A new skill called "Deep Space Navigation"
Each lvl allows you to warp off say 1au for any object (ie. planets, stargates etc)
This would be great for setting up probes. Tieing it to a object will stop ppl trying to warp of the map. You can use the story along the lines of, The navigation system needs to keep a object in range to keeps it's bearings in deep space.

I have always thought that the warpdrive needed a little bit more "manual" control, so

(TBH I would just prefer to be able to say to hit a button that says "Warp XX au in whatever direction you're facing" )

Yeah well it is a space games we should be able to "boldly go where no man has before" but i know this isn't possible.
Another option i give us a 8au probe along the lines of a quest for bad planet layouts

...And this is how we'd go back to "super safe spots". 10001 such jumps would get you safe spotted where no one else can find you :) Yup, loooooove the idea. Stories. |

Warp drive lacks manual control, that's right.
But don't go too far out of the system, who knows what's out there?
"In space, no one will hear you"...
There are also limits to what the ship's sensors can detect (for example, you can't get 1000 AU from the sun, you would be lost). -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast ! Flying Vexor and Ishkur, Myrmidon was too slow, got ganked by 3 BC and a Megathron...

Excellent idea, but you might need to go 2 au per lvl to be able to get the perfect setups, and 10 au from an object is still not far. So I'm signing for all us explorers :)

yeah i wasn't getting greedy for the best chance of having this done.
5au is far enough to get away for your last probe

It's a pretty good idea. I'd prefer to see something like the homeworld map, where you culd warp any place you wanted to in the 3D space.
Deep space SSs aren't that big a deal since someone can fit a cloak and hide anyplace till DT anyway.
But yes, for exploration, setting up probes for inner planets can be a pain. Sadly, the best ship for setting up exploration book marks is a freighter ...

This would be useful for all sorts of things. I like the way it is limited by how far up you can train the skill (5au max for lvl 5)

10AU out from the object furthest from the centre of the system? not far really...

I disagree. One of the great things about exploring is the fact that there is no easy way to cover every planet in a lot of systems. Makes you work harder for your potential rewards, and I think it should stay like that.
