Hi,
For a long time I've kept myself of ranting about this issue, but my temper has reached a point where I cannot do that any longer. This rant is about the drone Malfunctionality, and there is a small request for everyone who agrees to my points which I've stated below(the numbered ones). We - the people who uses drones and have problems with their functionality - have waited for many months, or maybe even half of a year, for a patch that would make them work properly, but after every patch, we have had to get disappointed: No fix for the drones.
My humble request for the people is to fill in petitions to the CCP about the drone malfunctionality, as long as it takes them to start fixing the problems with drones. Include the points which I've stated below to your petition, and we shall see if we can make things together:
1) Drones slows down mysteriously(or they won't dock). - Often when I call my drones back to orbit, or to dock with the dronebay, they slow down their speed so much, that even my battleship(that goes about 150ms) can outrun them, and they'll remain like that untill I order them to attack something else or catch them like paralyzed flies by turning around my BS and go get them!
This malfunctionality has cost me multiple all sized of T2 drones, and everyone knows that they're not cheapest to buy, especially the medium ones!
2) Drones attack random targets. - What is the point in drones splitting up way that each of them attack different targets(like after they've killed their target - and I haven't given them any further orders.)? Can't they be fixed so that they attack same target? The ideal solution would be somekind of 'drone settings'-interface, that lets you to adjust their AI.
3) Drones won't obey commands. - They have will of their own! Even I've clearly ordered them to attack specific target, they make up their own decision and only few - if any - attacks the target I've specified, but they split up again to attack random targets!
Please, if you are annoyed with the current drone fuctionality, fill in a petition to CCP, so that they'll receive a ****load of them to wake them up and start doing something about the issue!
Furthermore, post all kind of observations/comments on this thread to keep it alive and gathering as much attention as possible!
Thank you for your attention.

I would like to second that. Think of the stupid, innocent drones that are being killed simply because they were never taught how to return to ship properly.

Dear All,
I do use drones like everybody else and yes there are not very intelligent indeed. Regarding drones not picking the right target, I noticed that it only happens if they are a bit far away and take some time to get the target. At some point, they will simply give up and select a nearest target, the trick there is to monitor the drones moves and reselect the desired target to make sure the drones pick the right target. It is a pain but at least it solves some of the hassle.
Drones lack of intelligence is known to CCP and you can find somes of the issues being investigated in the known issues.
However, something is clear pettitioning this issue will not solve the problem. You need to bug report the issue not petition it. Please don't petition it since at most it will get disregarded.

I've been trying to plot the pattern of when drones choose a new target and when they do not. I've ruled out many possibilities including drones attacking the target doing the most damage. What it comes down to is length of time between the order given and the drone entering their attacking orbit. This is most easily demonstrated using Ogre drones due to their godawfully slow speed.
From what I've seen, the critical time is just about 30 seconds. Using a stationary target 44km from me, the Ogre base ogre speed puts the arrive time at around 30 seconds. 70% of the time the Ogre drone's status will flash from Fighting to Idle..pause for 1-2 seconds, then change back to Fighting at which point the Ogre will immediately proceed to another target within it's maximum range but typically the largest nearest vessel. This means it will sort by ship size first in decending order by distance. Closest BS first, furthest frig last.
I can get other drones to forget their targets by having them attack a vessel 44km away and just as they reach that target, send them to another target in the opposite direction that is 44km from my position. That makes their travel distance 88km. Most of the time (95% for ogres and decreasing dramatically by speed) the other drones will lose their targets.
The only method I can employ is to make sure I regularly refresh the drone orders even after they are in orbit around the intended target. There will be times that even when a ship is close, one will decide he'd rather fly off and attack some BS orbiting 65km away rather than bust the ship 5km in front of me.
Really, this wouldn't be so bad if Drones operated as a group..a single individual. The order of the drones in the group determines the drone that "leads" the group. Where it goes, the others follow.

I have nothing to add, i only second that. Its a bug and its annoying to see drones being destroyed because of that behaviour or much worse to be nearly killed.

i've lost countless drones (and each hammerhead II costs around 1.2M isk!!!!) because they didn't come back to the drone bay when commanded to, even if they are at 2000m. and ofc i can't turn around to go and get them when i am trying to get out of there in first place. this specially sucks when i want to micromanage them because they got aggro and are getting killed.
CCP owes me probably around 50M if not more, just in drones, due what the OP mentioned in (1)
i did petition it i was told to bugreport it i did bugreport it
and i got some mails from some GM who said he tested it and it also happened to him.
the thing is, it appears to happen very very often to 5m3 drones (like warriors) and happens less to 10m3 drones (hammerheads). i didnt test on bigger drones. maybe the 5m3 drones are so small they forgot to give em a "brain"?
i mean how ******* hard can it be, a drone that achieves 2500m/s to catch up with a battlecruiser which flies at 450m/s at most... and why the hell do they just stop at 2000m where i can't even scoop them?
this happens to me since i play this game (around 3 month) i have reported it infinite times... nothing has been done. how freaking hard is it to compare the sourcecode for medium drones (which seem to work better) to the sourcecode of small drones (which are heavily broken) and see what's wrong?

They've been broken for 3 years or more. Is that so hard to repair or do they even want to repair it?!?

I'm fairly sure that it's the collision thingie messing with it. Basically they start bumping (humping) each other and that slows them down to almost a stand still. I've had the same thing happen to tractored cans that got very close to each other (very as in bumping distance).
