Thorax/vexor and assault frigs.
I am right, I am Kublai, respect my word or regret it.
Someone else will haveto help you with the setup, I already adopted a newbie this week so quite frankly i'm too lazy to give more detail
Don't even consider taking a drake into low sec though, I know people who live on drake-n00bs alone.

Edited by: Samirol on 14/02/2007 18:03:30 thorax and vexor are good ships to start out with. I dont suggest assault frigs because i kill them all the time and they drop good loot they are awesome pvp ships and you should pack as much t2 stuff into your cargohold!

I am a carebear on my alt. This is my Pvp/war dec character. Unfourtunetly he's a noob compared to my alt, nevertheless it proves how you can be successful in ganking entire corps with little sp.
Vexor ftw.

Advice?
Start witha cheap ship, frig or cruiser whatever you can afford.
LOOK AT THE SHIP SETUP STICKY IN THE SHIPS AND MODS FORUM FOR SETUP ADVICE
Work out if you can tank sentries long enough to kill people. If not restrict yourself to belt hunting.
Then read teh scanner guides scattered about, then go and have some fun. Resign yourself to losing a fair few ships as long as you analyse why you lost the fight each time.
Dont smack.

Thorax/vexor are great but AF'S ... he is a new player and those ships are expensive to lose, best training into BC's because anyone with a brain flying a cruiser or BC will murder an AF imo. AF's are tough little beasts but they will die to nos and webbing always. |

I disagree.
A cheap fitted drake is totally cost-effective at gatecamps. This guy wants to kill something, gate camping is much easier as beltpiracy, as you don't spend hours searching for targets, and your enemys are not well experienced belthunters, that just want to shoot something.
Who other than a total nublet or a guy who knows exactly what to do jumps to any belt nowadays anyway? -
I got a portrait now, wheeeee! \o/

I also disagree, but not with kublai. Both those types of players are fun to fight for different reasons. The newbies for the easy and sometimes expensive explosions (2x Expanded Cargohold IIs recovered today!) Gatecamps are 10x more boring than waiting for someone to enter a belt and are no fun at all. You get just as good, if not better loot from belters and if you know how to use scanner (its not hard) you'll know where they are 15-30 secs after they've arrived in a belt. Gates are F1-F8 and you don't learn crap about PVP, belts take a much deeper knowledge of the game and can be much more fun and challenging. Fighting at gates is fun, camping em defiantly not.
Start off with easily replacable ships and you'll be fine. First thing is to learn to use the scanner and safespots. Don't engage unless the matchup is favorable or you don't mind losing your ship in a learning experience. Don't try to PvP with any Caldari ship in a class lower than a battlecruiser (snake implanted Crow is the exception).
Better yet, fly Gallente or Minmatar. The Arbitrator and Maller are awesome too if set up correctly. Basically anything but Caldari, use those ships to make your PvPing ISK.
IMO the best ship for belt piracy right now is the Myrmidon. Has best of everything, as much NOS suckage as an Amarr recon with Recon 4, cap injected, MWD and a web. You can scram and still have a slot left for ECM or sensor boosting. Dual rep tank is icing on the cake. I'd recommend 4x T2 Heavies and 5x Warrior IIs so you can chase off the pesky inties and also deal near BS class damage. Use T2 everywhere possible.
Only T1 ship in your class or lower to avoid is the Drake, and only because you'll never break its tank if it's set up properly. Takes a gank megathron to do it, if that. (personal Tranq experience talking here, not theoretical setups. NERF RIGS! JK ;-)
Anyways, my 2 ISK

my first suggestion is get the heck out of highsec... lowsec is as dangerous as you make it. I left highsec about 2 months into my characters life and never looked back. well except to pick up afew items from trade hubs you will get ganked from time to time, but you will also win from time to time. join a corp of like minded people make sure they can defend themselves... i made that mistake with the first corp i joined... omg we are at war... guys, hello? crap.... ditched that corp with a vengance after that

drake kinda sucks for solo pvp because of it's lack of tackling mid slots. most of the mids u'll want to use for tanking. you can make a very impressive tank on it so for gate killing it it very effective for it's price and i'm afraid this is where u will find most of ur targets these days.
imo u can't effectively solo with a shield tank so maybe bear that in mind when u choose ur ship type.

My buddy was in a Drake, looking for fun. Encountered a pirate Raven in a low-sec system. The pirate engaged eventhough he would have to tank gate guns too. My buddy survived to get good faction/t2 loot, thx to Damage Control(he was in structure when the Raven popped)
So dont write the Drake completely off, it got some nice shield resistances imo.

I could use an apprentice/wingman. Contact me in game if you want to learn some in depth small gang pvp stuff.
As for a good early pvp ship, vexor and arbitrator are my favorites, but the celestis is evil too if properly fitted. The key is T2 drones. Get those, and train up your drone interfacing to 3 or 4. Then fly one of the above mentoined ships, and you'll soon be burning targets that thought they had a chance.
Oh, and listen to corwain. He and I terrorize lowsec with t1 cruisers on a regular basis.
