I.e. 4 types passive resistance module with low shield resist percentage mounted at med-slot. This is need to apply Shield Compensations Skills, like Enegised Adaptive nano membrane II fitted to use Armor Compensations Skills. So, shield-tanked ships will be more comparable to armor-tanked ships. Now, without this type module, shield-tank ships kinda suxx vs. armor tanked ones.

the invul hardener needs a LOT of cap, a passive invul tank would be really something that would make shield tanking compareable to armor tanking, because of NOS everywhere

A shield tank regenerate even if nossed, an armor tank not, a shield tank is fast at regenerating, an armor tank not.
Noticed that there are differences, and not on favor to the armor tankers?
so don't whine and accept that some difference is in favor of the armor tanker.

Oh, that makes no sense at all. Why would shield tanking NEED the same mods as armor tanking? Then what's the difference?
I mean, I'd like to have an Armor Repairer with the cycle's of a Shield Booster and autocannons doing same per shot as blasters.
Good skilled Shield tankers could actually outtank a good skilled armor tanker, and even then, they're balanced quite good.

Edited by: Christopher Dalran on 30/01/2007 16:38:06 Armor tanked = long sustained tanking
Shield tank = Much greater damage mitigation ability but over a shorter period of time.
Each is superior in different situations, making each the same would remove some of the flavor from the game.
Sounds to me like you want to armor tank but like flying caldari ships.

The problem I have is that armor tankers have all those nifty shields to hide behind until they need to activate their repper.
Armor tankers get a free 50% before you start hitting their actual tank, not very fair IMO.

Shield restore over time, but a) Shields has lower basic resistance compare to armor b) Shield Boosters has worst restoration HP per Cap compare to Armor Repairers c) Pilot of Armor-tank ships can spend one low slot to EANM II and learn skills Armor Compensations, giving him additions great resistance (+53% percent resist every type), while Shield-tank pilot cannot compete, unless mount hi-end Officer Invul over 1.5 Billion ISK worth (let's compare price to EANM II).
Currently, many ships, which designed to be Shield Tanked, are used as Armor Tanked just because lack of such analog of EANM II for shield tank ships.

And shield tankers have all that nice armor to protect them while warping away, while armor tankers are losing structure.

Armor-tankers able to heal them self completely, shield-tankers unable to heal armor.
And back to topic. I do not see, that introducing low resistance to all 4 type of damage to shield passive module will give big advatange shield tankers over armor tankers. But shield & armor tank will be comparable - true. And Shield Compenastions skills will not be a trash.

WTB: armor boost amp. WTB: passive armor tank.
Shield tanking is just fine. All the points brought up in this thread are just lame.

a Shield are only really vulnerable to Amarr lasers. Maybe it's time to consider a different setup then 4 hardeners . b Armor repairs take a few secs to make their cycle, shield boosters ftw IMO. Shield Boosters can boost a whole lot better than armor repairers where shield boosters get a massive bonus with the SBA's. c That's not true, do your maths. EANM II (which takes a while to train for) has base 20% resists, with every compensation skill lvl you get 5% of that 20% bonus. So 4 armor comp skills at lvl 1 is a 21% boost to all dmg types, all 4 skills to lvl 4 is an overall bonus of 24%. Now that Estamel's Invulnerability Field is some nice stuff, but now I can go complain we've only 30,xxx% EANM's? Now they're passive though so they'll end up being 37.5% vs 50%... Besides that, a lot of people skip the armor comp skills at lvl 5 since they take 9~10 days per skill, and wasting 40 days to get an over all 1~2% bonus isn't worth it (or if you're using Chelm's you get better bonuses, but now it's quite stupid to use Chelm's on every ship you fly).

This means armor tankers will get active invulnerability like modules like shield taners have then aswell. In addition then armor tanker should get a armor tank boost amplifier aswell. And if we are busy compareing them armor should then have an repairing cycle like shields have.
The reason why they are different is understandable, otherwise one would be able to overpower the other. In that sense shield actually IS alot better tankable then armor is (shorter repair cycles, extra boost from naturall repair rate and because EM = 0% they bonus can be made alot higher with active invulnerability hardeners.
I have a poor skilled caldari shield tanking char which allready outtanks my maxed armor tanking character! Compare ... 2 - 3 years of play & training against a 8 month old character!

Yes and alot less time to die, when you notice your armor doesnt hold it may allready be to late when your being pounded by a few cruisers and battleships. If you see your shield tank fail you have your armor to warp out so it will safe u in alot of occasions.
Originally by: Vurn b) Shield Boosters has worst restoration HP per Cap compare to Armor Repairers
c) Pilot of Armor-tank ships ...
This is not true, actually (cheap) shield boosters can repair more then the corpum a type medium armor repairer not even given the fact you can increase a shield boosters repair with shield boost amplifiers.
as of c absolutely true, however i can make pretty mean shield tanks that are passive and can easely be arround the levels of an passive armor tank (given the fact the character i done it on is only 8 months compared to a character who is in game for over 2 years).
All in all the balance is there, though if you played both roles you can see the balance favouring towards shield tanks really (if not warp jammed, but then shield or armor you would die anyway jus as shield tanker you would have more time tacking the tacklers ).
