Actually, something that needs seriously addressing is IGB lag.
I casually clicked on a killboard link posted by a corpmate the other day. And if the site is too complex, the IGB simply locks up the client. Again a threading issue I suspect; but I had to close the client entirely before I could get back in.
Imagine the number of petitions if I posted a character/item link in Jita that intentionally went to a client-lagging IGB site. Or better yet, doing it in a fleet battle.

If this turns out true then it'd be most ironic, considering the whole fleet/reworked gang system was introduced as attempt to reduce the battle lag :/

Many things are kept on the client side and it should not. When I switch computers I lose: - bookmark folders, - overview settings groups, - drone groups, - ship modules layouts, - modules options (autorepeat, autoreload). It should be kept on server side. It's online game FFS I may have to go to InetCaffe to play it.
Just bring your settings folders with you when you travel and your charactors and setups and bookmarks and whatever will always be there no matter where you play. |

Very true: on the client side EVE has some very serious threading issues.
Nothing in the EVE client should be able to lock up everything else while waiting to finish.

And from various dev posts I gather that the same problem exists for the server code ("Jita is lagging because systems have to be on one CPU" etc.).

This is different issue, though; the 'lag' discussed in this thread is game client stopping to respond and essentially freezing while it waits for some piece of data to be sent to it... even though this piece of data is by no means crucial, and there's important thing happening around that it should keep track of meantime. Like, when you open market window and the whole client just sits there while it receives and draws available commodities... but if it was written proper you should still have full control over modules of your ship etc in the meantime, because market data has nothing to do with that o.O

there are people who do this (i have seen it intentional and unintentional)...
