So, I finally have run enough missions to buy a Catalyst and chew up the lvl 1 missions. However, I keep checking agents for better quality availability (best I can find now is a quality 0).
Today I finally found two agents, still level 1 missions, but now they're quality 11 and 13! I get all set to go to one or the other when I realize that they're both in low-sec space (one is in 0.4 and the other in 0.2).
So, just how dangerous would it be for new player to operate around there (assuming a lot of my mission destinations would be in and around that system). Should I change my loadout to defend against pirates? Right now I'm just armor tanking (not really needed) and running 5 150 guns. I've got plenty of money to replace and re-outfit the Catalyst, if needed, but I don't want to have to do it over and over again, ofc.
Just hoping to learn somehow other than by being podded...

Edited by: DubanFP on 30/01/2007 00:03:12 click your character screen, go to standings. Right click and show info of the corporation that you're doing missions for. click the agents tab, and you can see a list of ALL of thier agents and locations. __________________________ Why babelfish is bad mmm k "which the night do not expect that it calls the primary education before becoming deformed inside" |

also on the destroyer, i can guarentee you will be ganked at a gate or station in a little destroyer. Not worth it in anything smaller then a battleship and even that's iffy. __________________________ Why babelfish is bad mmm k "which the night do not expect that it calls the primary education before becoming deformed inside" |

Running lvl 1's out of lowsec might not be a very good idea. The combination of the higher quality agent and lower security status do benefit reward/LP gain in various ways, but the overall payout of the missions is likely going to be enough to offset the additional danger you will be in.
However, that said it really will depend on the system. Check the position of the system. Set autopilot routes from various point-a's on one side to point-b's on the other. If the sytem isn't on a direct route, then it's unlikely to be gate-camped as often. Also consider the fact that you generally cannot be scanned down while running a mission, so you are only vulnerable when going between systems in the first place.
I would actually recommend going to the lowsec agent's location, but not in your destroyer if you could only just afford it. Given that you are clearly able to do so, running those higher quality/lowsec agent mission in an Incursus would likely be a better idea. If you do get popped, it won't cost you nearly as much, and you have a higher liklihood of surviving a gate camp in the first place.
However, in the long run it will benefit you tremendously to lose ships in lowsec. Why? Because the fastest way to learn how to live in lowsec is to lose ships in lowsec. I know it sucks losing ships to pirates, but once it happens a few times and you get over the moral outrage and ignominy of the event you will be much better off.
That's my opinion at any rate. Maybe it's too dangerous to take your destroyer because it represents a 'high' isk investment to you. But risk less, and it's likely going to be more than worth it.

Edited by: SIMONP1965 on 30/01/2007 03:33:42 ive run thru losec areas in a distroyer, lesson #1 DONT AUTOPILOT!!! when you come into a lowsec area your cloked, worp to next gate at 0 meaters, and be redy to jump and soon as you come out of worp, jump and your cloked again... so just do things fast... no hanging around long enough for them to lock on ya and you should be ok... but of course... theres no garentees... lol

Give it a go --- you haven't got a whole lot to lose TBH. If you're worried about losing your destroyer, perhaps go check the system out in a frigate.

Use warp to 0, never sit still.. you should be safe. Just never do it without the ISK to fund a backup ship, in case you have to go back to empire.

Tossing in my vote to shelve the destroyer if you are going to try out missioning in low sec. While the destroyer does have a role in PvP (it rocks against frigates and interceptors, making it a great complement to a battleship escort in a convoy), it's vulnerability to cruisers is going to get you popped pretty fast. L1 missions can be done quite well with a well fitted L3 combat frigate, and apart from being cheaper to replace and refit, that frigate will have a speed, alignment and signature advantage over the destroyer, making it more likely you can warp out when local suddenly shows other ships.
Once you get to the stage that you need to bring at least a cruiser into a mission, i'd advise to use extreme caution when missioning in low sec. Try to have some friends tag along or operate in an area of 0.0 that your corp/alliance has secured. Better rewards and safer! |

Lowsec mission running isn't dangerous - nobody is going to spend the money on probes to find your destroyer and kill it. If you choose a station/system with multiple agents you can generally avoid accepting missions in other systems.
Lowsec travel is dangerous though. Check the map for recent ship and pod kills before travelling.
http://eve.grismar.net/explorer/ is a great tool for finding agents that you can use, as is the map. ("My Agents") Train Social and Connections skills to get yourself better agents.

A lot of good advice posted here. I spend most of my life in 0.1/0.2 space these days and have done so for quite some time. It's not particularly dangerous as long as you keep your wits about you.
1) NEVER USE AUTOPILOT in low sec. Always use warp to zero when travelling through systems or warping to stations. Have the gate/station highlighted in the overview and as soon as you drop out of warp click that warp/dock button like mad :-)
2) ALWAYS CHECK THE MAP before you warp - use the "show ships destroyed in last hour" highlighting to give you an idea of the activity in systems on your route.
3) WATCH LOCAL CHAT to see what's happening. - Often people will let others know about gate camps and the like in next door systems. Also, people with poor sec status will show up in the list of bods in local chat. If there are loads with a red box and minus sign you can be sure there's something going on in the system somewhere.
4) NEVER ASSUME ANYONE IS FRIENDLY - If you're in a belt or whatever, if someone warps in, even if they seem to have a good sec status (not orange or flashing red), warp away to a safe spot or a station. Better to be safe than sorry.
5) DON'T FLY ANYTHING YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE - Cos sooner or later you will lose a ship. But then that can happen in any system...just more likely in low sec.
6) LEARN ABOUT ALIGNING FOR WARP - and other such useful tactics to bear in mind when on missions and ratting etc. Probably more for ships that don't orbit to attack or miners but and not always easy or possible, but it can save your life.
7) ENJOY! - It's great fun in lower sec systems...a lot less crowded overall. You can often find yourself as the only person in a system.
Finally, if you go through a gate and find yourself appearing in the midst of several red-flashers gate camping, you are not necessarily dead. In fact, the smaller the ship the better in that respect as they get to warp faster and hopefully you can make it to warp before they get a lock on you. Makes the heart beat fast though!

Vasiliyan is right. Just a couple of levels in Connections and you should have enough standing to just about go straight to level 2 missions.
