Hello. My name is Tiffany. I am from Australia.
I just started playing this video game (my first one ever!) and have been finding it very hard to understand. Someone told me I should put a post on here and introduce myself so here I am lol. Introducing myself. Hopefully there are some people out there that read this and play this as well that might be able to show me a few things or explain how everything works and what I need to do to get an understanding of it all.
I didn't think it would be so hard. One person in the game just messaged me after I asked a question and said that it wasn't a girls game and to go and play the Sims instead so I kind of want to make sure I get this now.

Tiff. Hello Tiffany, I am Ace, I am also from Australia, glad to see in New Eden, and EVE was my first game too, so don't worry, I understand what your going through, was the same for me when I joined 8 months ago, tell you what, I will be online tonight around 8PM till about 3 hours after DT, so for about 6 hours tonight, and if you want, you can ask anything and everything, if you can, download TeamSpeak 3, and tonight I will give you the info for Spectre Fleet's comm's, and I can talk you through anything and everything PvP or PvE, and all the basic mechanics, add me in game and make sure you tick Watch List, it will send you a notification when I am online. Till then fly safe and hope to talk to you soon! (And get you in one my fleets and kill peoples!) P.S. If you want we can go gank the guy who messaged you! :D
Hi Ace,
I didn't think anyone would reply lol.
I'm happy to meet someone that is from Australia too! I am Queensland time but I will get into the game when I finish work.
I will need to find out what DT, Team speak, Spectre, pvp, pve all mean. Oh and Gank. So I will get back to you once I have googled all of that :)
I am not sure how to add people in the game yet or where my watch list is so I will work on that one too. |

Okay... serious response now.
Welcome to EVE Tiffany Hope. If you have any questions about the game, you can ask them in this section of the forum without having to deal with [too much] trolling.
As for the "this is a boy's game" comment... ignore it. In EVE you will deal with a lot of stuff like this. Not sexist comments per se... but a lot of "shitstirring." Thick skin is kind of a requirement as a lot of people like to provoke others or will rush to judgement.
And now I realize that I may have just bitten some sneaky trollbait.
Oh well... gotta give people the be efit ofthe doubt in this forum section.
Hello,
I didn't really understand all the voice bits but trolling is making fun of people? Is that something that happens a lot?
Thank you though. I will just have to be careful who I talk to I guess lol. |

Team speak is an audio chat app for groups. It is used in MMOs alot for coordinating group efforts. Like fleet ops in this game or raids in other games or battlefields etc... anything where groups of people need to operate and have "comms" while playing.
Spectre fleet is an NPSI (Not Purple Shoot It ) group that does public roams and shoots anyone not in fleet.
Gank just means you are going to go blow up the guy that said that to you regardless of what concord thinks about the interaction.
Hello, ok so I need to know this game like you do! lol
I don't think I can use Team speak then because I don't have a phone that uses apps?
Spectre people are the bad guys in the game then?
Ok I understand Gank now but I don't know his name any more and I would feel bad if we killed his ship though. From what I have read it takes lots to get good ships and stuff and I will just ignore those people so it's ok :)

Plus, if we were the bad guys, why would I be happy and willing to help newer players? Even if they never join a Spectre Fleet, I enjoy making friends, it is great when you log in and people are already saying hello and stuff :)
Yeah as others said Ts3 is for your computer, it is a program, it is free, and all you need is a computer to use it, it is a great program, I will talk you through some other ones you will need, like PyFa, EFT, things that will help you in the long run.
Ok so it is like a conference call on the computer? So many acronyms to learn. This may take me a while to get my head around :(
I didn't grasp all of that but if you aren't the bad guys then that means I don't have to "gank" you? :)
At the moment I am enjoying getting in to the game and nobody has blown my ship up when I am away! lol |

Memphis Baas wrote:Voice communications (voice comms) are used because in the heat of battle you can't take the time to type instructions to your fleet buddies. The game has voice comm capabilities, but players prefer to use third party programs (Ventrillo, TeamSpeak, or Mumble), because if the game crashes the voice comms won't and they can still organize everyone to log back in and continue the fight. Here is a video that shows voice-comms in action. But voice comms are for later; as a newbie learning the game you can certainly do ok without voice. As a warning, this game is about combat between players, and people get competitive to the point where they'll start throwing insults just to get you to falter or to dissuade you from killing them. It's not always friendly, and if they detect that you are new they may try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge about the game. The game allows "bad" activities such as theft, scamming, espionage, piracy, etc.; if you want to be a bad guy you can, in this game. As a result, people will be slow to trust you, and you shouldn't trust anyone you don't know, and if a deal appears too good to be true, then it's probably a scam. Oh I didn't know it was like that. So there are police on here as well in case people try that? I'm not very good at computers and stuff so is this not something I should be doing? |

So if you were not who you say you are and just pretending to be what you claim to be just to watch people react to the lie then you would be a troll. Even at that you would not be an angry or disruptive one so it could be worse.
But again you are not bothering anyone here by asking questions that you legitimately would like answers for.

It's just an EVE thing, you will start seeing it after a bit, don't worry about it, people thought I was a troll when I first started, it happens to a lot of people, if you know to much about the game (I read up for months before I started, so I new a bit for a newbie), people who don't know anything at all, just takes time, you will do fine, just focus on learning the game, and having fun, and don't listen to the negative, and you will be fine :) Oh, reminds me, are you NT side of QLD? One of the goals of this game is to bring back a sense of danger, a frontier "lawless west" kind of atmosphere, where the only law is the one you made. Because of that, many things that would be disallowed on other games, and invoke instant bans and Game Master intervention. Here, CCP (the company that makes Eve) is pretty hands off. There is a very short list of things that are not ok. Basically, a newbie is supposed to be safe from scams, baiting, and other techniques to force pvp while in newbie systems, and the tutorial systems. Once you leave those systems you become fair game. NQ&A is also supposed to be a safe haven from trolling and harassment. If you posted this in General Discussions, you would have gotten helpful replies, and a lot of trolling and accusations of trolling. All other forums are considered part of the game, so anything that is ok in Local is ok in GD.
Since this is your first MMO, don't assume a player's true sex is the same as their avatar. The very great majority of player in eve are male.
There is a WGOE (women gamers of eve) channel where you can go to talk with other ladies if you start feeling stifled by testosterone.
Eve is very difficult to learn. But it is very rewarding. The time you invest in learning anything is never wasted. It is very deep and detailed. I've been playing since 2007 and I'm still learning stuff on a nearly daily basis.
Most of all, the community is very helpful if you demonstrate a willingness to learn, and an empowered attitude. We like shooting people, but the community is hard on anyone acting like a victim. Every time someone blows you up or successfully scams you, there is always something you could have done to prevent it, or even come out ahead. So if your attitude when you get blown up or otherwise beat by another player is, "I screwed up, what did I do wrong, and what can I do to fix it."
If you take that attitude to heart, you will go far in this game, and be welcome in any fleet. Hello and thank you. I think I will try and find that place. I am not quite sure though, is that in MMO or Eve? So far everyone on here has been very nice and helpful. Im just sorry I don't understand it all yet but I will learn.
The first thing I want to learn is how to change the colour of my space ship lol. :) |

probably. lol. Ok, to edit a post, you can go back to it, on page one, there is an "Edit" button next to the quote. Click that, then backspace through whatever you don't want to say. As a forum courtesy, it is nice to put an "edit note" at the bottom, especially after you have already been replied to. This helps new readers who might be confused when followup posts refer to something that you said, that they didn't see in your post. This is why, usually you don't want to edit a post someone replied to. Also, editing your post doesn't edit the reply quote in someone else's post. Example edit note: edit - grammar and math fixes. Anything you say online stays there forever. So someone can shift through your lifetime of posts and usually build a pretty accurate profile. Of course linking character names, and forum nicknames shouldn't be possible. But I was rudely surprised by someone I knew and hadn't spoken to in 20 years when he tracked me down to a public forum. One which I never used my name or private info. I cant see my address anywhere :( I don't know what to delete :( |

I've read every post on this thread I do not recall you having posted your address. You did mention the town or at least get people familiar with the area a reference withing several miles of where you live but I think he was using a minor bit of artistic license in there. I believe a more accurate statement would have been that you have no problems giving the details about the general area in which you live but you were stingy with details on why you played the game. I don't think that you've gone too far in giving details. I just think someone here was trying to help you remain cautious and not get too much more specific. Can I delete what I put down?
So when I reply to what people say everyone else on here can see it too?

I've never used them but there is a section in the market for them and I think you can preview them in ship fitting and maybe even in the show info screen. I'm not sure as I don't use skins. I noticed you ask this question before and was hoping someone who knew more than me would chime in. If you can't figure it out let me know and I'll jump in a chat with you and help you figure it out. Well, there is no ability to chose your own colors, but you can choose predesigned skins, most ships have at least two to choose from, but it costs real money, or a lot of isk to buy the skins. Amarr have the shiniest happiest ships. At least on the outside, the slaves I haul around never seemed that enthusiastic, maybe I need to whip them more. I'm not sure what you mean. Do you really get slaves in this game? That's really not nice :(

Tiff. Howdy, from another Australian. There's no such thing as a "girl's game" or a "mens' game". Two of the more ruthless pirates I know in EVE are women IRL. This game *is* generally aimed at people that are willing to do independent research into complex mechanics, and aggressively optimize to the point of bending the rules. If you are interested in the dark side of EVE - worming your way into people's trust then inserting a knife into their backs; joining corporations to fleece members; piracy; scamming - let me know via EVEmail, and I'll put you in touch with other e-assholes like myself. Hello :)

How do you know what group to join? I just want one that wont be angry at me for not knowing everything and wont make me do things I don't want to do. But everyone keeps saying people stab you in the back or lie and cheat and steel and if possible I would like to minimise my chances of having that happen to me :( |

There is a running joke that I am not good with social situations. Someone had the bright idea of making me try an online video game because I am also not technical. My guess is this is the hardest game they could think of with the most social stuff involved? It's the premise of this thread, no? No. That is just how I came to join this video game. It was their attempt to make me socialize in any manner they could achieve.
Since starting I have learnt heaps thanks mostly, well entirely really, to the people in this thread and have bought a subscription thing to keep playing it.
That basis of this thread was initially to put myself out of my comfort zone I guess which worked, but now it is more to get myself "out there" which I was kind of hoping I had now achieved.
But there are those few people that seem to be hostile or something even though I've never done anything to them. I learnt about the trolls but there are now a small number of people that can vouch for me so I don't let it get to me.
It's my first video game, I don't know much, I'm trying to learn and trying to be social.
That's all. |

It sure sound like an experiment with being social Tiffany Hope wrote:[ It's my first video game, I don't know much, I'm trying to learn and trying to be social.
That's all. Experimentation is not only one of the best ways to learn it is really the only way that you can come to know something i.e. through experience. Social experimentation and social engineering have gotten bad names by being used for manipulative and selfish reasons. But like everything social experimentation is just a tool and as such can be used for good or bad. You can experiment with being social and grow as a person maybe even make some friends. I doubt most people would call that manipulative or bad. You can also preform social experimentation to learn how to better manipulate people for maximum benefit for the self with complete disregard for the costs to others. Something that I think most people would likely consider bad. I tend to lump anyone involved in sales or marketing in that category and I'll admit not always rightly so. Anyway my main point is don't be afraid to call something what it is just because typically that thing is abused. Everything has positive and negative aspects. I just meant that for me it wasn't an experiment. It was just me trying to not be a hermit and shy all my life. that's all :( |

However I would much rather have an actual dictionary around. I love dictionaries. Often with abbreviations in this game you and do better by asking google what it means. Example: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=what+does+wtf+meanHonestly in certain colloquial situations urban dictionary can be very helpful.

You've got most of the regular posters in the Newbie forum replying in this thread; Paranoid Loyd is another regular. "Hats off" is an expression that indicates respect, like a salute. You got money because people like you, or because you're a newbie. You'll also get bounties placed on your head, also because people like you or because you're a newbie. Trololol is a meme that caught on with the EVE crowd, which is often a weird community. EVE Devs being weird. And another one. Oh ok I thought someone was calling me a name lol. I tried to find who it was to give it back. I felt like someone had dropped their wallet and I had found it or something.
I thought you got a bounty on you if people wanted to have you blown up, but I hope I havnt done anything that makes people want me blown up :( |

Yeah the high sec areas (I hope of got this right) are boring now and I hate doing it all by myself lol. I've gone out and lost 2 ships, I've mined like 30 million dollars worth of stuff and sold it all, I've done heaps of skill training so I can do bigger ships and stuff.
I want to have some fun now so I need to find a group or something I think. |

Why am I advising you to go out and possibly get killed? Because once it's happened to you a time or two you realize that death is a minor set back. By the time it becomes a 'major' one, you are making so much ISK that... yup... it's just a minor one again!
Eventually, once in a corporation with lots of friends, getting all cozy and comfortable again, even with being killed, THEN you need to shift it up because it's at that point that you get complacent, and bored. Never get bored. EVE has about a billion things to do in it and much of it all starts with "What if..." I think those are the two most glorious and dangerous words in EVE... what if...
Getting killed a few times is one of the best things you can do to improve your enjoyment of the game. I recommend it strongly. Get in a rookie ship and fly into nullsec, and see how many systems you can do. Don't stop trying until you do at least 50 systems in a row. That's what I was doing! lol. I was trying to see how far I could go. I was looking for this place called fountain that I read about. I got there, then I got killed lol. But I mined a little bit too just to be cheeky :) |

If you want a taste of null go to Providence. Talk to the locals there. I spent a few years in-and-out of there. CVA and affiliates are cool people. KOS? CVA? Sorry :( |

Once you will violate their rules - they will put you on their Kill-On-Sight list, so CVA-members may attack you freely, and Providence will become just average null-sec space for ya.
They talk 'bout "Safe Providence", a null-sec region, where everyone may be happy and free. But Providence is just a hunting ground full of careless fools, who believe that bullshit. Their rules are pretty straightforward. They are one of the oldest alliances in the game. If you 'PvE' and don't go around actively attacking other players that are not hostile towards you, you won't have an issue with CVA. The gripers about CVA want to play on the darker side of the game, which is fine, but CVA intentionally plays the good guys and bad guys don't like them. What I'm not fond of with CVA is that they have a history of being very racist and biased towards Amarr, self extending Amarrian space into Providence. There's a few good You Tube videos on this history. Rumor has it that recently they have backed off the racial warpath and while still actively proclaiming Amarr, they aren't so brutal about it any more. If you have a negative status with Amarr, you may find yourself with problems in CVA space. However, you'll likely find them far more hospitable than CODE or similar groups that even try to bug folks in HiSec. I am already liking these guys and I'll definitely go look for them at some point. Yep, I'm Amarr. Sorry for the intrusion in this thread and thanks for the precious information! Not quite sure I understand what just happened?

I have a bounty on me? Why? I didn't do anything to anybody. I was invited to join this corp but there is not many people online and It wont let me leave (I am in some 24 hour waiting period?) when I found out they were at war and I got moved into some alliance chat thing.
Have I gotten myself into trouble? I log on every day but nobody told me someone wants me blown up :( All I do is mine in the safe areas. I'm not hurting anybody. I made 5 million now with what I have mined. Am I allowed to pay off the bounty on me myself or something?
