I've been in the US Navy for several years now, and let me tell you from personal experience that when those guns go off on surface ships your entire insides shake. BOOM! is an understatement.
I'll never forget the first time I was on an Adams class guided missile destroyer (USS Benjamin Stoddart DDG22). We were conducting 5"/50cal gun firing excercises off the coast of Hawaii. My boat had two of these puppies, and I wanted to take a peek to see one go off. I was an E-nothing, and the loudest thing I had ever heard was a shotgun.
The first couple of rounds occurred while I was inside the skin of the ship. That little boat shook pretty good when one of those 5" shells were launched. I don't recall exactly, but the 5" shell weighs about 40-50lbs.
Anyway, I went to the forwardmost port side water tight door which was hinged on the right, so when it swung out, I had to step out onto the weather deck and peek around. No sooner than I got my face around the door, BOOM! The force from the shock slammed the door into my chest and knocked me into the blade of the door. Fortunately, I had my face all the way around the door so I didn't get my grill smashed in.
In anycase, THAT was the loudest thing I ever heard. And then, a few weeks later, we did some excersises with the USS Missouri, and that easily topped our little, itty, bitty gun. Here's a shot of 9x 16" guns going off on the Missouri. They look like they are all going off at the same time, but infact they are fired in succession, at very close intervals. I believe there are structural reasons for this.
ANYWAY, please for the love of God, make my guns go BOOM! when they fire. The pathetic "ka-chunk" is hardly fitting of such large weapons. My 720mm guns are roughly 28" in diameter. I want BOOM! and I want a nice billowy flame please. Reference the picture in the link if you need too CCP.

I want lasers that are worth using to sound nice too.
As it is, medium-heavy beams go 'shrrrr***kk'... medium-light ones go CLANKACLANKACLANKA...
I think the only true laser sound effect is medium-light pulse, which go 'Pew!'

Yes, indeed, and I'm curious, just how DOES a super heated beam of plasma go "CLANKACLANKACLANKA"?
"Pew" is good, it's what lasers do. Everbody knows that. Some lasers should have louder and longer pews, but "pew" nonetheless.
If lasers go pew! and missiles go BLAM! then I certainly want my guns to go BOOM! ----- Mr Xofar's EVE Website Miner Timer Thread |

Its not a very good pew. And Megapulse lasers sound like my old spacegun toy I had as a kid. SsssshhhhhhhhKOW!
And missiles don't really go Blam... Its more of a... A... A 'foom'. In all lower caps.
Give us better sound effects, but not before you fix the sound engine so the game doesn't lock up upon getting hit with 50 fooms at once!
EDIT: Okay, Light missiles have a nice boom to them, but I get hit more often with heavies, cruise and torpedoes. None of which are very impressive at all.
And the explosion graphic for torpedoes is way too big. I mean, seriously. Its -massive-. Can we trim that too? >.> ---------- Flying Amarr and only Amarr. Not a ***** since 2006. |

I think weapons activation and impact in general should be more awesome. If we wish hard enough, maybe that sort of touch-up will be included in the graphics upgrade. Bigger guns, too. The Missouri's 30% weapon above the waterline, but you're got to zoom way the eff in to see jumbo cannons on a Tempest. What's up with that.

ok.
From "The Jovian Wetgrave", a CCP short story.;
After a while Anu's voice came back: "You're doing very well. Now we are going to activate the audio synthesizers." "Audio synthesizers? What do you mean?" Pirkotan thought. "As you know there is no sound in space, but when we were developing the capsules we found that people wanted to use as many of their senses as possible, thus we added the sound. By letting a computer create three dimensional sound we also add to the awareness you have while in battles, for instance." Several seconds later Pirkotan could hear the audio synthesizers kick in; he could hear the low humming noise of the propulsion system and the sudden hissing sound of course-correctional thrusters. Anu came back on: "Now we'll test the audio system." Suddenly a missile was launched from one of the missile bays. It flew majestically out from the ship and disappeared to the right of Pirkotan's vision. Pirkotan turned the camera and watched it fly away from the ship. Then a stab of green and yellow light came from the Jovian vessel, accompanied by a loud *****ling noise. The weapon burst hit the missile and it exploded. Pirkotan heard the explosion clearly and when he turned the camera to the Jovian vessel he could still hear the explosion's residue in the background.
I would enjoy beefier graphics / sounds so long as they don't lag, which inexplicably, they do currently. The sounds especially.
But yes, Battlestar Galactica style uberTurrets would rock the casbah. I am hoping for them with the graphics overhaul to come. With less lag.

Maybe not as in the picture you linked to, but a little more 'boomy', yeah. Definately. |

And remember, the Missouri's shooting 16" guns in that picture, which is around 406mm, according to my calculation. A Mealstrom should light up the night.

When guns on a ship go BOOM, the Earth shakes! Or it would if the thing wasn't in the ocean...
Oh yeah, Minmatar 4tw.. Bigger, LOUDER guns!
Ah crap, I gotta go!

BOOM please.
For those of you who can do it ... send your eve output through an EQ and boost the low end, flaten out the middle and the highs.
then run it through compressor with an almost non-existant noise gate. Finally push that through a reverb tank.
It sounds bigger, even though medium hybrids are still more beefy than large hybrids.

Edited by: Arcalane Celso on 16/02/2007 02:33:32 And here's me, always wondering how railguns/coilguns are supposed to make a firing sound.
But yeah, some beefier firing sounds would be nice. I'm quite fond of the 425mm Med AC's loud repetitive "dakkadakkadakka" sound but in comparison, the 720mm Arty is practically silent. And then you've got the hefty explosions of Thunderbolts smacking someone up at 20km away, louder than your artillery.
Still, I love the explosion sounds when ships get popped. They sound like fireworks. ~~ I'm in ur belts minin' ur roids. |

Railguns should sound like a loud electrical arc coupled with a metal superheating and rapidly turning into expanding gas from the electrical current vaporizing the slug partially into plasma.
I have to say though, Heavy Neutron Blasters have quite an appropriate sound effect - it's a nice heavy sound that makes you think "jesus, that's a huge plasma cannon".

Humm... If you have a little look at i.e. Battlestar Galactica. It's the most realistic Sci-Fi out there - Ships have little auxillary cold-gas angines and one main engine that just goes straight one direction - and you move on in one direction if you don't hit something. Or something hits you, for that matter...
Well, there you see that the guns indeed make some noise, even tho there is no air. It's simply because metal very much leads sound. But all that the metal picks up in sound is a rather lumpish "thump" instead of a "boom" if you fire one of these board guns. Now, imagine you had thesevacuum sound effects in Eve: First, make the guns fire more often... for example have them fire salvas intead of single shots. "thump-thump-thump-thump-thump" sounds better than "thump-*5 minutes break*-thump"... Well, for rockets I have no idea how they should sound, never fired one in vacuum... And the Laser? Well, I guess that some kind of humming sound would best represent that one, in different tunes maybe. And it shouldn't be a single shot that's pver after a millisecond but a little bit longer in duration - after all, lasers need some time to cut their way through whatever is in their way...
Okay, my opinion... Anyone else? --- The future begins now - in EVE we live it, in real life we create it!
