, and would like to know if anyone wants to help develop the software further. The software is free and Open Source so anyone is welcome.
Keep in mind the security issues. We all opened test accounts for the testing and development and suggest the same to anyone who wishes to help test and develop the software.
This software is not affiliated with CCP and if for some reason we manage to get a really nice version of it working, it will not be released unless CCP has checked it and approved it. So don't get your hopes up yet.
Leave an EVEmail with Michelle Vega if you would like to help out. Unfortunatly only 3G testers will be considered but any developer is welcome!
Fly safe.

Well that would be nice, since we have several issues we simply can't overcome.
Version 0.09
- Added fixed IP address for server - If EVE is offline a message is shown instead of a timeout message - Fixed crash if ship is not docked - Added 'save password' to mobile application
The server is running a HDD copy for Knoppix (Linux) and only a 1mb/512kb connection to Eve, max 5 simultanious connections (HW limitation).
We might have to abandon this prject :( and hope CCP comes out with a better solution.

I think that if they do something like that they should do it for the web also. If i need to change a skill at work i should be able to go to the site ad change skill. It would be unfair to all of us poor folk if we have to have a cell phone, then we may have to pay extra charges for some bull**** from the phone company for doing so. If thats going to be an option, doing from the eve site should be done first.

Thanks for the feedback.
A few of you helped with the code for 0.09 and it turns out that the system we are using is such a huge risk that it is better to completly give up. It is fun to do for a couple people, but we simply don't have the tools or resources to make this a fully functional and secure system.
Yes, a small interface which allows skill changes online would be nice (and would save from having to download 500+ mb on each system just to login and change skills).
Project terminated.

Actually, the version CCP are making is NOT for symbian, its for PocketPC... so unless you want to move to a PPC based device, you will need to keep working on this solution.
I am very interested in the tech used to do this, can you post some technical details on how you change the skill?
Do you launch an EVE client and use macros? Or have you reversed the protocol and can send the required packets to trigger a skill change?

Maybe CCP could release a minimal self dependant exe that would allow people to log in and check skills, change them.
I wouldnt mind seeing the mobile client, it would be nifty.
