I'm trying to re-install windows on my newly formatted SATA hdd (Seagate Barracuda 160gb 7700rpm). Ive partitioned to one 100gb, one 56gb partitions, so the size isnt a problem (theres a 137gb barrier for installing xp ) but I need the HDD drivers to go with it. When you install XP, theres a prompt to install them off a floppy which is meant to come from the manufacturer, but this PC was pre-built so.... If anybody could find the drivers it'd be much appreciated, google's not turning up any results... ---

Just some background for this issue... lofty's backed up his files using a Knoppix LiveCD and a flash USB stick and then decided to just wipe the damn drive and start over with a new installation of Windows.

Also, upon browsing I've discovered that I need the motherboard drivers, not the HD ones. Now, how do I find out my motherboard? I'd guess it's dell, as this is as Dimension 9150 (modded ofc ) but I dont know what the motherboard is... ---

It is probably the Sata controller driver that you are missing. So you need to figure out what Sata controller is on your motherboard. When the computer boots it should display the name of the sata controller, probably right after the BIOS posts. When you have the name of the controller, google it, download the driver and place it on a floppy. When the Windows installation boots up it says something like: "Press F6 if you want to install a SCSI or RAID driver" Press F6 and a bit later on in the installation, it tells you to put in the floppy with the driver on it. Just follow the instructions after that.

you should be able to download the drivers from dell if you have a valid servicetag that is.

Edited by: Dr Shameless on 04/02/2007 08:20:37 if you got an install disk with built-in service pack 2 (winxp sp2) then it installs on sata even without any additional driver

As InzanityFO pointed out, you're undoubtedly needing the SATA controller drivers.
God, remind me to never buy a Dell - their site is festering pile of *****. At any rate, my Google results are mentioning that Dell slipstreams the drivers - that is, shoves them into a Windows installation disc. You get an install disc with your system? If so, the drivers you need are undoubtedly somewhere on it.
For the specific motherboard make/model, good luck. Only thing I can turn up is that it might be using the Intel 950 Chipset, which, well, I'm not really seeing on Intel's page either.
Best thing to do might be call up Dell, tell 'em you need SATA controller drivers for your system, and threaten to pod them until they fork 'em over.

Grrr, I found the drivers for my motherboard, installed + ran the windows install, hit f6 and I'm granted with 4 drivers. I try the first one, no luck, 2nd, no luck and so on. After I accept the EULA for windows, where you select the partition to install onto, all I get are four 'unknown drive' Any clues? ---

Have you got the mobo driver cd? If so have you got the F6 driver off that? If so and you are still having trouble make yourself a self booting XP SP2 CD using an existing XP disc, a download of SP2 and some info off the net. I haven't done it myself but it's easily doable apparently.
Or just get an XP SP2 CD from somewhere. __________________________________
