Hi @ll,
first please dont use this for the regular friday flame about Linux vs. MS
What about having EVE running under Linux?
What I found out was it did in early Beta as it was running with DX8.
But now with DX9b it does not, checked it on the Transgaming Website.
Maybe CCP could work together with Transgaming or move back to DX8.
Why I would really like this?
Because I am trying to get rid-off any MS Product, and EVE is the last Point I need MS for so maybe many others are thinking the same?
Please Post here, maybe we will get a Linux/modified Client.
Would be damn cool

you can go and pay for that wineX i thnk or whatever andn they keep there emu up todate and i think they got dx9... not sure but ppl said it works nice but you have to pay for that software.. which is like worse then MS since linux is mostly about being free... and you having to pay for 1 peace of software just to use most of M$ stuff is dumb...
that was like a year or 2 ago, and i have no idea how that project is going... btw i think it was either a yearly fee or monthly fee for that software, i know its not a 1 time fee thats for sure...
thats why i said it was lame support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

Edited by: Jolo on 12/12/2003 21:20:58 I used to run linux and freebsd as my desktop. Then reaslized how stupid it was. So much configuring and upgrading. Windows never crashes on me and I never get viruses because I always patch. People who use windows and get viruses all teh time and have buggy drivers just don't know what they are doing. But saying linux is a better set up because of such and such is dumb. windows is awsome, don't see what you'd want to switch to linux.
Don't get me wrong either, I love unix. My server runs openbsd. I'm just not gullible enough to use linux sa my desktop anymore

I think the point was NOT to turn this into a Linux vs. MS debate
In response to what Al was saying, I don't think there is a chance Eve would go back to dx8 and I don't think any sane person should want it to. That would be like stepping back in time in terms of graphics and rewriting more of the code the hard way.
So it looks like at the current moment you either need to get an emulator or just set your PC up for dual boot Linux and windows. Most Linux people I know just do that as they use Linux for most things but can just kick it into windows when they need to.

I beleive too many of the nice looking graphical parts of Eve are due to those things added in dx9 that dx8 doesn't have. That said, I doubt CCP will give in and lower thier graphics for people to play using a different OS.
Either sit down and deal w/ 1 MS product left on your PC or quit Eve until someone comes up w/ a winex-like program that supports dx9.

I'd be surprised if WineX has DirectX 9.0b compatiple API's running, but I haven't tested yet, so If anyone is successful at running EVE (or any other DX9-dependant game) on the latest WineX, I'd sure be interested in reading about it.
Bur I do think CCP is better off focusing on working on EVE for Windows than diverting time and effort to tinkering with converting DX dll's for the benefit of WineX. (In fact, I'd guess that might even be a violation of the license for the DX9 dev tools)

Thanxs Riffix,
yes i dont want to have this anonther MS - Linux Flame!
Okay MS can run stabel, saw it but it was only installed the needed prog installed and never touched.
I am for myself are an professional unix guy who likes to play games. Most of the games I like are running under Linux. Yes i have multiple Boxes here and I could use dual boot, but i want a nice System only with one OS and I dont want another comp, since i have 4 here atm 1xWintel and 3x Unix Stations (which run damn smooth).
What I was trying to do was asking the playerbase if they also like to have EVE running under Linux. Thats why I also pointed to Transgaming, since they make do much for the community. Also CCP would not have to do the work, since Transgaming can do it and they have good knowledge about it.
Also why is no one using Open/GL anymore??? I think its better than DX, and the porting would be damn easy.
-snap- BTW: Transgaming charges monthly and then you can vote which game they should do next, if you dont get the abo you only can use the software free
thanxs

yeah, few companies have the man power/cash to make things run under linux. same reason some games don't go to mac's. No one buys them.
As eve gets more complex and WineX falls farther behind, you will have less and less a chance of eve running on linux. I remember when i started using wine many many years ago. I used to it play freecell on linux. hehe. ---------------------------------------

Agreed.
EVE is the only reason I even have Windows on this machine. Otherwise I use Linux on all other computers in my home.

EVE is the only GAME that keeps me on Windows XP as my Game machine.
However :
Adobe Software ( I have the whole suite legit liscense ) for Windows is the reason my Main Computer ( out of 12 or so ) has XP on it so I use it for Gaming.
If I could get away from MS I would but I would also be putting myself into the "soon to be upgraded" bin as the market moves to Windows and not Linux. So having both isn't bad especially if your in the IT field like I am. Also Java Development is awesome on XP and ports directly over to Linux.
Proud user, Windows XP OpenBSD FreeBSD BSD/OS Linux ( Red hat and Slackware )

BTW
I think the biggest reason why Transgaming doesn't work is the fact that the DirectSound for EVE are 9.0 not Direct3d.
What are the biggest driver conflics in EVE ? Sound thats right. Probably the reason they switched to DX9 in the first place.
