Welcome to EVE Tiffany Hope. If you have any questions about the game, you can ask them in this section of the forum without having to deal with [too much] trolling.

As for the "this is a boy's game" comment... ignore it. In EVE you will deal with a lot of stuff like this. Not sexist comments per se... but a lot of "shitstirring." Thick skin is kind of a requirement as a lot of people like to provoke others or will rush to judgement.

DT = Down time. It's when CCP shuts down the game for about 15 minutes or so every day at I think 11:00 am GMT without using DST. GMT is Greenwich mean time also know as UTC.

Team speak is an audio chat app for groups. It is used in MMOs alot for coordinating group efforts. Like fleet ops in this game or raids in other games or battlefields etc... anything where groups of people need to operate and have "comms" while playing.

Spectre fleet is an NPSI (Not Purple Shoot It ) group that does public roams and shoots anyone not in fleet.

Gank just means you are going to go blow up the guy that said that to you regardless of what concord thinks about the interaction.

I FC for Spectre, we aren't bad guys, we are content generators, and we work with other groups to bring good fights, we have fun, our opponents have fun, PvP'ers should PvP for the joy of it, not for win or loss, I enjoy PvP heavily, also enjoy PvE, but we aren't the bad guys, we are netral if anything, cause we engage pirates and criminals and people roaming Low Sec and Null Sec, who are all looking for PvP by virtue of being there. Plus, if we were the bad guys, why would I be happy and willing to help newer players? Even if they never join a Spectre Fleet, I enjoy making friends, it is great when you log in and people are already saying hello and stuff :)

Yeah as others said Ts3 is for your computer, it is a program, it is free, and all you need is a computer to use it, it is a great program, I will talk you through some other ones you will need, like PyFa, EFT, things that will help you in the long run.

Voice communications (voice comms) are used because in the heat of battle you can't take the time to type instructions to your fleet buddies. The game has voice comm capabilities, but players prefer to use third party programs (Ventrillo, TeamSpeak, or Mumble), because if the game crashes the voice comms won't and they can still organize everyone to log back in and continue the fight. Here is a video that shows voice-comms in action.

But voice comms are for later; as a newbie learning the game you can certainly do ok without voice.

As a warning, this game is about combat between players, and people get competitive to the point where they'll start throwing insults just to get you to falter or to dissuade you from killing them. It's not always friendly, and if they detect that you are new they may try to take advantage of your lack of knowledge about the game.

The game allows "bad" activities such as theft, scamming, espionage, piracy, etc.; if you want to be a bad guy you can, in this game. As a result, people will be slow to trust you, and you shouldn't trust anyone you don't know, and if a deal appears too good to be true, then it's probably a scam.

You are not bothering anyone or being a troll if you are being strait up with everyone. I think what people mean by claiming that you might be a troll is hinting that you might be a man IRL ( in real life ) that has been gaming online for decades.

So if you were not who you say you are and just pretending to be what you claim to be just to watch people react to the lie then you would be a troll. Even at that you would not be an angry or disruptive one so it could be worse.

But again you are not bothering anyone here by asking questions that you legitimately would like answers for.

It's just an EVE thing, you will start seeing it after a bit, don't worry about it, people thought I was a troll when I first started, it happens to a lot of people, if you know to much about the game (I read up for months before I started, so I new a bit for a newbie), people who don't know anything at all, just takes time, you will do fine, just focus on learning the game, and having fun, and don't listen to the negative, and you will be fine :)

Wow. I'm just trying to imagine EVE as my first MMO. It almost makes me think taking someone that never swam before and throwing them into a pool filled with sharks.

One of the goals of this game is to bring back a sense of danger, a frontier "lawless west" kind of atmosphere, where the only law is the one you made. Because of that, many things that would be disallowed on other games, and invoke instant bans and Game Master intervention. Here, CCP (the company that makes Eve) is pretty hands off. There is a very short list of things that are not ok. Basically, a newbie is supposed to be safe from scams, baiting, and other techniques to force pvp while in newbie systems, and the tutorial systems. Once you leave those systems you become fair game. NQ&A is also supposed to be a safe haven from trolling and harassment. If you posted this in General Discussions, you would have gotten helpful replies, and a lot of trolling and accusations of trolling. All other forums are considered part of the game, so anything that is ok in Local is ok in GD.

Since this is your first MMO, don't assume a player's true sex is the same as their avatar. The very great majority of player in eve are male.

There is a WGOE (women gamers of eve) channel where you can go to talk with other ladies if you start feeling stifled by testosterone.

Eve is very difficult to learn. But it is very rewarding. The time you invest in learning anything is never wasted. It is very deep and detailed. I've been playing since 2007 and I'm still learning stuff on a nearly daily basis.

Most of all, the community is very helpful if you demonstrate a willingness to learn, and an empowered attitude. We like shooting people, but the community is hard on anyone acting like a victim. Every time someone blows you up or successfully scams you, there is always something you could have done to prevent it, or even come out ahead. So if your attitude when you get blown up or otherwise beat by another player is, "I screwed up, what did I do wrong, and what can I do to fix it."

If you take that attitude to heart, you will go far in this game, and be welcome in any fleet.

Wow first game ever? What made you play eve? Pretty interesting choice for the first game, considering eve's reputation :P

Ok, to edit a post, you can go back to it, on page one, there is an "Edit" button next to the quote. Click that, then backspace through whatever you don't want to say.

As a forum courtesy, it is nice to put an "edit note" at the bottom, especially after you have already been replied to. This helps new readers who might be confused when followup posts refer to something that you said, that they didn't see in your post. This is why, usually you don't want to edit a post someone replied to. Also, editing your post doesn't edit the reply quote in someone else's post.

Anything you say online stays there forever. So someone can shift through your lifetime of posts and usually build a pretty accurate profile. Of course linking character names, and forum nicknames shouldn't be possible. But I was rudely surprised by someone I knew and hadn't spoken to in 20 years when he tracked me down to a public forum. I've read every post on this thread I do not recall you having posted your address. You did mention the town or at least get people familiar with the area a reference withing several miles of where you live but I think he was using a minor bit of artistic license in there.

I believe a more accurate statement would have been that you have no problems giving the details about the general area in which you live but you were stingy with details on why you played the game.

They are called ship skins. I've never used them but there is a section in the market for them and I think you can preview them in ship fitting and maybe even in the show info screen.

I'm not sure as I don't use skins. I noticed you ask this question before and was hoping someone who knew more than me would chime in. If you can't figure it out let me know and I'll jump in a chat with you and help you figure it out.

Well, there is no ability to chose your own colors, but you can choose predesigned skins, most ships have at least two to choose from, but it costs real money, or a lot of isk to buy the skins.

Amarr have the shiniest happiest ships. At least on the outside, the slaves I haul around never seemed that enthusiastic, maybe I need to whip them more.

There's no such thing as a "girl's game" or a "mens' game". Two of the more ruthless pirates I know in EVE are women IRL.

This game *is* generally aimed at people that are willing to do independent research into complex mechanics, and aggressively optimize to the point of bending the rules.

Experimentation is not only one of the best ways to learn it is really the only way that you can come to know something i.e. through experience.

Social experimentation and social engineering have gotten bad names by being used for manipulative and selfish reasons. But like everything social experimentation is just a tool and as such can be used for good or bad.

You can experiment with being social and grow as a person maybe even make some friends. I doubt most people would call that manipulative or bad.

You can also preform social experimentation to learn how to better manipulate people for maximum benefit for the self with complete disregard for the costs to others. Something that I think most people would likely consider bad. I tend to lump anyone involved in sales or marketing in that category and I'll admit not always rightly so.

Anyway my main point is don't be afraid to call something what it is just because typically that thing is abused. Everything has positive and negative aspects.

you can google any word followed the the word "definition" and a basic definition as well as several links to online dictionaries will come up. However I would much rather have an actual dictionary around. I love dictionaries.

Often with abbreviations in this game you and do better by asking google what it means. Example:

Getting killed a few times is one of the best things you can do to improve your enjoyment of the game. I recommend it strongly. Get in a rookie ship and fly into nullsec, and see how many systems you can do. Don't stop trying until you do at least 50 systems in a row.

Just to add a little bit of emphasis. Ergherhdfgh recommended NPSI fleets. These fleets like to fly into Providence where she hangs out, and can get you KOS to CVA. I don't know how CVA is about forgiving this kind of thing, but I assume it isn't a casual pat on the head.

If you want a taste of null go to Providence. Talk to the locals there. I spent a few years in-and-out of there. CVA and affiliates are cool people.

I am already liking these guys and I'll definitely go look for them at some point.
