I just bought and kitted out a nanocane with 6 220 vulcans, 2 hvy missile launchers, mwd, webber, scram, 2 x gryo II, 2 x inertial stabs, 2 x nanofibers.
I go find a rat cruiser and orbit it at 2500km but my autocannons (optimal 3km) barely scratch it. I have 2 mil SP in gunnery. Is that just the way it is with a nanocane or am I doing something wrong?

you orbit at 2500km ? interesting... ;)
u prolly are too fast. try to slow your boat down and u will see if u hit better. if not, then u r doing something wrong. just dont ask me what ;)

Whoops, yes 2500m rather. I turned off the mwd and pummeled the rat. But i thought the whole idea was I fly fast all the time and the bad guy couldn't track/hit me effectively?

You do that outside of 10k range. You fly fast, don't get webbed, and you can track well enough at around 12k.
Nanocanes also are rather bleh v NPCs.
Oh, and you're using autocannons. Ignore your optimal. You fight in falloff.

You can always replace a dmg mod with a tracking enhancer, and also could possibly go with 180's instead of the 220's. There is a theory that even though smaller guns have a bit lower dps, you hit more, ultimately increasing your dps over time due to not missing. Also, I dont miss often in my cane w/ 220's and it hauls ass, check your motion prediction skill, it might need to be trained up to a higher level increasing your natural tracking.

Yeah, Nanocane's & nanoships in general are used in PvP. You orbit outside web range and shoot barrage ammo.

Sound's like your just to close and fast and if your killing rat's you should use 650/720's and a armor tank.
Speed tanks are more PVP than PVE. !

I think everyone has it right, you are going too fast for your distance. You can change your overview settings to show angular velocity. Compare that with your tracking speed.
The only thing I'd add is, yes, don't speed tank small rats. But if you are going against triple battleship spawns, I find it easier to speed tank them, atleast with the Cyclone.

well, exactly the same thing would go thru the rats head if it could think about it ;) try tracking computers... or do like everyone said... armor tank ;)

Thanks for setting me straight on this.

Very useful tip. Does this hold true for blasters and pulses? Should rails, arty, beams be used at optimals?

Its an auto cannon thing but works well with Arty as well all other weapons should be used in there op range.

Minmatar weapons have a better falloff. You can effectively outrange your opponent since your optimal + falloff exceeds theirs.
Mind you, there is always a chance to hit, regardless of range. There is no absolute max range. But at optimal + 2x falloff you have a 96% penalty to hit. In other words, after you figure your chance to hit based on tracking and signature radius, you only get 4% of that.

Well you're obviously not fitting enough nanos. Nanos make you impossible to kill and let your ship kill like 500 enemies at once.
