The playstation 3 is a nice machine with a 60 Gb hard drive and other impressive technologies such as its much talked about "Blu-ray", however all these gizmo's it seems come at a cost that gamers just don't feel they are willing to bare,
in short they have released a machine with new technologies too soon, resulting in a large expensive white elephant.
I believe the playstation 3 is going to end up the same way the mega CD, 32x and other consoles ended up, death by lack of 3rd party titles before being quietly swept under the carpet.

To be fair, theres a "Premium" version (with 60 GB hdd, etc.) and a toned down version with a 20 GB hdd, and some of the gadgets left off. Should be pretty cheap for a next gen, if you go for the cheaper version.
And games wise, I'm already seeing sequels to alot of current PS2 games, aswell as a few interesting new ones.
I think you're being a bit premature. It might flop, but its far too early to tell. Could still go either way at this point. -----------------------------------------------

currently the playstation 3 is being out sold by the playstation 2 in japan lol
and unfortunatley the the budget version is not being advertised or pushed very much so much so that when the european launch arrives Sony have said only the 60 Gb version will be onsale .... and at a very very steep price lol

aye the ps3 is a giant piece of **** ;p
i loved my ps2 LOVED, infact i still love it! BUT FFS SONY IS RETARDED. They have gotten to greedy especially if u couple them with SOE. omgwtfbbq ;p
I'm all up for the wii60 (being the price of the good ps3, or 100 over if u want the premium which u should ;p).
I give nintendo massive props for going for something other then graphics, the wiimote is awesome and I've never had so much fun. I now love nintendo ;p. While there aren't to many games that I'd be willing to shell out for right now, theres plenty coming. And I don't usually shell out for games unless they damn good anyway so ;p. I much prefer graphics over gameplay and nintendo did it in style ;p
The 360s great too ;;p good graphics and all and awesome online capabilities. It's got some damn fun games too like gears of war and the recent lost planet with some cool ones coming. My problem with it? ****IGN DIE HALO YOU POS DIE AND BURN IN THE FIERY PITS OF HELL. YOU ARE A COOKEE CUTTER MEDIOCRE FPS WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE THE BEST GAME EVER?! YOU DIDN'T INVENT ANY OF THE THINGS UR CREDITED FOR AND YOU GOT DAMN NOTHING SPECIAL ID PICK ANY PC FPS OVER YOU YOU PILE OF CRAP. BURN
But yeah I digress, sony blew it. I only see one good game for it right now and thats resistance fall of man, and tbh I would pick gears over it anyday. Lost planet multi is more fun too ;p. You got friends over? PS2 ain't my system of choice anymore ;p Wii all the way for that category. Sure its much more powerful. But it's got the greedy ass price, the lack of good games, and the graphics aren't THAT much better anyway. Really I find gears graphics much better then resistance's :| And the copying off the wii with the motion sensing is laughable ;p I'm sorry but to me the PS3 is a failure and I hope sony starts caring more about games or they pack up and follow halo into the lowest pit of hell were they meet an eternity of suffering.
Note: I hope the stupid foam thing helmet you get with the $100 legend version of halo 3 chokes the wearer. ------------------------------------------------ NEWLY ADDED ON 1/19 (though applies to all posts before ;p)

certainly seems to be an opinion among a *lot* of developers I know, that PS3's dropped the ball badly, and plausibly could hand the market advantage over to others in this cycle, if not completely lose it by the next gen race in 2011-ish. I was talking to the VP of one of the major US publishers last summer and they stated something along the lines of "of all the platforms in their current state, the one I fear is the Wii - that I expect to make the most gains in the next three years" - despite the fact their company doesnt produce titles for it. certainly seems he was spot on, so far.
it's interesting to note that sony's latest market figures indicate their games division lost something approaching half a billion dollars (55 billion yen) in the last financial quarter, which hit the entire company for about 5% fall in net profits. - Ps3 is making a pretty nast loss per unit, in the hopes of profitability through software sales - so don;t hope for cheaper games, I fear. PSP is also underperforming it seems, from the figures I've got. And while the market history would suggest a peak for the PS3 in sales to likely be around 2009-2010, it's going to be interesting to see how that hits developers in the medium-short term - I'm certainly intrigued, and want to look forward to seeing how it goes, as when PS2 was launched, I was still working as a designer in pen and paper, nevermined on computers
I don;t think with the fianancial backing behind it that it will do a MegaCD/Jaguar and bomb, but Ps3 is certainly in a little wobble till it gets its killer apps and ensures developers that we're not going to be out of our jobs creating for it.
Interesting times, eh? glad I'm not working on the bloody thing. I saw the architecture on the Cell chips a few yeras ago. Almost made my brain bleed.

Please oh please oh please keep the console war crap somewhere else.
As far as i'm concerned though, ps3 not worth the money, wii not worth the money either. Neither have any games i want right now and come on they've been released for all of a what 3 months? I'll wait till both get some decent games and then perhaps think about picking one up. My 360 and psp are keeping me entertained already.

Dont read the thread if you dont want to see console wars.
I'm happy with my X360... Will be getting a wii when there back on the shelves, not in a rush to get one. DS is great fun too. When my sis is down with hers, my GF and my two neighbours. Its a great laugh.
Playstation 3. All i have read is thats its not running as it should. I'm not 100% sure if it was respeced or anything. But a report showed that the speeds and transfer rates of things like RAM etc are not what they should be.
Yes the games look great, no better then x360. All it really has is a cheaper option Bluray player, which wil come down in price. And its prob going to end up like Betamax tapes

Now would be a great time to pick up a PS2 if you don't have one: Low price Last models (read: most perfected design) Most games ----------

Playstation 3 is a powerful machine, but the launch has been completely botched,
-public don't seem to like it, it was given the number eight spot on PC World's list of "The Top 21 Tech Screwups of 2006," where it was criticized for being "Late, Expensive, and Incompatible."
- developers don't seem to like it Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director of Valve, called the PS3 "àa disaster on so many levels," and suggested "[Sony] should cancel it ( and you thought i was being harsh lol)
having said that it is a powerful machine and there are some good games in the pipeline, such as metal gear solid and final fantasy which a playstation 3 exclusives. ello :p |

The PS3 still has the potential to be as great as the PS2, but it's the games that make the console, so even if it wasn't ridiculously overpriced it still wouldn't be 'all that' yet.

I was talking to a guy at EBGames about the PS3, he said it takes them about 2 weeks to sell a PS3 once it arrives in the store. Meanwhile the Wii is flying off the shelves, and 360's still sell faster than the PS3's even though they've been out far longer.

Apart from my PSP which is great (v1.5 FTW), I'm not a fan of anything Sony. The PS3s price tag is going to be one of it's biggest detterents. A console is supposed to be a relatively cheap games machine. Consoles are usually aimed at people who don't own powerful gaming computers. That's not to say that many people nowadays wouldn't have both, I do for one. But a console needs to be cheap, fun and accessible.
I used to be a big Nintendo fan (Sega too, back in the day), but have noticed that while I've gotten older and my tastes matured, Nintendo haven't. They've stayed aimed at the younger market, and while I'm sad that there's little on offer that appeals to me now (there are still some great titles, don't get me wrong), I think it's great that they've stuck to their target market, especially as Sony and MS have squarely taken each other on over older gamers. I think Sony have developed this console to appeal to the same folks who bought a PlayStation 1 for themselves, upgraded to PS2 and are now eager for their latest. There are a lot of Sony fan-boys out there, and despite the price-tag, I think the units will still shift, albeit nowhere near the level of the other two next-gen consoles.
Personally though I'd like to see HD-DVD win the format war for the sake of compatability, and 360 the console war cos I just don't like Sony! I don't know anyone planning on getting a PS3, and as soon as BioWare finish "Mass Effect" I'll be picking up a 360 for myself. Wii looks tasty though...anyone played that "Red Steel"? Looks like fun. -------------

i cant imagine PS3 doign as well as the last 2 versions, its too much of the same games but snake has a million more hairs on his head and face, the cars have a few more bumps and scrapes. u still going to be playing the same thing over again.
yes i has nice technology (been told u can access ur own ps3 via psp anyhere in world) but other than all the fandangled things doesnt make a great game. i'm disappointed that they didnt make the really epic rpg or fps games for it with all the xtra space the disks provide instead of just making thins look pretty, lets face it, when ur running away from huge monsters/****s/undead creatures, u dont stop, pan round and go... "oooh that wallpaper is stunning, i must look at that for the stairs" i love my Wii/DS and for the serious games X360 is a lot better at doing them since its a PC in a box and HD-DVD is turning out to be winning format over Blu-Ray by looks of sales and developers. as for fun u cant really beat the DS/Wii combo, wii sports is one the best games out and the graphics are little more than an N64

I have a friend who works at Eidos, who had an interesting bit to say. You'd think that when a company launches a gams console, one of their main concerns would be to make developers happy, and their jobs as easy as possible. The PS3 Dev kit costs approximately ú10,000 GBP. It's a PS3 without the fancy case and some extra functions for devs to use, and apparently requires it's own nuclear power plant to run. Not a good start! |

*EDIT* for clarifcation, ive owned a Wii ever since its release day in the UK, december 8th. and i can say this. they key to a successful game is Immersion, not graphics. dont get me wrong, graphics can help a lot when immersing someone in the game, but it all lies on being able to grab your attention and keep it there. ive played Call of Duty 3 on the 360, the PS3 and i own it for the Wii. sure, it looks stunning on the 360 and slightly-less stunning on the PS3, and it looks like call of duty 1 on the Wii, but the Wii is the ONLY one that has had me completely mentally drenched in the experience its giving me. walking around, aiming your gun everywhere pulling the trigger with easy movements, actually having to THROW grenades (which is harder than it looks), and actually having to do tire yourself out by using an oar to row yourself to safety whilst everywhere else its just "Press X/A to row". that's something that makes me laugh every time - nintendo have managed to completely redefine what "next gen" means, by focusing on interface and gameplay, rather than simply more polys, more effects, and tougher hardware
I've waited for that moment for years, and the reaction from the public might just well spark a revolution among designers.
and it also indicates that at last, we might be levelling off in the graphics, and starting to focus on improving other elements

If you are looking for a home entertainment system (what the 360 and PS3 are marketed as) then the PS3 isn't badly priced (a next gen DVD player still ocsts more). When comparing the price of the 360 you need to remember that you need to spend an extra ú190 + whatever the price of the extra hard drive is (if they release it) to get a 360 with the same abilities as a PS3.
The big problem with the PS3 at the moment is the games. Apart from resistance:fall of man they really suck. It was the same with the 360 tho, it took about 6 months for good games to come out for it.
In the long run I think the PS3 and 360 will probably get similar sales figures. I also think that the Wii will out sell them both by a large margin.
Also the PS2 is still outselling every console wordwide, not just the PS3.
Originally by: Takeshi Miyazaki HD-DVD is turning out to be winning format over Blu-Ray by looks of sales and developers.
Blue-Ray is outselling HD-DVD by about 3 to 1 at the moment. I really can't see any way of HD-DVD winning the war. Almost all the major studios are backing Blue-RAy (7 out 8 in the US).

yeah thats pretty much what was said a while ago, the technology for graphics between consoles is at a point now where they cant get much better on a home console as it cant be continually upgraded all time and so companies are going to have to do something else other than all show and nothing else. Its very funny that the original development kits for the wii was a gamecube dev kit with more juice being pumped into it by a PC until the proper kits began to appear in game offices.
the graphics on wii range fro some really great like Zelda (at times) and the downright simplistic, Wii Sports and that rainbow fruit twisty turing thing. Another thing is games prices, 360 is abotu ú45 average which is pretty good for a HD compatible game and thenWii is ú35-ú40 with sum of the simpler ones being just ú20, then u have PS3 where they are about $60 at present which when they come over to uk will probs be about the same. PS3 is ok for the rich kids who will buy one to go into their tudio flats but are too busy workign to actually get time to play on it. i'll stick to my eve and wii with the odd shot on my mate x360.

actually, the graphics on zelda are nowhere near as good as other Wii games. Zelda was developed entirley for the gamecube and then decided on a port and a control change right at the end and just stuck a bloom effect on. Afaik, they originally were going to develop the PHantom Hourglass as the launching Zelda for the Wii, but it wouldnt have been ready anywhere close to the console launch date.
NFS Carbon is a good example of graphics on the Wii, and theyre also meant to be pretty sharp in 480p. however, i dont have any component cables nor do i own an HDTV (yet)| Signature removed, please avoid using images involving relgious symbols like that. -Ivan K |

The thing is ... WHY buy a PS3 ?
You buy a console that you want to play games on. Atm PS3 has the worst titles of all 3 consoles and no killer application. MSG 4 still has some time to go and FF XIII is still far far away.
On the other hand, Wii launched with Zelda (if I remember correct the sales of Zelda are about 3/4th of the Wii ones) and there are still games incomming like Warioware, Smash and Metroid.
Xbox360 has the advantage of beeing on the market longer than the other 2 so there are some nice titles to grab aswell as incomming ones (Halo 3 anyone?).
Talking out of the console wars, the PC has some very sweet games for this year like Bioshock, Supreme Commander, Spore aswell as other games.
It's going to be a nice 2007 for gaming, that's for sure _______

Most people will agree that immersion is what makes a game great (the PS series proved this as it has always had the least powerful system and relied on the immersiveness of the games ). Most people will not agree that waving your arm around is immersive. You're still looking at a little 2-D display. True immersion comes from within. Real immersion relies on you forgetting that it is a game. Forgetting your real self and feeling like you are in the game. Relating real-world actions to in-game actions is actually the exact opposite of this, and is a step back towards arcade style games.
Now, the Wii is a great achievement, and it is rightfully kicking the PS3's ass (Sony really dropped the ball this time), but I cannot stand the constant view that Nintendo are going for immersion over graphics, when real immersion comes not from the platform but the design of the game. The PS3 focuses on graphic improvements because it already has everything else. It has one of the best controller designs in history. It's predecessors have had some of the best games ever. All that's left is to improve the technical aspects, like the graphics.
Nintendo lost the console war, and have given us the most advanced arcade games system to date instead.
Oh, and yeah, FPSes on consoles FTL, and putting forward an FPS as a next-gen level of immersiveness FTL. Good example though, of what the Wii is all about, since FPSes are glorified arcade games. ----------

Sony have dropped the ball and have been dumbly trying to pick it back up with butter coated hands for a year now.
However a consoles success comes from its games. I love reading comments like Sony is dead the PS3 games suck. In a year or 2's time we will happily be playing fantastic games on cheaper PS3's.
Just as many of the x360 owners are doing now. If the PS3 has been out for a year and it is still in the situation then by all means prepare for its burial but please stop the bleeting about how they've 'lost'
Look at what 'Saiyar' said above all very true.
Personally im a gamer to the very tips of my pinky toes and im anxiously waiting for any and all good releases. The system its released on does not matter one iota.
To buy a X360 with the same features as a PS3 will cost you more úúú's than buying a PS3. I cant really argue with that. Even though i personally will wait until the barrage of great games are released im not going to yell boo Sony until they prove they've ballsed up!

The thing that gets me with all console games and machines is that the market seems to be set simply to fleece as much money as possible from the customers. All consoles are a good 5 years behind PC's to start with, so it's not exactly earth shattering new tech. But what realy pigs me is teh price difference between identical titles. In the UK at least. Both Call of duty 2 and the last Ghost recon came in at ú10 more expensive for the same game for a 360 then for a PC. Actualy no, not the same game. The PC versions were not only cheaper, but had extras not on the 360 version, and not to mention all the extra support from modding you get with PC games and which the consoles seem to have gone out of their way to kill off
