So I started out as a pure mining/industry type to give the "laid back" life a shot. Started out with a lot of Ind and Mining skills already pretty high and took the advice of many to skill up to an Osprey and mine until I can get into a retriever.
Well I recently got the retriever and so far I have been less than impressed; I dont have the skills to equipe any mining upgrades so all I have on it is two Strip Miners.
What I have noticed is it seems to take a lot longer than the osprey to get anything done. The Strip Miners seem to take a week of Sundays to empty anything into the cargo hold and usually by the time they do I see the "Strip Miner deactivates because the asteriod is empty" message.
Am I missing something here? Did I just get into one too soon?
I am in Empire space, its .7 and not very crowded at all but its pretty rare to find any Massive Scordite that is not almost empty and Scord gives me the best bang for the buck when it comes to refining.
Plus I miss not having my tractor beam, it moves at a snails pace so the only redeeming factor so far seems to be the increased capacity.

retreiver can FAR outmine an osprey per minute. yes the strips takes a while to empty into cargo but they also mine vast ammouts of ore. which is also why asteroids become empty much sooner. try fitting an asteroid scanner to see volumes before starting and mine accordingly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Please check my in game BIO for current in game BPO auctions. |

If you have Caldari Cruiser L5, the Osprey will outmine a Retriever. The benefit with the Retriever is the strip miners. Th 3 minute cycle is nice to have.

Focus fire on different asteroids.
Point each laser to a different roid, that way when it only has a couple units left, only one of the two lasers will do a 3 minute cycle delivering those last 200 units, the other should pull in its regular amount.
Same for higher level barges.

I was mining with a BC, 5 t2 lasers and 5 t2 mining drones. Problem was I was always trying to empty the cargo bay into a jet can. Now that I got a mining barge I can sit back and do other things while mining.

That's funny, because my mining barge can't even hold a second cycle.
Off the top of my head, I have 2000m¦ cargo space and it fills 1048 per laser per cycle, meaning I have to mine with my lasers timed, meaning I have to drag to a jetcan every 1.5 minutes :/

If you want to help your mining by using strips, then maybe think about fitting a survey scanner. That will stop your "Asteroid has been ravaged" message.
Also, if your mining yield gets above 1000m3, make sure you stagger your lasers by about 20-30 seconds so you can empty your hold before it fills completely. ---

Or, if ya can't fit a MLU, fit a Cargo Expander.

Cargo Expanders are your friend. They are very cheap now too, can make the money back in no time. Plus, if you're really serious about mining you can get to a better barge than a Retriever... retrievers make so little money per hour in high sec you may as well just run 2 level 3 missions and you'll make more money.

I apologize to the OP for having to respond to this claim.
Tunajuice, take that claim to my thread and we'll sort it out. Any and all issues that come up are addressed, and fixed. I have only one issue pending, tmk, and it only affects certain computers. So please, if your going to call it buggy, please let me know what you're referring to, but in my thread, not here. Miner Timer |

Thanks for the tips guys, I will keep them in mind.

I am curious about this suggestion: I checked Evemon and even with the suggested learning skills I am looking at 50 days to get into a covetor.
Plus there is the hefty (for a begginer) price tag to consider. So there is a lot to think about here, I thought the retriever WAS the decent begginer barge, advice I got early on was to just skip the procurer.
RE: running missions, been there and done that. This is an alt, I have all the missions I can stand on my main so I wanted to see if its possible to go through life w/out resorting to missions. Besides this guy has practically zero combat skills :)

Halada's Guide will help you in this and many areas. In particular, read section 4 regarding Barges.

Lets say you have 2 strips doing 850 per cycle. If you are mining veldspar, then you will get (850 * 2) * 10 (veldspar takes up .1 m^3), then you will get 17000 units per cycle. Just use a survey scanner and leave asteroids below that amount alone.
