I have been playing this near perfect game we all love for a while now and I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about the game mechanics, processes and opportunities. However I have been reading the various topics and conversations contained in this forum and have come to the understanding that I know nothing at all. I have read threads from many well educated and intelligent people and I have to say I feel completely out of my depth. Unfortunately being a member of an player corp is not really an option due to my intermittent online times so I have just plodded along at my own pace. I just want to say that this game is complicated, perplexing and at times down right frustrating but I love it.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Just make friends along the way no need to join a corp, see someone doing something you also enjoy? Randomly convo them. Some convos are meh, some convos cultivate friendship. Just got killed? Convo the guy that killed you. He may be a ****, he may be a nice guy but either way, most people are willing to tell you why you died at the very least, he may even give you some pointers on how to not have that happen again. Most of the people I consider friends have been made by killing or being killed by one another.

Yes, oddly this happens.

This heartening news to someone who has trouble meeting people ingame. On the other hand, i've been online most days since 2009 and i've found that it's hard to keep a large store of enemies. Eventually you'll fly with people from everywhere, both ingame and so-called "real life". Also, the game has more people itching to tell you stuff than it has people who know stuff, this adds a level of complexity requiring patience and research. Allow advice to direct your enquiry, never take it as gospel.

I still have a lot to learn about this game after all these years. There are some aspects to the game that I've purposefully kept myself in the dark about as I wasn't interested at the time, so I've had a lot of fun learning about them later on. This game is so very deep, I doubt I'll ever get to the bottom of it.
Also, as the most handsome man in highsec said above, don't be afraid to put yourself out there; talk to people, and learn from them. However, I'm sure there are some laid-back corps out there who'd be happy to have you, regardless of how much time you actually have to play.

I'm going on 3 years in game and still bone ignorant of most of what's going on around me. I read the forums and half the time it's more like Klingon than any language I know, that's probably due to all the abbreviations that the knowledgeable folks use. I've barely scratched the surface of what's available out there but I'm cool with it as there is a certain amount of confidence that me and the game will be here for another 3 years, if not more. About the only thing I dislike about EOL is fitting out a new ship type, everything coming together only to discover that the one module I simply must have requires a level 5 skill set which is going to take another 9 days. Just because I understand that long skill queues eventually benefit the veteran doesn't make me like them.
Designated Rep for 7 characters, two corps and one doofus multi-boxer.
Pathetic at PvP but handy with a spreadsheet; lost a bunch of ships but not one spreadsheet.
Three kills amongst 7 characters; one of them by accident. (Sorry about that)

Refreshingly honest. My suggestion to the OP is to view EVE like you do a neighborhood you must moved to; it's perplexing and confusing...then one day, you know every crack in every sidewalk and don't even realize when it all came to you.

I run a corp
I made 90+ videos on eve, newbie guides n such, anomolies etc
EvE does not need corps, infact empire would be alot better if corps didnt exist
Don't forget to spread word about the EvE Online New Player Guide, 90+ videos and counting, let's get more and more players into this amazing game!

There are a number of excellent player corps that don't require you show up on a regular basis. I wouldn't write off the possibility so quickly.

I am part of a corp that is small but does not require anymore time than you can commit even if it means being gone for months at a time :) and have been playing eve since 2004 so been about a few years been in a few wars including the first great northern war and lived in 0.0 in wormholes etc and still enjoy the game. No this is not my first char wich i sold many years ago due to me leaving the game for a few years but then made new chars and have played them since :) |

Realizing that there's so much to learn about this game is one of the things that makes it so great! I'd highly recommend checking out different corporations as they all have different activity requirements, especially the newbro friendly ones. Eve University, for example, only requires you to login once every 30 days I believe. Others might not even have an activity requirement, or let you instantly rejoin (because they have no requirements to join). Talk to recruiters, ask questions, and you might be pleased with what you find.

Yes i know i haven't asked a question.
There is always a corp for all type of game play. Just ask the question upfront about your availability. I know people that play the game 23/7 and I know other that only play few hours a week.
That's is the beauty of the game. This game is all about risk/rewards, opportunities, and SPACESHIPS !!!
Have fun and fly reckless !

There are a lot of player corps that have intermittent players. In my own, we have people who don't play for months at a time sometimes. A few days here and there isn't an issue unless you're joining some leet PvP corp or something. |

I do not consider Eve to be a social arena where I need to have friends to hold my hand as I struggle with the complexities of the game. The challenge of being a solo player is to regenerate one's interest by peeling each onion-like layer of New Eden to see if that layer piques one's interest. Then time can be spent in quiet enjoyment of this new trail of adventure and accomplishment.
I've had other players scoff at the solo game and arrogantly state "MMORPG" means 'multiplayer', inferring I am not part of what the game is meant to be. I consider them as part of the scenery and backdrop I play in, nothing more or less.
There is a constant sub-routine running in my brain planning, examining recent past game events, considering alternative routes of action, weighing tactics, and anticipating the next set of moves. It is an infinite puzzle I am figuring out piece by piece, one that makes demands on my intellect and forces me to focus and concentrate for long periods of time.
The darkness of Eve evokes a sense of caution and the pitting of my wits and cunning against both the game developers and other players. It is up to me, and only me to keep this experience exhilarating and ever evolving.
In that vein, do not consider solo play to be a handicap, consider it to be an intricate challenge to your inner self. |
