How hard would it be to place on the tactical overlay, and option that lets you triangualte a position of an object or ship? Example... you sitting at gate 100km away, a hostile warps in to gate and it 50km from you... give us an option that can select 3 points (yourself always being one) and two other... in this case the gate and the hostile... to figure out the hostiles distance from gate.
Would be nice to have.

sounds exactly like the old probing system :P

well no because you wouldn't need probes. But it would be nice to know how far an object or player was from a gate or station for example.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just show distances relative to the object you're looking at (optional ofc)? So, to figure out how far that guy I'm certain you don't intend to shoot, no sir is from the gate all you have to do is click the look at button. Hmm, how about a second button, the normal "look at" and a "look at (origin)"?

What, basic subtraction is now too hard for EVE players?
Your distance to gate - hostile's distance to you = distance to gate.
Besides, what you're asking for isn't triangulation, it's distance finding. Triangulation is used to find your position relative to other, known objects. Distance finding is used to find your linear distance to an object of known height. Neither of which you can or need to do in space.

That's fine for a linear situation where its: Target ---- You ---- Gate
In eve, there is up/down/left/right, so it's all vector addition. I can't do ASCII art, but for example: you could be at 0m 'height' relative to the stargate, 20km left relative to stargate centre, while your target could be a distance of 35km below-right of your ship (what is displayed on the overview). The tactical overview sort of lets you do some relative distance measuring, but it's far too limited to do what the OP is asking for.

I think its much easier to do a triangular path. Just hold shift and click two objects and the math figures out their distances relative to you, and also themselves. So you could possibly click two distant hostiles and figure out how far apart they are from eachother. Simple triangles, oh... and this is not basic math. In crazy moments when fast action is required, I don't want to be counting my fingers for this game.

I would like this feature, it's all well and good for those who can figure it out in their heads but I myself have a..problem.. with maths and i'm sure others do too.
