I'm a newb and I can't figure out exactly how to read the descriptions of some of the items, so I figure I'd better ask. The description of the Ballistic Control System I says
rate of fire bonus 0,925 % missile damage bonus -7 % Penalty: Using more than one type of this module or similar modules that affect the same attribute on the ship will be penalized.
What does "damage bonus -7 %" mean? Do I get the damage increased by 7% or decreased as the minus suggests? And if its decreased what's the real use of this item - it increases rof by 7.75% and decreases damage by 7%, yielding 0.75% dps increase for missiles. Is it intended for non-missile weapons only? Or am I reading it wrong? Also, what does the "Penalty: Using more than..." part mean? That more than one such units don't stack or stack partially? Or that there's some other penalty to be had if I try to fit more than one? I'd be much obliged if someone explained the description to me.

Edited by: Jarjar on 31/01/2007 14:22:54 Huh? Mine says Rate of fire bonus 7.5% Missile damage bonus 7% Pretty straightforward.
Oh, and the penalty. You get diminishing returns, so using more than 3 such modules is usually no good, more than 4 is pretty much never good.

its simple.. you fire faster and your missiles hit harder (7% harder in your case)

Discriptions on modules aren't always in the same words, lack of consistency in naming stuff. Anyway, you get a RoF bonus and a damage bonus. Rate of fire is reduced, so you fire more often and damage is increased. Stacking penalty means that two of those BCU don't give 2 times 7% damage increase but a bit less. This reduction increases with the number of BCUs you use, generally speaking more than 3 is useless.

Edited by: d026 on 31/01/2007 14:27:10 if you fit a bcu with 7% rof 7% dmg it calculates as following:
without bcu:
rof: 10 sec dmg: 100 kin
with bcu:
rof: 9.3 dmg: 107
with 2 bcus:
rof: 8.73 dmg: 113.5097

Thanks a lot for the replies. I see now that part of my confusion comes from the fact that I read the description from the site database, which I quoted in the first post. In-game attributes however state the bonuses with positive numbers, which pretty much explains that part of my question. And does anyone have a link of a site with maths on stacking penalties and general game formulas?

Edited by: Neuromandis on 31/01/2007 17:59:59 Nevermind the formulas, just keep the basic numbers in your mind...
1st: 100% effective 2nd: ~86% effective 3rd: ~55% effective 4th: ~~~30% effective 5th: ~~~~~15% effective (the~~~ means I am not sure exactly, 86 might be 85 or 84, 55 might be 54 or 56, and so on)
ALSO IMPORTANT: the penalties ALWAYS go from stronger to weaker, that means the strongest module will be the fully effective one and so on, regardless of what was fitted first et.c. For example, if you use a BCU I (7,0% and 7.5%) and 2 BCU tech 2 (10.5 and 11 bonus), they go like this:
BCU II: 100% effective (10.5% and 11%) BCU II: 86% effective (9.3% and 9.46%) BCU I: 55% effective (4.125% and 3.85%)
THAT IS REGARDLESS of what was fitted first,
Also, it is nopt the modules that stack, but the attributes (in that case rate of fire and damage). Even if the modules are completely different or, for example, one is a rig and another is a module yopu will still get stacking penalty for the attribyute. For example, if you fit a rig that gives 15% damage and a BCU, the rig will be fully effective, and ONLY THE DAMAGE aspect of the BCU will be penalized with 86%, while the rate of fire of the BCU will give its full bonus.
Clear enough?

Also a good tip: download QuickFit (sticky at top of this forum).
It takes some getting used to, but once you are comfortable with the tool it can really help show what effect each added module has on your fit (not just damage with the BCS, but resists as you add hardeners, shield/cap regen with extenders and boosters, etc.). Plus you can play "what-if" with your skills too and see how that affects e.g. your DPS against a particular kind of NPC.
