.. or at least it has been postponed.
In the newbie corp I am in, there has been maybe 10 new active players on the corp channel since the downloading option became available. We had maybe 3 during the month leading to it.
I suspect at least good portion of the trouble Eve has had lately may have been due to trouble obtaining a copy of the game since SSI went under and thus replacing the people that leave with new ones.
People will always leave, and people who are leaving or see their friends leave think it is the end. Two of my friends have left within last week, yet I am more optimistic than I have been in quite a while.
Disclaimer: Obviously, this doesn't solve the problems, I am not implying anything of the sort.

I was actually trying to point out that things are looking up. While it is sad for me personally to see my friends leave, that is the way of the online-games. People are always leaving.
On the flip side of the coin, the influx of new players seems to have been fixed, and that is a big big change to how things were a week ago. This is what I am trying to communicate here to the players that don't hang around in newbie channels.
New players bring enthusiasm and excitement. They also increase the chances of even more new players dramatically, since the game is only marketed by its players, it seems.
As for my friends, they are adults and they make up their own minds. I do miss them in-game, but every one must make his own mind. I am just glad that at least there seems to be quite a few people coming in as well and not only leaving.

People see that 2 or 3 friends leave, they post on the forums "all my friends left Eve! OMG", a load of gonks read the forums, make a quick calculation in their pea-brains.
"Hmm... 2 + 2 = -676464
OMG! Eve is dying!!!"
The End. Servers will be switched off next week.

I think the very fact that we got 5500 players all on at once last night says somthing about how the servers wont be switched off next week ;)
