hello!
my end goal in this game is to solo pvp. i've heard that gallente is the best race for this. have i made a mistake in picking caldari, and wind up burning many hours training the skills needed to fly their boats and have i wasted many hours training missile skills?
thanks!

The race of your character does not matter. You can buy skill books and train to fly ships of other races. A lot of people cross-train much later in the game. Generally Gallente and Minmatar ships are considered to be good for solo pvp, while Caldari and Amarr ships are more suited for group pvp.

Hi!
You can still learn to fly any of the other race's ships even if you are a Caldari. They say guns are better than missiles for pvp probably because guns are instant hits as soon as they are activated, this way gives your opponent less time to react or run away.
Missiles have to fly their way there, and it gives them time to run. (meep!)
Guns are also supposed to be better DPS than missiles.

You certainly haven't wasted anything. Gallente and Minmatar have more ships suitable for solo pvp, indeed. Minmatar ships often utilize missiles as a second (or even first) weapon system, they also have quite some shield tanked ships so you can use those skills even if you fly minmatar.

In an idealized situation (perfect range, zero transversal, etc.) this is true. That said there are more ways to mess with a gun's damage when getting shot at then there is for missiles (e-war can shut them down while missiles have FoF, tracking, tracking disruptors, etc). Missiles always hit, guns do not.
If you can dictate the encounter (range, etc.) guns can indeed deal more damage but many people find missiles easy mode (in comparison to guns) to be well worth the somewhat lower DPS.
In the end a matter of preference...either weapon system is viable.
Note: In Fleet PvP missiles are considered to be the least useful...especially when at long ranges.

thanks for your replies.
i understand that i can train up any skill, i'm just interested in minimizing the fairly intensive amount of time needed to do that.
i suppose my options are somewhat limited in that regard, since i have already spent too much time as caldari to restart from scratch. many months of training hybrid/gallente lay ahead.
on a related note, is it a good idea to use my caldari missile skillset to run missions/gain ISK in order to afford the gallente pvp ships/weaponry i will need for solo pvp?

There is nothing wrong with Caldari ships. In fact they are probably the most popular ships in EVE. For missions missile skills are considered the ideal way to go. Sure other race's ships can do missions fine but missile boats really excel at it.
For Caldari ships you also have the option of using hybrid guns (rails) on many of their ships. While this means training up gunnery skills you need not switch to another race's ships to use guns. Once you have both missile and gunnery skills trained up you have a load of options at your disposal.
Bottom line do what you wish but do not feel you are somehow behind a curve because you use Caldari ships.
