I just started using an auto-targetter on my Bellicose.
I use a target painter, 3 Heavy Launchers and 780mm Arty Gun. I figured considering power and cpu consumption an auto-targetter sounded pretty good for long range combat and allowed for another 2 max targets in the belli. (Belli is great for battlefield strat - you choose what to paint, what to launch missiles at and what to set drones on). I figured it would be neat, but it doesn't really seem to work. It often targets gas clouds and never targets enemies any differently than the UI flag you can set that automatically targets people targetting you. The only benefit I seem to get from it is the +2 to max targets (making 9 total for me).
Can anyone tell me what's up with this module or should i just replace it with something else ?

this really belongs to the ships and modules discussion, but it's ok :)
The autotargetter is frankly only useful if you want to make a dedicated salvager/mission loot scooper ship, and even then it's not entirely that great compared to a sensor booster / cap recharger (for MWD) unless you are really good at multitasking LOTS of scooping/salvaging processes.
Finally, for PvP most people will disregard this module completely (hence the low prices) and fit anything different than that. It's just one of those modules that are either mis-designed, outdated or simply not as good as anything else for that slot :)

I always see auto targeters price at 1mill which is more expensive than a few named sensor boosters

Edited by: Revolution Rising on 28/01/2007 01:41:50 Sensor boosters take a medium slot, Auto-targetters a high slot. btw. (Also I already have a sensor booster).
Sorry for posting here, been on the forums about a week, don't quite know my way around yet ;) I'll pay more attention ;)
For very low cpu/powergrid left on the ship, what else could I put here that would help in the targetting/long range stakes?
If this module worked it would be great. It cycles every 5 seconds and is supposed to target unfriendlies near you AUTOMATICALLY. Which means people who have already targetted you when your targets were at max, people who were out of range when they did target you etc - really great for mission running against mass drones etc..
IF it worked. It doesn't.

Basically people probably prefer to have their targetting trained to 3-4, perhaps multitasking even, on bigger ships and CTRL+Click things on their filtered overview :)
Also, if your setup misses a highslotout because of the powergrid/cpu on a cruiser, then it might be reasonable to lower the tiers of your weapons/plating and consider equally distributing the pg between the systems in a fashion filling your slots with offensive modules, rather than life-simplyfying modules, as those will rarely add to the value of your ship in combat :)

I would find them very usefull it they worked. It's very nice for : - hi speed enemies who get out of range periodically - gate camping - targetting cycled drones - reaquiring targets after getting out of jamming sequences.
PS: Don't flame me again for speaking my mind, hahaha.
