Seeing how the search function only yielded two totally unrelated topics, I was wondering if anyone ever tried the TrackIR functionality of EVE yet. Even if you're a dev I'd love to know if this little device would be worth a purchase. It could be especially interesting for movie makers I guess, right? Does anyone have any first hand experience with it? It looks pretty awesome from their demo movies, but sadly there are no EVE demos. I'll probably be holding off on a purchase until I get a machine worth frapsing with, but I'd still love to hear any first-hand experience you might have.

This is not a flight simulator game and its pretty pointless to even ask. |

It's an available feature in the game that he has a legitimate question about... Why is it pointless to ask?

It looks pretty neat, might be real cool for movies. I think it would take time for me to get used to Combat with it.

neat technology
so this is what games will be like in 20 years, head tracking + wearable display.

Edited by: Strength Cow on 18/02/2007 06:54:20 From trackir website.
"Newest Additions:
Hot Games
# ArmA: Armed Assault # EVE Online # Flyboys # Flight Simulator X # GTR 2 # Lock On 1.2: Black Shark # netKar PRO # Orbiter # rFactor # Ship Simulator 2006 # Wings Over Europe"
Also from the site:
"1. How to Enable TrackIR When you start EVE, TrackIR will not turn blue. You must press "esc" to enter the game's settings menu, and click on the "graphics" tab. At the bottom middle of this tab, there is an section on Graphics where you can checkmark "Enable NaturalPoint TrackIR Head Tracking." Check this option, and return to the game. The TrackIR's blue light should now be on, and you have 6D0F control!"

The implementation isn't the greatest (it works the same as the hold right mouse + drag function) but perhaps something one could get used to. I just don't like it.
It's a must-have if you're a flight simmer though.

I got trackIR primarily for FSX but it was fun to see how it works in eve.
To be honest, it doesn't really work as well in EvE as it does in FSX.
Get it for FSX, drop it for EVE :)

Thanks for the responses so far.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering... the way I understand it, there is 6DOF with the EVE camera (left + right click combinations), but on the weird rotational axis system centered on your ship, if you know what I mean. I'm not a flight simmer by any means, so I'm grateful to those who share their experiences with the EVE implementation of this cute little thing.
Does anyone know if there are any EVE videos made with it, or even demos with real life footage combined with ingame footage like the demos on the TrackIR site? --- WTS: Forum Signatures, 30mil a piece. Evemail me!

Tried it out again tonight for a while. I think I could come to use it if the support were improved. The main problem is that the scaling isn't set up appropriately. The TIR only "sees" something like 40 degrees on either side of the unit. In a flightsim, the input is scaled so that when you reach the limit of the unit, you're looking completely to the rear. The scaling in EVE, though, is basically 1:1, IOW you can only really look to 40 or so degrees in each direction. So it can't be used to glance to the side, or behind you.

I'm a simmer, so I use the trackir with other things, but yeah the feature in EvE isn't really implemented that well. You can zoom in, pan left to right, up down etc. It's mostly made for a first person view in games though. I thought it might be good, so I could look around and check out my immediate space, but it's more of a hassle than anything with the weird camera view. But I think it'd be good for eve movies... more of a natural camera action.

Hmm, but can't you set sensitivities like that in the driver software? Else it would be kind of pointless I guess... --- WTS: Forum Signatures, 30mil a piece. Evemail me!

Seems like it'd be cheaper if it were implemented with accelerometers rather than IR LEDs.
You'd probably need 6 displays to take advantage of it on Eve, though.

I haven't found TrackIR useful for Eve. I won't take-off the ground in a flight sim without it loaded up, but it's going to be of limited function and value in any 3rd person game. ------------------------------------------ 'Teh Onchinator' Personal Assistant to MrsPitman |

Same here, can't play flight sims without it, can't play Eve with it. ------ [SILD] |

It's a bit of a resurrection, but would this have any impact on the "upcoming" atmospheric flight?
