more correctly its a term used to describe the sort of individual who always wants things his/her way with no risk to them whatsoever _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. "Can I be a consultant for EVE II?" - WhiteDwarf |

A carebear is a person who doesnt care about the game or other players, just about himself and his playing style.
The carebear will whine when the devs fix an unbalanced issue of the game (ie. empire space bs mining). The carebear will rant on the forums all day even though he knows its a good change for the game but alas, it will cut his profit.
The carebear doesnt think this is a game, the carebear thinks its a matter of life and death, and he MUST win no matter what. But the carebear, unlike normal people, prefers to try and shape the game to make it easier for himself rather than adapting to the new enviroments.
Finally the carebear never accepts defeat, and will always find an excuse to why he was bested. This will usually include exploits, bug abuse, *****1ng and various other "default crimes" of the carebears handbook. If non of the above can be provided, the carebear will mark any tactic used by his/her opposition as "lame" (gate camping is LAME!), "cheap" (you shot me from outside sentry range! CHEAP!) or "un-honorable" (you killed me, thats UN-HONORABLE).
kthx. -

Don't knock pirate hunters man, it's the hardest job in this game. Most of the best pilots learnt their trade that way (the rest the other!). |

Edited by: Sphalerite on 15/12/2003 10:26:46 A carebear is someone who wants the game mechanics to defend them and their playstyle from all threats and let them meet whatever win condition they've set for themself.
In EVE, the archecypal carebear is a indy pilot/miner who wants to be free to travel to whatever location they see fit, regardless of NPC or PC actions.
Some people have taken this to mean that all indy/miners are carebears. This isn't true... there are carebears across all professions in EVE. The battle cry of the carebear is NERF! They are unwilling or unable to accept any change to their environment that comes without their personal approval. Devs be damned, a carebear knows whats best for everyone, and especially themself.
The retort often used when called a carebear is griefer. A griefer is a player who's only goal is to cause the suffering of others. While griefers are easy to spot in PvE games, griefers are harder to spot in a PvP game like EVE. Grief play in EVE is generally defined as tactics who's main goals are not gain for one's self, but harm to another.
All pirates will look like griefers if you come at if from a PvE background but it is the mechanics of EVE that force pirates to kill under most circumstances to collect any booty.
An early pirate rampage of newbie killing is what lead many player to lable all pirates, or even all combat players as griefers.
Most true griefers in EVE can be found around newbie corps and systems. People usually learn quickly to spot liers and sneaks.

As we can see, there is a lot of varriation in what people think "carebare" means. Everyone has the same general idea but there is no precise definition. Yet it is the most commonly used phrase in EVE probably...
It has lost it's meaning.

Carebear has nothing to do with pirates or pirate hunters. Its a player attitude, not a profession. A pirate can be a carebear too, same as everyone else in the game. -

Thats pretty much what it is new, same with calling someone a newbie (which has morphed to newb, then n00b and now "nub" or "nubs" which I may add is completely stupid as it is pronounced completely different.......idiots).
Taken from the May 29th 2003 Devchat at EveGate . <Muaddid> Q: When will sentry gun and station and similar construction pods be introduced on the market? <Hellmar> we have various player owned entities already implemented. Sentry guns, power/shield generators, field repair mini-stations, mobile refineries. We are still working out the last tidbits of how they can be over taken, what is the penalty of having a sentry gun kill a n00b etc. and we have been a bit busy with plugging the holes that people have found.I would say that you'd start to see these items on the market in about 2-3 weeks, very expensive to begin with |

A carebear is a person who cares about a balanced gameplay where people are given a chance to prosper, the cool thing is to not care and work that angle you have to the bone and scam some on the side.
