ú1200 should buy you quite a beast. Although the golden question of the day: Vista or not to Vista? -----------------------------------------------

Not to Vista.
For CPU, get a Core 2 Duo. For RAM, get at least 2GB of good stuff. For a graphics card, an 8800 will do you some good. For hard drives, they're so cheap nowadays you can get 2x250GB drives in RAID 0 for under 150 dollars (USD!)

Put the ú1200 in a freeform contract to me in Jita and I'll eve-mail you when the PC is built. Honest.

I just built a very nice, 2 EVE accounts smooth as silk, PC for ú596. If I'd had double the money I think I would have been foaming at the mouth with glee. __________________________________

the vista question is a pain, all the dmr stuff makes we not want to get it
and the 8800......its a beast, but i can save money and get 2 x 7900gd sli for 150 cheaper and i figure i can upgrade to a dx 10 card when they become standars and cheaper :P
anyone know any good sites where you can mess about with setups etc ? bit like meshcomputers.com

I hadn't read that, and I'm glad you linked to it. After the rather depressing tone of most of the article, I found this section particularly amusing:
Quote: Note H: I see some impressive class-action suits to follow if this revocation mechanism (ôbrickingö) is ever applied. Perhaps Microsoft or the content providers will buy everyone who owns a device that inadvertently leaks content and is then disabled by the revocation process replacement hardware for their system, although that will in turn trigger the WGA time-bomb.
For anyone who's read ôGuns of Augustö, the situation seems a bit like pre-WWI Europe with people sitting on step 1 of enormously complex battle plans that can't be backed out of once they're triggered, no matter how obvious it is that going ahead with them is a bad idea. Driver revocation is a lose/lose situation for Microsoft, they're in for some serious pain whether they do or they don't. Their lawyers must have been asleep when they let themselves get painted into this particular corner ù the first time some ôfeatureö of Vista's content protection inadvertently takes out a hospital, foreign government department, air traffic control system, or whatever, they've guaranteed themselves a front-row seat in court proceedings for the rest of their natural lives.
(Several people have suggested that this was deliberate in order for the lawyers to guarantee themselves lifetime employment, but this seems highly unlikely. Firstly, lawyers have an obligation to protect their clients, so deliberately getting a client into trouble in order to generate more work would be a severely career-limiting move. Secondly, they're corporate in- house counsel rather than independent counsel, so they'll get paid anyway. Making more work for themselves would not be a big priority for them).

Edited by: Epoch on 31/01/2007 00:49:23 Edited by: Epoch on 31/01/2007 00:47:20 8XXX series would be a huge mistake until vista is released (today!) and driver/compatibility problems are ironed out. besides, its just a matter of time before a 8600gt is released. supposedly already on the drawing boards. . once/if it is released, it will most likely outperform the 7900gt.
whatever you decide to do... throw 1 or 2 150gb Western Digital Raptors in the mix.

1200? That'll get a nice PC for sure.
You'd most definately want a PC geared to handle a 8xxx card once they become standard, so that means a beefy mobo/cpu/PSU combo (the 8800 is a wattage eater).
I've stuck with Asus as premiere in quality, and whenever I did get a DOA, it was quickly replaced within the 10 mins I sat waiting at their offices (hate sending stuff, besides, the office isnt that far from me, and I get to see other mobo's made by them).
A Core2Duo is a standard here, though locally where I live, AMD is king (due to the fact that its cheaper to replace from all the stocks).
7900 Nvidia card should be more enough till there are cheaper (and easier-to-live-with) 8xxx cards and DX10 becomes standard.
2GB ram. The good stuff. Asus boards do get picky with ram, so check up on their QVL lists depending on mobo model (on their website)
HDD are cheap, you can get, as suggestion, a pair of HDD's and run them in RAID 0.
PSU will be a problem, since the 8800 is a power guzzler, so think ahead.

Has anyone here ever ordered from pcspecialist.co.uk? I ask as I'm in pretty much exactly the same situation as the OP, and they seem to have some good deals. Just wondering about reliability etc.

I have pretty much decided not to buy from them, after looking around the net and asking on here about pcspecialist tbh. Going to buy my new rig from www.evesham.com. bought my last 2 PC's with them so im gonna stick with it.
