How's that for a thread name
Getting an (informal) intellectual debate going on about religion, and I'd like to know where the space-faring, motherless, cut-throat criminal sociopaths that play EvE stand. It takes place in our Public Chat thread so anyone can post.
Is God dead? Do you care? Poast in my thread, I'll see you there:

All Faith Needs A Shield
Well the pagan god franchise got more business in days of old when people had to face death as a daily possibility and lived off and died too the earth they stood on.
Its an ideological swindle but there are no other travel operators that offer anything beyond the door that has 'death on it'. |

It's like this ...
Religion is all about comfort. The world is a cold, harsh, cruel place - despite the efforts of many to pretend it isn't - and when this cold harshness cruelly comes into our lives - and we are rendered helpless in it's face - there is a tendency to seek comfort in the belief that there is a God and that we can at least ask him for help.
Here - the things the simplistic fail to realize is that - it doesn't matter if it's true or not. What matters - is that in a time of great pain or loss - if praying makes us feel better - that in and of itself is worth something.
Those who like to think of themselves as intellectually superior to believers - are denying themselves that comfort - which is their call - but to denigrate those who take advantage of it - is asinine. Who the hell are they to deny someone who has suffered some great loss or is in great fear whatever comfort they might find?
Now - that said and it being the reason for religion - religions have a checkered past.
On the one hand - if you can convince some people that instead of bashing in their neighbors skulls and stealing their stuff - that you shouldn't do that because there will be an accounting on judgment day - that serves a positive purpose. The neighbor who is still alive has benefited greatly. Obviously - this doesn't work with all people inclined to bash heads and steal - but to whatever extent it does work - that's that many fewer bashed heads - which counts for a lot if your head is one of them.
On the other - religion has commonly been used as an excuse for people to exercise their own preferences for benefiting themselves. What better excuse might you have for bashing in your neighbors head than that God told you to do it?
No where in the above - does the actual existence of God matter a whit.
Whatever form a particular religion may take - these are the type of reasons that religions exist.
When we are children - and things go badly for us - we can turn to our parents for comfort and support. Once we reach adulthood - we may well be to some greater or lesser extent on our own - or - at any time in our lives - we might be confronted with a problem greater than the ability of our parents to protect us from it. Thus - turning to Our Father - Which Art in Heaven ... If your personal father can't help - turning to a greater father figure - may at least make you feel better - whether it actually does you any other good or not.
The thing is - in terrible times - just receiving a little comfort - has real value to it.
That is why - in the face of continuing intellectual snobbery towards the subject - religions continue to exist and will continue to exist. Their existence isn't dependent on whether there really is a God or not - merely on the BELIEF that there is.
To those that would sneer at others for taking comfort in what may or may not be real - next time you are in great pain or have suffered a great loss, are concerned for the life and safety of a loved one or are in fear for your life - you are free to handle that as you see fit.
And OBTW - good luck with that ... I hope you can find as much comfort in your intellectual superiority as others do in their faith. Whatever philosophy of life you may have - hopefully - it will provide you with some comfort when things go really badly. Just be careful about philosophies ... as ... many of them (like Buddhism) tend to turn into religions ... that ... or they merely act as substitutes.
You might also note - that when it comes to such as religious fanaticism - it has nothing on political fanaticism (see The Red Guards in China ....).
Thus - many of the negative aspects you see in religion - are negative aspects of humanity - and will tend to find expression in any form of human activity - with religion and politics merely being two of any number.

@Toshiro I would definitely agree that religion in general gives people the opportunity to move past certain limiting factors such as grief, feelings of inadequacy, etc. As a believer in a specific religion and God (God in this sense meaning my personal deity, not a god as in the archetype), I would however caution any who would label religion as a crutch for the weak of mind and will, as that is not always the case. For some, a belief in a God who caused cosmic events to occur, who holds the sheer mind-bogglingly complexity of the universe together. Albert Einstein was one such person, he believed in a divine being or force that did not involve itself in the affairs of day to day life, but was more of a cosmic entity that caused the laws of science and nature to be binding and kept the universe running, so to speak.
When we speak of religions, do we include such as these? There is little comfort to be derived from a god who is content to merely keep gravity turned on and make certain the laws of physics apply, as this god would never answer a prayer or cause the supernatural to occur, or indeed if this god would even be aware of our existence on a personal level. |

Let's follow simple logical scheme. God is omnipotent. If the hunam asks God to show himself, God will hear him, because he is omnipotent. God can show himself to human, because he is omnipotent. But he does not show himself to human. Thus either he does not exist, or doesn't want human to know about his existence. And because God is omnipotent, whatever human will do to find about about God, human will never know about God's existence, whichever scientific or religious method he will apply.
This leaves human choice only to believe or not, because he will never find the truth. Any attempts to prove God's existence or absence are futile.

Is not an intellectual debate about religion an oxymoron?
Regardless. God, as a concept, is man made. Made to first explain everything. In later yeras it is twisted into a form of control by abusing natural feelings and saying that they are sins, but if you bow down to your selected imaginary sky dad it will all be OK again.
Also you must donate money. Because the omnipotent god simply can't handle money. |

An intellectual Debate about religion is by no means an oxymoron.
Actually I think it's quite fascinating that practically all human societies independently came to the conclusion, that there are some supernatural beings responsible for the stuff they do not understand.
The conclusion that we simply do not understand certain things yet because we don't know enough about them would be equally good, but it seems like no one took this approach (at least not before the Age of Enlightenment and if we ignore some greeks).
Okay, this topic has nothing to do with the question "Is there a God?", but I think it's actually quite interesting because it probably tell you a lot about humans or the human psyche.

I am more of an agnostic then an atheist. I do not know whether a god exists or not.
What I certainly do not believe is in a god that judges every single one of the actions in every persons life. Or that it is god's will to detonate bombs in public area, kill doctors and nurses in abortion clinics etc. The number of nasty examples is near endless.
God is far to often use as an excuse to go out and murder people and as an override to their consciece, since it was the will of god to do this or that. I also think that if we would invent time-travel and really get to see the Buddha, Abraham, Jesus, Mohammed and so on then we would either get World War 3 or even more likely the collapse of 90% of all religions.
My logic conclusion about this is, if I would be wrong and heaven and hell do indeed exist, then I am better off going straight to hell then being with fanatics in heaven. The company down there can only be better.

Hmmm...I thought there was some explicit forum rule against discussing religion, but it seems I am mistaken.
For what it's worth, I am atheist down to my rotten core, but I don't mind people being religious, as long as they don't bother me with it.
