Ok, so I have read through a number of salvaging and hacking threads that cover success rates and item drop issues. My take on those threads is;
Item amount and type is completely random and is not enhanced by skills or modules/rigs.
Skills/modules/rigs give a higher rate of success to the activity, thereby making the process quicker. So running two or three salvagers on a wreck makes the salvaging faster, nothing more.
There are some wrecks that require higher level salvage skills in order to succeed and there are some containers that require a higher level Hacking skills in order to attempt a hack.
Am I wrong about the above and/or have I missed anything?
My two cents - it stinks that we have fancy gear and skills and all it does is make us work faster. There ought to be a way to make the item drops better too.

Well, a lot of us seemed to have experienced that drops was influenced by our skills. BUt a dev has denied that to be how its intended to work.
This leaves us with, as you so correctly point out, a pretty stupid system, where there, especially with the hack/arch skills, are no reason to train lvl 5 much less use the rigs. (I have the skills trained and invested a lot of good isk in rigs, so call me bummed. Exept of course the fact that my drops imporved a lot after I did that. But that have to be a strange change in luck...)

From my experience it seems that I still get random drop results. It seems as though I get the same amount that others do with similar skills, but sometimes its good and sometimes bad.
At salvage lvl4 and one rig I still get about 50% bs salvage failures. The bs' that do drop give good parts. It seems that more often then not the salvage does not produce parts, maybe two out of five.
I can get equal amounts and types of parts just ratting in a 0.5 system with lots of belts as I can in a lvl 4 mission (unless its blockade ).
I salvage a lot faster than I did before, but that's not what I used parts to make a rig for nor is it why I'm training salvage lvl 5.
Oh well, for now I'll train hacking and arch and get those skills to lvl 3.
