I was thinking that a skill or set of skills that would allow you to 'reverse engineer' an existing item or exploration artifact to result in a BPO would be kinda cool and has precedents in the alternate reality we call real-life. Of course, it would have to be hard and expensive to do -- the process might need to effectively destroy many versions of the item that it is working on and may even take iterations of prototype building cycles to refine the end result. It might be an interesting way to 'seed' new BPOs rather than a lottery.

The same effective procedure is already in game called Invention.
There are a lot of complaints of how it actually works and the sucess rate, but it does have an effect.

Reverse Engineering was the origional name for the comcept that somehow morphed and transmografied into Invention.

Isn't there a fundamental difference between Reverse Engineering and Invention?
We know how Invention works, user existing blueprints to improve on them.
Reverse Engineering is where you take an existing item (a Cerberus for example) and rip many of these apart in order to create a blueprint from it.
Reverse Engineering could be useful, however I think that Invention has much more scope within Eve as it will eventually allow for the inventing of T3 items, while RE would be limited to what we have available just now.

Invention was choosen over Reverse Engeneering to accomodate for the system beeing used for T3, i'm sure.
I dont think we will ever see T3 BPO's. Only BPC's created through invention.
