"a noob": someone who creates a thread on the general forum entitled: "a noob: defined and discussed" or similar.

in my opinion a noob is someone who thinks he is all 1337 when he isnt and because of that doesnt adapt/learn the game/stuff like that. ie. someone sitting in local telling me how to play this game, then dying under 30 seconds would be labeled a "noob"

From what I can gather there are plenty of n00bs in battleships.

It is, but a n00b can also be someone who gains power without knowledge which is easy to do in this game. [quite an apt decription if I say so myself]

Newbie = a legit new player to game...
n00b = a seasoned player that believes he/she is king sh|t yet makes Newbie mistakes or actions; usually a product of not being able to learn/adapt appropriately...

que? care to explain?
On the topic I agree n00b = someone who talks big then does some basic mistake that even a newbie wouldn't do.
Newbie = An honest new player trying to learn the ropes.

re-newbie; one with all the experience, but no skills at all (a.k.a an alt char).

We could just seperate "newbie" from an insulting term... I can't help wondering if new people to EVE see all the use of "n00b" on the forums and think "Hey, what'd I do?".
Lets stick with "moron", "idiot", "muppet" and "retard who should be killed very slowly with sharp things"

We general call our new players newbies untill they are expierienced enough to handle things in the game by themselfs without needing backup on such things like mining, npc hunting (to a point), trading, skill training directions, game mechanics, corp mechanics, and downright money making techniques.
Usually though we dont call them newb, newbie, tnederfoot, or whatever to thier face. Yes they are new, but they are a team mate non the less and will be treated with just as much respect as a seasoned vet is treated. This encourages them to grow on the right path and to treat others with the same respect.
