I was wondering if the capability exists for players to create their own skins in some sort of "paint shop" in station and pay for their own designs with isk/AUR? Would this be possible or would it create too many database issues or cause issues rendering in space? Other reasons?
I know myself and others I have talked to are tired of the same old skins for ships as well as their outrageous prices. I would GLADLY shell out that much for something I created myself and gave my ship a sense of individuality. I think CCP is missing a huge market here. I mean, you could make them individual to each ship, so when it is blown up, you have to recreate/repaint your new ship (for the same fee being that loss in eve is permanent).
Can you imagine the fun people could have with roams in i ships painted to a theme? I mean, ive been on police roams in the Navy Comet (because who roams in a Kronos) but this would take it to a whole new level! I would like to see what everyone else thinks and If this is even possible from CCP.
Seriously, this is the best idea ever. EVER. |

This would open up a can of worms because we all know how mature our players are and wouldn't create skins that were totally offensive to someone, somewhere or wouldn't fit into the lore of Eve Online.
The possibility of lawsuits would be intriguing though.

I dont mean importing custom graphics or anything, but a simple set of symbos, colors and patterns. Not too dissimilar ton the alliance logo designer. |

Ccp was working on a tool that let us do just that.
They then used the first wave of ship skins as a test for it and they sold well.
Then some one in marketing said"wait why let them make their own skins when we could just sell them ones we make"
So yeah don't hold your breath

So yeah don't hold your breath More the point they need to QA all the skins before they go in game which was why they had to stop the existing skins applying to any ship, which is by far the better way to go forward. The only way a player skin should be allowed should be under similar rules to an alliance logo, where alliances have to be a certain size, and pay for it with plex/etc. And it shouldn't be allowed to impinge on an NPC skin or existing skin too much.
Of course there should also be massively more LP skins in game. Rather than just Aur skins. |

well there is that, there is also the fact ccp says when a ship has a skin applied it becomes a whole different ship which is another string of data to make that ship.
while most of that data program is the same, the skin is what makes it different so a ship that has 10 skins would have 11 copies of data (1 base + 1 for each skin) this would be composed of many many many more for every ship per corp/alliance resuting in well over thousands of copies for each ship the logo could be applied to

When a ship is simply unpackaged, it's a whole different string of data to make that entity. Switching a skin means changing data in that already-existing string (it's not like you can skin a packaged ship, after all). |

If everyone is supposed to see your "neat creation", then the data has to be pushed to every single client of the game every time someone create a new skin. Can you imagine the amount of data involved? |

This is not good reasoning, this is just giving in to political correctness, the idea that exchanging ideas should be censored. Because some cry baby finds a paint job offensive it should not be allowed? And what kind of spaceship paint jobs don't fit into the lore of EVE? We already have ships painted every bright colour under the sun. Custom skins could never be a problem from this point of view because if CCP truly found a custom skin that was SO offensive that they just HAD to remove it, they could easily do so, the same way they remove offensive bios or offensive players. But this wouldn't happen because CCP could make it so that players would select from preset symbols and colours, and adjust them based on their preferences, it wouldn't be, "upload picture of offensive midget porn, receive lawsuit", no, that would be completely stupid.
The only logical reason not to put this idea in the game is because it is just not important enough right now for the amount of work that it would take. But there is no question it's viable.
Don't like my post.
