Edited by: Obidios on 12/02/2007 02:21:33 Bit of a is 2 better than one theme, I'm looking at getting a new PC to replce my old 3.4ghz intel box.
In terms of processors I was looking at he dual core intel or amd's for around ú400, was also looking at getting a server board and dual xeon single core cpu's... Is 2 better than one with this or basically the same/worse?
Also in grafics cards, what happened to SLI? all the more expensive cards seem to single ones, is a nvidia 8800 better than a sli now days?
Other than that will be banging about a tb of hdd in there (I assume sata are still good enough??) and 2-3 gig of ram in a thermal take mozart case with a mini atx board in there too to run linux.
Looking at spending about ú1-1.5K all-in-all just need some hardware advise as it been a while since I built one!
Cheers

Your 3.4GHZ Intel computer is old ?!??! Well then again, you have a decent budget, so I'll help out if you really don't have anything else to spend it on (like a car).
Server boards and setups are more for server applications and less for gaming. Games today don't efficiently use extra cores or processors. If you run video processing, CAD, or server applications, then a server setup will be what you want. But odds are good you aren't, or you wouldn't have to ask. Stick with a single Core 2 Duo. No buts, they're the best.
I'd rather spend that money not on one 8800GTX, but two 8800GTXs. Of course you need a huuuge monitor (24-30 inches) or the graphic-inefficient game (Oblivion comes to mind) to take advantage of such hardware today. A 8800GTX-SLI setup will serve your needs for the next 4-6 years. If not, at minimum stick with one 8800GTX.
It all depends what you use your computer for.

2x8800 is absolute overkill and will cost almost all of the money listed in the OP's post anyways.
I'd say a Core Duo 2.13 or 2.4, 2GB of RAM, 2x 250 or 300GB SATA hard disks in RAID, and a single 8800 GT or GTX.

Thanks.. Use the comp for pretty much everything you can do, am going to hook it up to a 37" tv for movies and possibly games...The 3.4 I bought over 2 years ago so it is pretty old in hardware terms even if it chugs along ok, maybe just replacing the 256mnb pci-e card might do (it was one of the first pci-e out and I think its pretty crap now days) Just bought a Audi A3 so don't need a car just yet :) -----------------

Depends on the resolution the TV uses.
Even if its HD, standard HD is 720p, which is actually below my monitor resolution at the moment.
