My alt just joined a mining fleet and was trying to dock when this popped up:
Hold up, haven't finished talking with the fleet yet. Never thought smacktalk would hold me up for 7 seconds.
Also, when I accidentally tried to transfer a null quantity in PI:
Please select one or more commodities to transfer. Driving empty trucks around does nobody any good.

I love coders with a sense of humor. Too bad it's not incredibly common and when they do get to do fun stuff, management usually quashes it.

If you have a look at some code, especially the comments and variable names, you'll learn that it's actually fairly common among coders. Almost as common as anger and cynicism. But you are right on the management part. Can't have snarky remarks in the error messages for a "serious" piece of software, apparently. |

Well, like a friend of mine always said, "Comedy is the best bad news."
If you're going to tell someone that this one instance they can't do something they normally should be able to do, you may as well throw them some humor to cheer them up about it. OS's and other software have way too much bland "Error some number: blah blah, technical bull nobody cares for reason this broke, click okay to terminate the program" type messages anyways. A good comical way of saying that stuff happened can make an "Ah, crap," moment turn into a really good laugh sometimes, so good on CCP for making an effort to giving us the bad news when they can in a lighthearted way.
"Tomahawks?"
"----in' A, right?"
"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."
"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

Well, our coders here are pretty serious about their code and keeping the 'humor' out of it. We've had a couple of jokesters, but like we both know, management tends to sit on their code pretty hard. I guess they are pretty normal for sense's of humor outside of coding though, they do prank each other regularly.
Eh, maybe in an accepting environment their humor would show more so, perhaps it's all about where you work that drives the humor...

Ugh, pretty much this. Whenever you want to inject some comedic flavor into error messages, management immediately shoots it down.
At my last job, I had an error message that displayed "****'s broken, yo" that I used for debugging. It almost made it into production before QA found out... |

Companies have definitely tried to make error messages more user-friendly in the last 20 years. "Bleep bloop illegal operation" has evolved into "An error has occurred. Sorry!" Even the infamous Windows "blue screen of death" has become a soothing teal.
CCP letting their programmers joke around with error messages in EVE is several steps in the right direction, for sure. |
