Greetings new forum people.
I am looking to create a brand-spankin' new mission runner, aiming obviously for Caldari missions.
I have a definite skill plan in mind, with time frames and all that no-brainer stuff.
My question is, am I better off ignoring gunnery all together and focusing on missile skills? There seems to be some solid missile boats in all classes while I'm on my way up. Not knowing much about Caldari missions, I am curious if missiles will see me all the way through level 4s without missing out on anything because my gunnery skills will be non-existent.
And I do apologize for the pedestrian nature of my questions and I appreciate your pity. |

In current state, caldari gun boats sucks big time compared to their missile counterparts, so I would say you are ok ignoring them.
Typical caldari mission runner career goes like this: kestrel (light missiles), for lvl1 missions -> Caracal (medium missiles) for lvl 2 missions -> Drake (heavy missiles) for lvl3 missions -> Raven (cruise missiles) for lvl4 missions.
One interesting skill to check out in gunnery section is "weapon upgrades" and "advanced weapon upgrades", that you should train as it is quite useful. |

Thanks!
Now would I be in lvl 1's long enough to warrant the Navy Hookbill as far as missile frigs are concerned? Or does the Kestrel do a well enough job?
edit: I suppose it would be functional in some lvl 2's as well... |

If you want to do missions, just train up missiles (and a.o. shield skills).
Cookie Cutter Caldari training plan: L1 - Kestrel L2 - Caracal (with Assault Launchers) L3 - Drake L4 - Raven/Tengu/CNR/Golem
The Hookbill is a nice ship but it doesn't have a lot of added value. Personally I went Kestrel -> Drake -> Tengu. L2s also allow battlecruisers - not really a challenge in a Drake.
Training hybrids isn't really useful for mission runners. The only Gunnery skills you'd definitely want to train sooner or later are Weapon Upgrades and Advanced Weapon Upgrades. |

only good gun boat for pure pve would be harpy (reportedly gets better dps than hawk from what I read anyway). Would not train guns just for that ship lol.
Besides that....missiles the way to go. I have trained to t2 rails on a rokh for pvp purposes on a combat char, have looked for pve fits to get a break from missile spam on a caldari char....nothing has screamed try me in that hunt to be honest. |

I'm far from being the most experienced capsuleer around, so take this with a grain or two of salt. I've been almost exclusively a mission runner since starting in late December. I happen to like the gunboats, but that's purely a personal preference (yoiks, alliteration much?) The only two advantages I can think of for rails over missiles are these two: defender missiles can't shoot down hybrid ammo, and there's no delay from weapon firing to damage being dealt.
In missile launchers' favor, though are the following: ability to deal different damage types, no need to worry about tracking speed, and the Caldari ships do tend to favor launchers over rails, for the most part. You don't see a 4 turret hardpoint frigate in the Caldari inventory, now do you?
So, as much as I enjoy my rails (scoff away, if you will), I'd have to agree that missiles are probably the overall better route to go. |

Another vote for missiles, especially for newer players.
One of the best things about Caldari is you have access to the Tengu. If you aim for this, then that means you can train Caldari cruiser to 5, and not have to work about skilling up larger missiles (cruises and torps), as the Tengu hits really hard with HMLs.
The only down side is that a Tengu is pretty damn expensive. If you REALLY wanted one and do not have the isk, you might want to think about buying and selling a GTC.

I didn't have much time to divert from industry skills to get into a missioning ship. Going to put in another vote for missile ships. I've been flying a Drake for months, it doesn't take long at all to be able to fit it out with tech II shield upgrades that make it basically unbreakable. Extra points if you fit mission specific hardeners and use specific damage types. Plus, going all shields and heavy missiles makes for an easy transition into the Tengu, arguably the best missioning ship.
If you're looking to be time effective, you could do a whole lot worse than missile ships. |

I took the same path as OP when I began playing 3 months ago. Just wanted to confirm that going all missile and shield is very comfortable for missioning.
However I recommend training for Tech2 light / med drones. In L3 / L4, the drake have a hard time popping elite frigs. Warriors II don't. These SP won't be wasted if you decide later to train for gunships, mining barges or any ship bigger than a frigate. Moreover, shield + drones + missiles + a bit of gallente crosstrain opens the Gila / Rattlesnake path, which seems more than decent for pve. |

You probably won't be in level 1's long enough for a Hookbill, however the Hookbill can pretty easily do level 2's as well. Still, you probably won't be in level 2's long enough to warrant a Hookbill.
The first Caldari corp I grinded didn't have medical services, so I picked another one that did and used a Hookbill to grind through level 1 and 2, quite quickly I might add.
You can ignore gunnery, except for weapons upgrades / advanced weapons upgrades. |
