Could be a number of things:
1. Mining lasers have a range of 10 km max, if you're too far the laser won't turn on. After you lock the asteroid, right-click on that asteroid target icon and "approach" it.
2. Make sure your targetted asteroid is the "active" target by clicking on the icon that appears at the top of the screen once, THEN activate the laser.
With bigger ships you can target multiple asteroids, so basically you need to tell your lasers which of the roids they should mine; unfortunately it's possible that they coded it to NOT automatically pick one even if you only have one targetted. So you have to click on it once. An active target is indicated as active by circling arrows around it.
3. If your cargo hold is full, the laser will turn off, and any extra mineral will be lost. Time to dock to a station and drag your ore from the cargo to the hangar.

Same thing happended to mee too, also very very newbie here ;)
I asked around in chat and someone told me that i had to log out of the game, log back in and make sure i dont activate the minig laser before i locked into a asteroid.
So log of, log back in (the game) aproach a asteroid lock it and then activate the laser i think it will work.
Hope this newbie is helping a fellow newbie out ;)

If you activate teh mining laser before you target a roid simply left click onto the roid you want to mine, if your in range it will lock the roid and start mining it.
Other wise right click will reset it, then follow the steps posted above

I've noticed a lot of ppl in corp with this problem most are fresh in thier velators so fitting shouldnt be an issue some ppl in corp tested it in frigates and found thier lasers were turned off without any action from them could this be a new frigate bug methinks |

Lot of people in our newbie corp have been having this problem as well in past few days.
Relogging hasn't helped many. Docking and refitting has helped a few. Furthermore removing the newbie gun has helped even more. At least two cases were solved by repackaging/assembling.

I'm also new and I've seen this quite a bit. I find that picking another asteroid solves it. Annoying when I've moved close to Omber specifically.

I've also been having this problem. A couple times I was unable to turn my mining lasers on at all. A relog fixed it. My buddy has been having the same problem with his guns. He'll target an enemy, switch his guns on and viola'...they don't fire. Definitely a bug going on.
