My corporation like to give awards (represented with ribbons, see the impressive rack in my signature ) for special achievements in game. We recently found out, that we don't have anything yet to reward pilots to clear the systems and asteroid belts from NPC rats. Their success is represented in their displayed Security Status. Simultaniously, a high security status demonstrates the pacificist stance of a pilot, what we would like to recognize.
My question is now, what Security Status is achievable? Can you actually get 10.0? Are there many people with more then, lets say, 6.0? What is you personal security status right now, what was the highest you have ever had or ever seen on another pilot?

I have seen a pilot with 8.6 sec status.
Have no fracking clue how he got there.
Lots of people have slightly above 5. I suspect they get it by humping special spawns in missions.

you can achieve 5.0 by continually ratting the one type of rat, you can only achieve higher by ratting different npc rats, 10.0 can be achieved but ot would be an achievemnet and a half. I do like the idea of the ribbons and other types of rewards like medals or badges etc able to be seen on char portrait

you can'nt get past 5.0 in theory, I got past it because of game bugs and I suspect everyone else did too. These bugs are now fixed and no rat should hand out security above 5.0 although its possible one or 2 are still out there I guess. Join The Fight With Promo Today |

Yes, I remember to have seen someone with 8.5 not too long ago...

Umm, you raise you sec by killing thousands and thousands of enemy crew/pilots in cold blood for money.

Those enemy crews/pilots are attacking everything on sight. They do not react at all on any inquiring or questioning, we simply gave that up. We are protecting our own crews and pilots (especially our miners and haulers), and those of other ships passing through that areas, by eradicating that ruthless vermin, which obviously has unlimited resources of material and crew. That they sometimes have some valuable loot we can recover is just a nice advantage, and the official authorities have set a bounty on nearly all of them, which we naturally collect. These profits just cover the losses we suffer from time to time, when those soulless vermins get unexpected support from less robotic pirats.
Maybe the wording was not correct, I should have better said non-aggressive stance instead of pacifistic.
Those who do not attack us, will not be attacked by us.

Maybe at this time of the day there are some more pilots online, who could enlighten me about the mechanics and limits of Security Status?

you kill ncps - it goes up you kill players - it goes down
its a reversed percentage increase so the higher you get the longer it takes

If I recall correctly, in the pre-Exodus days, it was possible to go above 5.0, but that now seems to have been curtailed for some reason.

Edited by: Essque on 12/02/2007 14:21:30 It used to be possible to have +10.0 security status, but nowadays one can be only as high as +5.0. The guys with higher sec status you still see flying around have got their sec status pre-Exodus and did nothing to lose it.
Now it is possible to get a bit higher that +5.0 due to small bugs, like the one when you log and have your sec status set at 0.0 for some reason or another. As this is usually fixed if you relog, if you don't and run a level 4 mission or hunt big rats in a belt you will increase your sec status above the max.
Another possibility ( unconfirmed ) is that when you kill officers or named rats you get a sec status increase even if you're at +5.0 or above. Don't quote me on the last one though.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Essque, that was the most substantial answer to my question so far, it actually helps.
One more question though: Is it difficult to get a 5.0 Security Status, like you need to invest 2 or 3, or even more months of dedicated work to it, or can you get it en passant in about a month or so of occasional belt ratting?

If you're interested to raise your sec status as fast as possible, there is a skill you can train: Fast Talk. Other than that, kill NPC Battleships - one every 15 ( I think it was ) minutes.
I can't log now to check this, but if memory serves, if you have fast talk to level 3 or so you will get 0.1 sec status increase for the biggest BS you've killed in the last 15 minutes. So if you have access to 0.0 you could theoretically increase your sec status with 0.4 every hour until you hit +5.0. You have to kill 1 mill+ BSes to get that though. Lower bounty BSes will give you less sec status increase.
Figures above might be slightly off, but that's the general idea.

there was a story that if you kill pilots with -5 - 10 should I say - you get bigger bonus.. so you can go past 5.0 easy enuff.
