Not sure if this idea has come up before. I was considering starting up a corporation for the express purpose of outsourcing combat personnel and ships to other corporations for contracted periods. However, just from reading some of the forums and talking to people online, does anyone think this might be feasible in the face of vengeful former opponents who aren't willing to let things slide after a cessation of the mercenaries' contract? |

This is interesting. You see the way I see you can either avoid the sort of guys who will old grudges (for example any of big alliances).
I would say the best way to work as mercenaries at the moment would be to hire out a group of say 5 dedicated experienced PvP pilots in battleships to 'bulk out' a small->mid level size corporation against the enemy. I would say 10 million a week + expenses per pilot would be a good fee.
Grudges are funny things. I suppose to avoid them you could do several things:
a) Only act as defense if fighting a big alliance. No one minds losing an attack ship much - an indy full of minerals is different.
b) Avoid podding unless it is part of the contract. People also don't like this much.
c) Make it clear and public when you accept and finish the contract. That way there is no confusion.
Sounds fun anyway. Even frigate guys could act as mercenaries, attacking the enemies mining ops and haulers. A 'skirmish' contract.

Please look at my posters history, you will read your example right there. Maybe it will happen, maybe not.. Keep your eyes open.
This is my Tempest. There are many like it but this one is mine. My Tempest is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Tempest is useless. Without my Tempest I am useless. I must fire my Tempest 1400mm howitzers true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. Before God I swear this creed: my Tempest and myself are defenders of my corporation, we are the masters of my enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no enemy, but peace. Amen. |

S.A.S are a merc corp exactly like what you are thinking of starting up, small tight group of experienced pvpers.
It is a very feasable idea, corps and even alliances will pay well to rid them of pests in their regions/mining areas.
Best advice it to pick an area near a pirate hotspot, generally best to base in a .5 or higher for defencive purposes and go around the alliances in the area or large solo corps mining in 0.0 and ask for work, a surprising number will be looking for corps like the one you are describing starting

If you could somehow build a reputation as being non-political and people see you strickly as a merc corp it might work.
Some folks will just always be hacked off at you for destroying them but if you can get a large number of big corps and alliances to recognice you are just mercs it might be doable.
It will be tricky setting this up in a way you can actually make a profit from it though.

In any alliance people will not accept mercaneries because of an old grudge, it's your job as mercenary to maintain professionalism at all times and have a team that can maintain such an attitude.
Thing with mercenary corporations is: - Its hard to get an appointment. - If you lose a battleship, noone who gave you the assignment will say: Hey you screwed up, here's a 60mil bonus to repay it. - If you shot one alliance up, its likely you wont get a new contract.
